  • How to prep the flow frames to entice the bees to move up and start filling them with honey. The secret (so I've been told) is to pre-wax the frames.

      The girls can be finicky though. I have flow supers for three colonies this season and waxed all the frames as in this video. One of the colonies just ignored the flow frames completely. I pulled supers from above and below the flow super, but they remained empty. Gonna try a different colony next year.

    I did the same when I got the flow last year, many bees walks over it but would NOT deposit any nectar in it. As soon as I switch over to traditional waxed foundation frames, they starts to build combs and use it, somehow they just don't like flow..... This year, when my first honey super gets about half full, I put the flow box in between brood and the half full honey super, this way, the bees will have to walk through the flow box to reach honey, so slowly they accepted it and now it's finally near full (after 4 months).

      Bees can be finicky. Both hives the had flow frames on them took to the flow frames pretty well.

    Better to dip it fully to coat it with one layer

      The best thing to do is take a beginner beekeeping class.

      Thanks! As a follow up, the girls definitely went in to the flow frames and started filling them. I can't say for certain that pre-waxing them did the trick, but it certainly didn't hurt.

      I bought one pound and have most of it left. It really doesn't take much at all. It's a light coating of wax.

    How did this turn out? Did it work well?

    • @FreeRangeArtFarm

      It worked to get the girls up there and have them start working the frames. I had a bad nectar flow the first year, then last year my girls swarmed. So, I haven't ever had them fill all of the frames, but they certainly used them, and I was able to extract from a couple of frames.

    Did it end up helping to get the bees to the supers sooner?

    • @FreeRangeArtFarm
      @FreeRangeArtFarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't say for sure because I did this to both of my flow hives. I can say that the bees went in to the super and started building it out within a few days after putting the super on.

    Nice video… However, silica dust from the clay that is on all surfaces of your pottery room, is actually not good for anybody… It is actually really unhealthy what you are doing….

      Yes, silica dust is a dangerous aspect of pottery. We do clean all of the surfaces on a very regular basis and it's just a hobby. Our silica exposure is really very minimal. I also took precautions for the bees when I waxed the frames. If you noticed I placed clean sheets of packing paper on the surface of the table before I started working.
