Justin is learning that he does not have to block every punch with his face which is bad news for the division.

meanwhile i needa learn how to block my face with every punch.. i'm sorry, im an amateur and i'm just a fighter where im not willing to let anyone punch my face.. but i have to learn how to trade properly when theres a bigger gap even if it takes a punch to the face.

Same here, there was something really unsettling about seeing Tony get absolutely destroyed, maybe it's because were used to seeing him do that to other people so it's shocking to see the rolls reversed but it's also the way he reacted to those shots in the fourth and fifth round, it was like a dying animal not understanding what was happening to it but knowing it wasn't good. Best of luck to him though, i'm sure after a few months he'll be back.

They were too deep in prep for Khabib, so instead of doing a complete turnaround, they just kept it simple. Tony was landing volume on Justin early on, but nothing seemed to work as effectively as needed, and every shot Justin landed would've been enough to sleep any other lightweight. They just couldn't answer what Gaethje had to offer. In my opinion, this was a worse matchup for Tony in comparison to Khabib.

The fight DEFINITELY would have been different with a crowd. Fighters literally FEED off of the crowd. Especially Justin. Justin fought the most technical fight of his entire career because there wasn't a crowd there to make him want to go to war and just stand toe to toe not blocking any shots, without a crowd Justin was able to clear his mind completely. Tony also would have possibly gotten a 2nd wind with the crowd cheering him on. This fight surely would have been different, possibly the same victor but it wouldn't have looked the same.

Counting Justin out at this point is dumb as fuck. Many knowledgeable people were saying even before that Justin could be Khabib's biggest nightmare but, because of his fighting style, could ultimately become one of those cases of a guy who could beat the champ but not beat the top guys to get to that spot.
Justin could DEFINITELY beat Khabib. Especially now that he's actually being tactical about his striking.
He has the wrestling ability to keep the fight standing and he is superior when it comes to both striking technique and knockout power. There are no reasonable arguments that can sustain the notion that Khabib will undoubtedly beat him.

Also the lack of crowd allowed the fighters to hear there corners and even the announcers for advice. With the one fighter even crediting DC for the kick check advice which changed that fight.

He is a big part of Tony's down fall. The result of Tony Khabib would be similar I believe bc Bravo is just not good at this side of the game. I feel bc Justin was given this chance and took Tony's chance that he should have been given a chance to win it back and face Khabib.

And when the Nurmagomedov fight got cancelled and Gaethje got booked, both fighters had the same amount of time to make adjustments. The only argument that makes sense is that Tony had too long of a fight camp and 2 weight cuts, but if he felt out of sorts... you dont take the fight. In the end, no excuses, Gaethje's was just the dominant fight that night.

The whole excuse of "training for Khabib" is such bullshit.
Tony had a full camp and was in great shape. It was his arrogance to think he could stand up and strike with Justin. Tony never attempted a takedown.
Yeah opponents change. So you sit down with your team and you watch some film and you adjust your game plan. You're not learning how to fight in 3 months. Why didn't Tony shoot for a takedown or pin Justin to the cage and try to trip him? It's not because he was terrified that he wouldn't get the takedown, it was because he expected to do to Justin what he did to everyone else.
Tony had no respect for Justin's power and too much confidence in his own striking. A smarter gameplan would have been to get the fight to the ground and use his submissions. Instead, Tony tried to stand and bang with a knockout artist.

    • @benoneill5550
      @benoneill5550 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

It's not that Tony had no respect for Justin's power... Tony gets hit by everyone, in every fight. It was only a matter of time before he got knocked out, pretty much all his opponents have rocked or dropped him. Pettis, Kevin Lee, Vannata... the list goes on. Tony is a beast but it seems there is something wrong with his standup approach, he just gets hit way too much. His striking approach against Gaetche was exactly the same as his approach to every other opponent.
As per the grappling issue, he doesn't really take people down. I don't think he could straight take Gaetche down but I agree he should've at least tried, would've opened up the possibility for some sneaky submissions.

Joe, you forgot the most important reason Tony almost killed himself. Doing a double weight cut is insane and only a person like Tony will do such a thing. You can ask any fighter in wrestling, boxing and UFC and they will tell you they would never do such a thing. I will like to see a rematch with both fighters having a complete camp and preparation for each other.

Thats why I still believe Tony can beat Khabib even after being defeated by Justin. If Justing didnt put him in the ground then Khabib wont as well. Tony has more chance because his superior striking skills againts Khabib. However I think if Justing lets Khabib get a hold of him he is done.

That fight would have definitely been different with a crowd. Tony feeds off the audience. Also the double weight cut and Change of opponents, mixed with a fuckall corner and a well prepared Gaethje. There were many variables to his loss.

Double weight cut is debatable, everyone talks about how "inhuman" he is so it would stand to reason because he is so super, the weight cuts shouldn't be a problem; however, the truth is, cutting weight the way UFC fighters do always effects performance.

Your opinion and that is cool. What half the people think is, I'm trying to make "excuses" for his loss. All I am saying is these things together affected the fight, does not mean if some of them were corrected Tony would have won that night. For all we know Justin might have whooped him more. When someone like Tony loses the way he did, you always have to see the reasons for it.
It takes me back to Cain vs Werdum in Mexico. Maybe Werdum still might have beaten him if Cain would have been smart about his camp, but we know that something went terribly wrong because that is not the usual Cain. Just saying, Tony's loss might have more to do with, than just Gaethje being a superior fighter.

He WAS a wrestler as a kid, then when he found MMA he realized he has a good chin. And in the UFC, that chin has been his weapon. I did not like to watch Gaethje fighting in the UFC because of that, he was taking head shots and losing being a functional human in the future like dollar bills fly out of your hands at a strip club. But against Ferguson he looked leaner and like a smarter fighter. I hope he continues with that, I would love to see how New Gaethje will do. I do not want to see how old Gaethje will end up 10 or 20 years from now when all those head strikes creep up on him.
