    Hello Sanna! I love your videos! Just one quick observation or piece of advice: it is healthier for the rhubarb plant if you pull the stalks out from the base of the plant rather than cut them. The cut surface leaves an opening for diseases to potentially get into the core of the plant. It's easy to pull the stalks out from the base. Just grab the stalk close to the base and pull slightly outward and upward with some force. And to comment on another comment below - the leaves are poisonous but as long as you don't ingest them, you'll be fine. I know people who chew on raw rhubarb stalks plain or dipped in sugar as a treat but I have never tried it. It is very tart so I can't imagine it would be very tasty.

    Cheers from Southern Scandinavia! We love rhubarb too and have been expanding our rhubarb bed every year. We also made the majority of the harvest into juice and have been experimenting with making rhubarb wine.

    Sarna : Normally over here in Scotland we never cut the rhubarb with a knife but instead just pull it out stem by stem and then into the kitchen, where you spend hours cutting it up, before washing it thoroughly in cold water and placing it in the largest saucepan you have. Add Sugar or Honey so it looses it acidity. Bring to the boil, remove all the white topping as that is waste and keep it on a medium simmer for about 40 minutes depending on size of the pan, then switching the heat off, leave it to cool naturally. Then make into lots for a luscious sweet to be eaten with savouries of your type. Some make rhubabrd jam and others make paint stripper - minus the sugar. Some even make it into wine!!

    I live in Minnesota in the Midwest region of the US. Rhubarb thrives here and today I will make this juice with the plant in my yard. Typically we make jam and sweets such ad Rhubarb Cake, Rhubarb Crumble, Rhubarb Crisp, and my favorite, Rhubarb Cream Bars. I hope you enjoy today.

    OK, so I have one big Rhubarb plant in my garden and I am always scared to make anything of it and I will just leave it to die in the autumn. I am scared that we can get poisoned if I don't do it correctly. Not sure when to harvest it or how to prepare it, so I will just leave it. Never had a Rhubarb in the garden until this summer. 🤪🤪

    • @sannavaara
      @sannavaara  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I understand these things can be quite tricky sometimes ☺I've only heard that you shouldn't eat rhubarb raw. When you make juice or jam or pie, it's always cooked first. There are plenty of good recipes for instance how to make jam and they are very easy to follow. Just go for it, you'll be fine and in the worst-case scenario your rhubarb will end up in the trash instead of letting it die in the garden 😁

    • @ResonatingSweden
      @ResonatingSweden ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sannavaara haha, easy to say. I just read that the leaves are toxic to humans and if you eat a leave you can actually die and i have a little 3yo kid , so I am worried that she can get poisoned and that I wont cut the leaves properly or something... I might try it... will keep you posted 🤪🐍

      @@sannavaara Heh -) That's interesting. For some reason we (here in Russia) think that finns don't eat mushrooms )) While here it is a nationwide "hobby" so to say. I myself spend every 3 months (jul-oct) doing that. Forests are crowded with people during this time. We have a house near Vuoksi river, not too far from Finland border. I hope one day these lands will return to Finland, there's a lot of people who d like to live in your country rather than this one ;-/

    Girl use a larger kitchen knife to chop the rhubarb next time!
    You are exhausting yourself unnecessarily with that peeler knife.
