There is a line but most of my advice to my friends is "suck it up and stop acting like a little bitch".If you don't like it be up front, not a passive aggressive little shit.
I really enjoyed this! But its really NYC Asians vs Cali Asians. The prevailing influence of the East Coast is inherited from the WASPy elitism of the private university system of the North East --set by the Ivy League Universities that catered to the scions of banking and industry from centuries back. NYC proper has most of the newer immigrants from Asia. The older generations of Asians...specifically the Cantonese Chinese whom have been here for many generations have been mainstreamed and you will not find them living in the city for the most part, they have moved on preferring the suburbs. Some of the younger ones will live in more gentrified neighborhoods in NYC, usually with non Asian spouses. I am an older mom (I have 2 teenage boys now whom are 4th generation East Coast Asians.) I walked into a cosmetic store in Manhattan Chinatown to make some purchases and the young Chinese girl who worked there kept looking at me in awe as we were talking. Finally she blurted out "You speak PERFECT English!" ...my eyes bugged out. I guess I am an oddity here.
+jrmint2 Lol you definitely are an oddity :D. As a 23 yr old asian american who spent his whole life in new york city/long island, It's RARE that I come across an asian older than 35 who speaks unaccented english and/or is very attuned with mainstream American culture. I've never been to california, but I've been told it's more common there, since the asian community is a lot stronger/actually exists there, and there's a longer history of asians settling in the west whereas it's a relatively newer thing in the east coast.
+CalK lol, thanks for the confirmation :D, In the LA area, I've been in some strange situations where I was at a non Asian establishment and the whole place is packed and I'm wondering where all the white people are!!
+jrmint2 +CalK, Actually, I'm rather surprised as I rarely socialize outside of Asian Americans whom do not speak perfect english, and some even barely speak their ancestral tongue...if any. My husband for example doesn't speak a lick. I can only order food. So this would also explain why when I walk into my son's school where 70% of the kids are Asian American, a lot of them stare. Hmmm.... a little deflating...lol.
+Technoman True outside of NYC and NJ there still exists a large Asian pop within the east. Beltway region ( DC, NVig, Maryland) also have very large Asian populations as well. To an extent Delaware Valley and Boston suburbs also have a good sized Asian population.
I feel like people on the east coast are a lot more bolder with what they wear, I feel like people on the west coast dress more with trends rather than individualisc
ikr 😂 it's somewhat true, people in the west coast still have high expectations from their parents and we know that the $$ is important to make. But were laid back and relaxed when we want to (I live in the west coast and I'm Asian so yeh ^-^)
bahah the racism comment reminded me of my internship in new York. At a function a man literally was confused as to why I was asian that spoke fluent English with an Australian accent. He was so mind blown it was hilarious. When I told him I was Australian he replied "but you're asian." bahaha
Michelle Tang hahaha! I get the same thing when people hear me speak Russian then Spanish and back to English. I get, "dude, I thought you were middle eastern or something".
I grew up in Maryland and there definitely a growing population of Asians in the Maryland, DC, Virginia region. I definitely agree that the racism towards Asians are more prevalent in the East Coast versus the west coast.
I grew up in both Cali and Texas, and I go to college on the east coast. Honestly, Cali is the best place for Asian-Americans to grow up. There they accept Asians as being American, not immigrants. Parts of Texas are pretty diverse too, like Houston (huge Indian/Asian population here). But the east coast is awful. I was shocked at how much racism I encountered there, not just casual or unintended racism, but purposefully offending racism, as if you are worth less because you are not white.
i think what area you were in makes a HUGE difference. I'm on the east coast (southwest MD) and my area has a huge asian population (20%+), and is very diverse in general so i've never felt discriminated against in that way. you're far more likely to find that kind of racism in rural parts of the southeast imo. once you get to the bigger cities from like DC to boston that becomes far rarer.
So True. On the East Coast, especially in Massachusetts, white people NOT only discriminate against Asians, but thety play favorites with certain types of Asians, , especially East Asians and they really are racist towards Yemenis and Palestinians.
the sound of driving everywhere and not having to take public transportation sounded great until I actually visited LA. It's so spread out it takes forever getting to different places. People there are really hot though
Moved from the San Francisco Bay to Queens and never wanted to come back. I was always lonely, shy, afraid of things growing up in Cali, but after living in New York, the cultural diversity and the increased proximity for human exchange changed me into who I am today. Focused, more willing to experience new things, more aware of so many cultures other than my own, finding my voice, and most of all, the many great friendships I've found with other people who aren't only asian. But I gotta say other than my family and the cali sunshine, I miss the asian food on the west the most.
I live in NYC, grew up in Virginia. I love the the blunt, honesty and hustle here in NYC, and liked the southern hospitality from where I grew up. We like to be creative too, we just like it with more attitude 😛
+Detective Ena thats right. Im from LA but LA people BS alot and half the time talk about things that they dont even know. Eastcoast = much more educated, sophisitcated and got more class!
+Detective Ena thats right. Im from LA but LA people BS alot and half the time talk about things that they dont even know. Eastcoast = much more educated, sophisitcated and got more class!
+KoreanClown Unless you put effort into your living I don't think so :) just find the right places where you think fits you best, especially the area's cost of living.
It’s older. Not anything that compares to like, Rome, but it’s not hard to find old communities. Also since it has been settled longer it is more culturally diverse than a lot of America. Not in terms of immigration, but in terms of regional culture specific to the state or region
The problems with the West Coast is that if discount places like California, and Big cities like Seattle, Las Vegas, Portland, Phoenix, etc, the West side is pretty much empty.
HersheyQueen thats just because we grew up on the east coast so were accustomed to our weather had you grown up on the west coast you probably would say that you cant stand the cold
Omg I had the same experience as the east coast girl. When I went to LA I heard elderly asians speaking in perfect english and I almost fainted. So cool. Seriously. I'm from Pennsylvania and the one time I did hear an elderly asian speaking perfect english out here was in Philly. And that was only once! Also, I would like to suggest that you get someone not from the tristate area because there are very different situations along the east coast as well as the west coast. Also, I hear those racist comments mentioned so much that I'm not even offended anymore. I just laugh along with everyone else. I know it's bad. But I can't get myself to care. Maybe you guys should also make a video on that!
+Karen Grace I had the same experience too. And everyone has super white names like Harris, Dwight, Jefferson, Glenn especially the japanese americans. Here in NYC we give our kids names like Haruka, Yuta, Yosuke, Kenta, Momo and somehow the teachers can pronounce them fine.
Honestly, I wish I lived in California. I lived in the east coast my entire in a city with only 2.4% Asians. (Bridgeport, CT), I was the only Asian guy in my Class for K-8th grade, and it was freakin annoying. I was that one guy people turn to (especially teachers) for Asian things specifically Chinese subjects, which got annoying quick, I'm Vietnamese, I know nothing about China. Made me want to hit them with a potato every time
this was a pretty interesting video, but coming from someone who grew up on the east coast for half of her life and then west coast for the other half, some of these stereotypes are just that: stereotypes. for example, i personally feel like i got more uptight after being on the west coast because within the bay area, the competition is crazy. there's rarely any room for relaxation when you're constantly getting pressured to "get ahead". also, because the east coast is so diverse in terms of differentiating state cultures, i feel like this isn't the most solid representation. but either way, like you guys said, we ourselves make the best of where we are in the end.
East Coast is very diverse compared to the West Coast. While the entire West Coast is mostly liberal, only the northeast is mostly liberal, with the more south you go, the more conservative/racist you get. For example, NYC, Boston, & Philadelphia are extremely different from Georgia, Virginia, & the Carolinas.
Well, for Virginia it varies. Northern VA (where I'm from) is mostly liberal. Central VA (went to college there) is a mixture of both. The rest of the state is mostly conservative. Maybe because VA is neither North nor South, but precisely smack dab in between.
Not exactly the case. I'm from the Deep South (a hour south of Atlanta), and the racism against East Asians are lower than what occurred in the Northeast and the West Coast. In the Deep South, East Asians are considered to be part of the other type of white (like Polish, Jews, and Lebanese) while in the West Coast, they are heavily discriminated against. Just because white Southerners doesn't like black people doesn't mean they dislike East Asians. It is quite the opposite. I think Northerners and West Coasters are more racist toward East Asians than Southerners. The Deep South doesn't have a list of historical anti-Asian discrimination that the West Coast had. The West Coast have Chinese Exclusion Act, anti-Asian legislation in the early 1900s, Japanese internment camps, and recently the emasculation of East Asian men in Hollywood. Source: "By the late 1960s, Chinese-American children attended White schools and universities. They joined Mississippi’s infamous White citizen’s councils, became members of White churches, were defined as White on driver’s licenses, and could marry White." essays.backintyme.com/item/404 Source: "For the most part we were considered "white" which got me into some odd conversations when someone was against "inter-racial (i.e. black/white) dating" or someone had less than enlightened views about African-Americans. Because there were few so Asians, Chinese were considered "another type of white" just like someone who was Polish or Lebanese." www.quora.com/How-are-Asians-treated-in-the-Deep-South-of-the-US/answer/Joseph-Wang-9?srid=z7MF
It depends on the community. In the East Coast there are more Syrians, Lebanese, Palestinians, , Jordanians and Yemenis. On the West Coast there are more Iranians, Armenians, and Assyrians, except in the Bay Area where there are big Yemeni, Syrian,Lebanese, and Palestinian communities.
The West Coast Asian's are much more open minded it seems and less ignorant overall about different groups of people that are Non Far Eastern Asian Born or in Origins. If you go to Northern California though The East Asian's there seem way more in touch with there roots but not as much as they are in The East Coast. You guys should do a video of Midwest Asians vs Southern Asian's.
And that you can find a lot more generations of Asians outside Chinatowns and Korea towns. Fitting the trend since WWII, most of them live in a more suburban area. And actually West Coast has more recent immigrants, and generally care WAY more about what's going on in Asia. For example, Chinese newspapers in Chinatown, Seattle has really interesting reports regarding political and economic news about China, while those of Philly's Chinatown are... NYT/WP/WSJ/CNN Chinese edition... Keeps talking about Obamacare and Trump, and all other stuff.
1:52 made me laugh so hard because that is literally my life XDDD (just yellow not pink)!! I'm Asian from Austria, there should be third category of Euro-Asians too!
I'm from florida too and everything they said about east coast asians didn't even represent like the south east asians. all they did was cali vs ny asians.
i'm an "east coast asian" and i've experienced racism all my life, including the physical manifestation in the form of violence multiple times. growing up in the 1970s and 80s, there were no asian culture on mainstream tv. in sf during this time you would see more asian culture on public (cable) tv there. people here in nyc are way more mean, aggressive, violent, racist; including the "do you speak english?" or one time trying to help a tourist on thestreet and a hispanic says to me "you're chinese, why can't you speak her language?" she's not speaking chinese. pacific northwest for me should i move.
+twitch.tv/lesbianturtle People that probably subscribe to this channel are probably dime a dozen. Asians from teens to mid 20's. Come from affluent or upper-middle-class background. self-proclaimed foodie or Yelp "elite". Photographer and/or model sipping boba outside a cafe in the valley till 1am holding their girl's LV purse waiting for their hella-flush Infiniti or Lancer Evo to warm up. Round that off with sneaker culture, the gym and raves and Berkeley.
I prefer the sound of the East Coast. Why would you want to live in a bubble? One of the best things about humanity is diversity in my opinion. Not to mention driving everywhere sounds long, expensive and terrible for the environment. I probably prefer NY because it sounds a lot like London. A lot of foreigners are first or second generation, everyone takes public transport and its super multicultural.
+Eli benz NYC has beaches (Orchard Beach, Coney Island Beach, South Beach (in Staten Island), Rockaway Beach, etc). There's also Jones Beach and Long Beach on LI (Long Island). Orchard Beach, Coney Island Beach, Rockaway Beach, Jones Beach and Long Beach gets lots of tourists and a lot of us NYers visit those beaches in the summer. Manhattan is the only borough to not have a beach "In NY everything is far and it takes hours just to get somewhere while taking public transportation." That is 100% a lie, you probably haven't even been to NYC. Everything is not far and it definetly doesn't take hours to get somewhere. LA traffic is 3x times worse. However, I do agree that a lot of subway cars are dirty but not extremely dirty. "LA has more ethnic foods than NY and they have better authentic food too." That is just an opinion and there is ton of ethnic food in both NYC and LA. Most of us NATIVE New Yorkers (NYC, LI or Upstate) AREN'T rude, that's a common stereotype and misconception. Most of us are actually nice, friendly and helpful. There is this lady that says "Good Morning" to everyone on the bus everyday she comes on. Also, most people that say that NYers are rude probably got that from spending time in Midtown Manhattan. 95% of people in Midtown Manhattan are tourists, so it's the tourists that are rude not us. A lot of us hold doors open for each other, including myself. Are there rude NYers?. Of course, but there are rude people everywhere. Most NYers aren't ignorant. NYC ranked 58 on the 150 Most Educated Cities in America list, LA ranked 87th. It seems Angelenos are more ignorant.
+simply.s Familiarity. I'm from the west coast and growing up with mostly other Asians that are also 1st generations makes you part of a larger group, because you can relate to almost everyone around you. Plus, there's a lot of Asian stuff that gets brought over because of the large bubbles (malls, food, etc.). IMO, one of the things I love most about having everything spread out is driving, because I love driving. I detest public transportation.
Fung Bros, you should revisit this now that you have been living in NYC for awhile. It should be really North East vs West Coast Asians since everything south of Philly is Southern in culture..
Mark Ramdarass They are talking about Asian bboying. A lot of Korean American and Filipinos young guys in LA are really into hip-hop dancing (and the rave scene). It comes from having more rebellious Asian Americans on the West Coast
From my experiences meeting Asians from the west coast, I've observed they're usually more sociable and care about their social status/image. While on the east coast, theres definitely a bigger importance on succeeding in terms of academics and professional careers. Just a general observation.
You guys are forgetting Florida!!! It's in the eat coast but it's the sunshine state and we have the beach right there so our dress is like the "west coast" but most Asians act like the "east coast". I don't know any other asian that I met who is 3rd generation and all of my friends parents and my parents are very serious about tradition and pursuing them medical or lawyer type jobs.
*i mean we dress like the "west coast" cuz it's hot here in Florida. But the way we act is mostly like "east coast" although there are a few of us that do pursue artistic/ musical careers :)
+Cassie Freitag They're also forgetting DC Asians, the nerdiest cluster of Asiandom to exist outside of China. Virtually everyone has at least one parent (if not both) with a PhD, MD, or JD. And the school systems are some of the best in the country.
James Kim I don't think it should be considered the south. Especially South Florida since it is very urban and hugely diverse with many cultures and ethnicities like New York. It's just not cold here compared to New York.
I love asians, and being that I'm from the west coast up north (Seattle) when I moved to the south eastern region, I never realized how much i missed being around them. I grew up in neighborhoods with them, shopped at their markets, like somehow the variety of Asian cultures infused with my culture (African American) so naturally. Ps- i have always tho had a thing for Asians even as a child.
+Julie A. yea but it's not considered part of the traditional East Coast, generally speaking. West, East, South, Midwest. You're in the South . . . buttfuckit whatevs
+Julie A. My thoughts exactly. The east coast is more than New York and the West coast is more than upper middle class California suburb that the Fung Brothers grew up in. Maybe after they got over the shock of that we should try telling them about all of the states in between and how gasp, those states have cities, and Americans of Asian descent too!
+International Observer well have you been to St Pete/Clearwater, FL??? sooo many asians..... are you from FL bc if you aren't, then you really dont have a say of what happens in FL
they are really talking about 3 major cities SF, LA and NY. And not even all that accurately as they only cover 1st generation kids from immigrant parents.
Born, Raised & Live in the East Coast my whole life. Proud to be an East Coast Asian! And everything they said about " East Coast Asians " is so true ha... but when it comes to saying mad or hella.. Hahaha I say both. I'm not sure why hahaha but I'll like to take a trip to the west coast sometime in the future.
I got both experiences! I was born and raised half my life near NYC then moved near San Diego when I was 9. Honestly, I like east coast better because I feel like Asians there are smarter (not saying west coast people are dumb) and most of the Asians there are more accepting. I tried getting into the Asian bubble in middle school, but oddly enough I was discriminated against my own race.
I'm from the west coast and i've been in east coast many times and it definitely has a lot of culture and its own vibe. But i would choose west coast because of the weather, less people, and more chill
As an east coast asian born in America in 1998 with asian immigrant parents & having traveled to the west coast a good amount of time through out the years i can say that i believe east coast asians are much more racially diverse. As i travel and go around California (specifically) i always see asians hanging out with other asians (not that theres anything wrong with that) but i never see asians in a diverse group of different races. Here on the east coast i can say i have around 5 black friends, 4 whites & 2 asians (and not even stating people i know.. 40% black, 30% white, 20% hispanic & 10% asian out of like 5000 people). And its not just me but rather every other asian you would encounter unless they lived that sheltered asian life growing up (which usually ends with one other friend that wont always be another asian). What im trying to get at is that i see more mixed racial dating here on the east coast with asians way more then the west. of course there are more asians in the west coast to meet but out of 100 asians you meet at least 80 of them dont date other asians (due to preference or whatever). also on the east young asians always try to fit in with other cultures within everyday life because theres not alot of asian culture here. but this is only from a highschoolers point of view so im probably not giving an accurate statement. and yes we experience alot of racism but like... its whatever haha, you get over it and move on with ur life. but yeah i just wanted to throw my point of view out there was an asian highschooler on the east coast. but idk lol. its a weird subject haha
Where you living at lol i live in nyc i barely see a asian guy wit a non asian girl lol only asian girls date outside there race here i lived in cali and arizona it seems like i saw more asian men with non asian women there compared to here
Thats so bullshit lol that happening in the east coast is like a lunar eclipse u barely see asian men with non asian women in the eastcoast only asian girls i see date outside there race in the east i live in queens ny
Cali is as big as like the distance from like Virginia all the way down to florida (probably not that much of a distance but something like that). while new york is on the top east of the east coast. stating cali as the general west coast because well it takes up most of the west coast. with most of the states around it having the same general culture and amount of asian ppl. unlike the east coast where u only see a mass amount of asian ppl in places like china town NY, Washington or Atlanta... its an inaccurate comparison. and stating NY fashion is very well spread out the whole east coast is true but there is a much less percent of asian ppl in the general east coast unless u live in specific areas where many asians live. and the fact that the south is part of the east coast as well (North Carolina down) u barley see asian ppl.... so yeah lol
Being an East Coast Asian that now lives on the West Coast, everything you guys mentioned in this video is insanely spot on. Lol at the 90 yr old grandma speaking perfect English, the EXACT same thing happened to me the first time I visited San Francisco!
I'm west coast but my fashion is more like east coast, I don't like the raggedy look of all the clothes here and prefer clean cut, glamorous, or classic outfits.
I've lived on both coasts, from NorCal and SoCal to DC and the DMV plus spent a lot of time in the NYC so I would have to agree with everything in this video.
it is DEFINITELY possible to live in an asian bubble in NYC. i went to a high school that was more than 40% asian. also we have bigger chinatowns (our asian population is more densely packed together) and better asian food than you guys :)
As an NY born &raised Korean, I would have to disagree with a few things: -Asians here bundle are up like penguins (Flushing,Queens: the epitome) -There are elite fashion/art schools in NY (SVA,Parsons, F.I.T). Therefore, a lot of Asians actually come here for the arts -Sports are actually pretty big here: Indoor/outdoor basketball, Handball, volleyball and football. -The east Coast girl, has never lived in an apartment. No one that lives in an apartment shovels their own snow... -The job market on the East Coast is totally different than that of the West Coast, also the term "awesome job" is relative to the individual, but that's a whole different conversation in itself. *Either ways, entertaining video!
I've been here in Northern California for a year from South East Asia, personally it's hella great to chill here. I'd like to explore East Coast though, like this video.
Can we please talk about the fact that they are forgetting THE WHOLE MIDDLE EAST AND THE REAL WESTASIA ??? NOT ALL ASIANS LOOK LIKE EAST ASIANS 🇦🇲🇬🇪🇮🇷🇮🇶🇮🇱🇶🇦🇱🇧🇹🇷🇦🇪DISCRIMINATION!!!!!
+Tony Chang (Tony The Changfilth) Same here. I'm half Asian and live in CA and most of my small circle of friends are white or Latino. I like bubble tea and Asian food, and go to China/HK every couple of years, but I'm very American otherwise.
The bubble thing I agree. I lived in Cali for 2 years then rest of my life in east coast in various areas (Brooklyn, Miami etc). I became mad diverse in terms of friends I have, but my cali friends are def still kickin it more with other asians if not their only their own race.
ummmm theres plenty! of room on the east coast..... its not crowded..... maybe in the north but youre forgetting the bottom half of the east coast! Hense why Disney WORLD only gets bigger & bigger & Disneyland has limited space to work with. I live in FL & I live 30 mins away from the #1 beach in the US.... who says we cant chill? If anything, Cali is soooo cramped. I have nothing against Cali, considering my mom is from there & her family lives there but this video literally is NY asians vs Cali asians
that's what I'm saying! I'm from florida too and EVERYTHING is spread out! idk where they got that the east coast is crowded but they totally didn't consider the south east part (florida). and all the asians here dress similarly to west coast bc it's so dang hot! this video is all types of misleading and makes west coast asians look like airheads
right!?! I totally don't have anything against Cali or anything bc half of my fam lives there (moms side). Even my uncles from Cali mentioned that our roads are wider, when they came to visit..... why? bc we have more room. boom.
+Erin T when they say east coast they mean north east. but i think we west coast im from cali have more in common with you Florida people then new York persay.
East coast raised (in PA specifically). One of four Asians in my whole high school... I remember visiting Asian friends in California and being shocked by how different it was.
imaprouduclabruin My parents moved here because of my education and stuff... you know how Korean people really stress on being good at English. It was only supposed to be a temporary thing but they ended up settling permanently. I was 4 BTW, now I've graduated secondary school here. I live in London, so god knows how many Asians there are, I just know that most aren't Korean. There's a lot of British Chinese people, and I know that they have the mixed-mentality thing like Asian-Americans have (I.e growing up with both British and Chinese cultures) but I can't elaborate further since I'm not part of it. I dont even have a lot of Korean friends, since I go to a pretty white/south Asian school. As far as I can tell, there is no avid Korean British culture, since second gen Koreans are really fricking rare. Usually Korean people hang around with eachother only, like in a clique, or reject their Korean root and end up becoming whitewashed.
There's a lot less compared to in the East Coast which was basically the point made in the video. Especially in the Bay Area where Asians are almost the majority.
rarecharisma Of course there's racism. My point is that it is too a smaller degree compared to the East Coast. Maybe some white guys will a racist joke, but it's nothing compared to Asians on the East Coast that get labeled, judged, and shunned everyday.
+Legend NO, it's not a joke when these white guys say racist shit. Mind you I never said there isn't racism in the east coast. I just moved to the east coast and I don't hear racist comments, but then I'm living in NYC and not in Virginia...
Racism is really subtle on the West Coast , unless you are in Oregon or Alaska. .Furthermore, there is a lot of racism within the Asian community, especially between East Asians and West Asians. East Asians discriminate against West Asians like nobody's business. I thinks it's partly because they don't really see us as Asian and partly they have never met West Asians, especially West Asians who have darker skin, are Muslim or are Jewish. This is despite the fact that there are a lot of us in LA , San Diego, and the Bay.
+Diamond Sparkle when most people refer to the the East Coast in the U.S., it's pretty much about the Northeast. It's the same case for West Coast, which pretty much refers to California but not Oregon or Washington.
+Katie Mei that's cool b/c I was born and raised in Florida too.I live waaaay too close to Oakleaf, where a bunch of people claim to be southern and raised in the country.Maybe it's just where I grew up,but there are aloooot of people like that.
a lot of this pretty spot on. yeah it was mostly NY vs. CA, but it was really entertaining. I'm from NC, the Raleigh area and you do find a lot more asian people working in described jobs for East Coast. yet again, there's just opportunities for medicine, engineering, and technology out here. Yeah so I've experienced some racial prejudice over the years but I've learned to live with it and never let it hold me down and this was mostly from people who weren't white but hey what can you do. overall though, I got to say I love it here and wouldn't change a thing. Shout out from NC!
I grew up on the Eastside of the U.S. (just not in NYC). I visited California and honestly liked the Westside more. Just because no snow, beaches and really warm.
this is mostly just NY vs Cali Asians, not all east coast asians live in cities
Michelle Liu KPOP
seokjin and mario
+International Observer this video is about Asians, so I don't know where the fuck your bullshit is coming from
stupid fuck
+bananashakes U mad bro?
+bananashakes yup you're so angry lol.
East coast Asians grow up tougher #nyc
you don't look tough
I'm just saying we do experience more racism and prejudice and grow accustomed to it while west coat Asians don't and would get butt hurt easy
Yep
There is a line but most of my advice to my friends is "suck it up and stop acting like a little bitch".If you don't like it be up front, not a passive aggressive little shit.
BTW I'm not implying your wrong b/c I grew up in the south and you just learn to grow thicker skin
I really enjoyed this! But its really NYC Asians vs Cali Asians.
The prevailing influence of the East Coast is inherited from the WASPy elitism of the private university system of the North East --set by the Ivy League Universities that catered to the scions of banking and industry from centuries back.

I am an older mom (I have 2 teenage boys now whom are 4th generation East Coast Asians.) Finally she blurted out "You speak PERFECT English!" ...my eyes bugged out. I guess I am an oddity here.

lol, thanks for the confirmation :D, In the LA area, I've been in some strange situations where I was at a non Asian establishment and the whole place is packed and I'm wondering where all the white people are!!
+jrmint2 +CalK,
Actually, I'm rather surprised as I rarely socialize outside of Asian Americans whom do not speak perfect english, and some even barely speak their ancestral tongue...if any. My husband for example doesn't speak a lick. I can only order food.
So this would also explain why when I walk into my son's school where 70% of the kids are Asian American, a lot of them stare. Hmmm.... a little deflating...lol.
I'm from Cali, and I feel like this is really just LA Asians, not all of Cali. And the east coast representation is really just NYC.
True that I live in west that's how most people are
yep I live in the west coast (ca) people here have a mixture of intelligence and "chillNESS" (?)
Kayla T. Same especially in l.a
tareeq brown there is no trend in west coast
very true
This is just stereotypical LA Asians vs NYC Asians...
ikr 😂 it's somewhat true, people in the west coast still have high expectations from their parents and we know that the $$ is important to make. But were laid back and relaxed when we want to (I live in the west coast and I'm Asian so yeh ^-^)
There's a sizable Asian population in Georgia too (which is still the east coast)! Some things applied but definitely not all.
I'm not even Asian wtf am I doing here
+שיר שחר same...but this is informatinal
You are so lost
+שיר שחר Checking out the hot asian chicks in the video? :)
+Jiu Jitsu Jonny They were hot?
+Husni Hassan Allahu Akbar?
bahah the racism comment reminded me of my internship in new York.
“But where are you really from?”
It is kind of weird.. I met an Asian guy that only spoke Spanish I was so confused lol
@@heavencasteel8277 how come?
...I'm from chicago. pls notice us
+Albert Guan Indianapolis...... I feel you. The midwest is so overlooked.
Fly-over country is the best. Midwesterners are overlooked all of the time because we don't live on one of the coasts.
+benseac agreed
I thought Asians avoided the midwest. They don't believe in rice there.
what? lol
I grew up in Maryland and there definitely a growing population of Asians in the Maryland, DC, Virginia region. I definitely agree that the racism towards Asians are more prevalent in the East Coast versus the west coast.
Same here, def want to move back into the West Coast though. Suits me better.
OMG tell me about it!
i think what area you were in makes a HUGE difference. I'm on the east coast (southwest MD) and my area has a huge asian population (20%+), and is very diverse in general so i've never felt discriminated against in that way. you're far more likely to find that kind of racism in rural parts of the southeast imo. once you get to the bigger cities from like DC to boston that becomes far rarer.
kirakinn AGREE!
So True. On the East Coast, especially in Massachusetts, white people NOT only discriminate against Asians, but thety play favorites with certain types of Asians, , especially East Asians and they really are racist towards Yemenis and Palestinians.
Arthur Hull Boston is the most racist city I've ever been too...more the any south rural area..not even joking
the sound of driving everywhere and not having to take public transportation sounded great until I actually visited LA. It's so spread out it takes forever getting to different places. People there are really hot though
it's the one thing I never miss.
i feel the same way about the distance. only ppl from cities w/ great public transpo. would find that irritating.
***** yup
Julie Chen not unless you live in the bay
Thats just L.A. we have the BART in the bay.
You should do East Asian vs Southeast Asian!
Diana Day as a filipino i think thats racist :/
And its not good to really to try to divide the asian american community
Diana Day 🤣🤣 im southeast asian. I can feel it
I bet for east
@Diana Day as Indonesian i think thats offensive. Poor you
Diana Day yeah and I wish your Vladimir people would stop messing around in southeast Asian.
+Detective Ena
where in Virginia? I lived in the Richmond area before I moved to NJ.
I remember there being lots of Indians there
Interceptor810 haha i grew up in Charlottesville!
NOVA has a ton of koreans and indians. I love it here.
I never lived in America but I like the east coast feel. It's more "serious," practical in terms of jobs, the fashion, the weather, etc.
+2SeungGDaeYang but it looks harder to live tho i would like to live in west coast
+KoreanClown Unless you put effort into your living I don't think so :) just find the right places where you think fits you best, especially the area's cost of living.
You live as serious as you yourself are
West Coast FTW. #jussayin 😝👌🏻

probably, because those states have huge asian populations
+King2Dope ny has about 5mil
+International Observer You should make a video about it IO!
***** Those are not either coast except Florida but no one really considers that east coast.
well what do you expect? you expect them to talk about all 50 states? Numbnuts! That's why it's west and east coast, duh!
This is more like California Asians v.s. New York Asians
Too be fair California is 2/3 of the west lol
They should really get an East Coast Asian from the southern area
+Karen Grace the first time i heard an elderly asian speak perfect english was in DimSum!
I bet you've never heard a Mid-aged Asian with a Texan accent before. I have! And it was pretty cool.
Made me want to hit them with a potato every time
GOD DAMMIT Y U EVERYWHERE?????
i hate seeing you
Cool u like all asian channels GET YOUR FUCKIN ASS BACK TO JKN WE NEED U
Viet Lee suppppppppppppppppppp you here too from JK news froneverworld now the fung bro
Would your name be Henry by some odd chance?
this was a pretty interesting video, but coming from someone who grew up on the east coast for half of her life and then west coast for the other half, some of these stereotypes are just that: stereotypes. for example, i personally feel like i got more uptight after being on the west coast because within the bay area, the competition is crazy. there's rarely any room for relaxation when you're constantly getting pressured to "get ahead".
also, because the east coast is so diverse in terms of differentiating state cultures, i feel like this isn't the most solid representation. but either way, like you guys said, we ourselves make the best of where we are in the end.
CJBolan Yeah Virginia is like the crossroads lol
They joined Mississippi’s infamous White citizen’s councils, became members of White churches, were defined as White on driver’s licenses, and could marry White." essays.backintyme.com/item/404
Source: "For the most part we were considered "white" which got me into some odd conversations when someone was against "inter-racial (i.e. black/white) dating" or someone had less than enlightened views about African-Americans.
DC is alright for asians.
NYC's Chinatown began in 1840 ... way before West Coast Asians.
Is that surprising? The Gold Rush was what brought Asians over to the West Coast which was in 1849, so it's really common sense.
I thought San Francisco's china town was the oldest in USA.
Legend I thought it was the rail workers?
And that you can find a lot more generations of Asians outside Chinatowns and Korea towns. Fitting the trend since WWII, most of them live in a more suburban area. And actually West Coast has more recent immigrants, and generally care WAY more about what's going on in Asia. For example, Chinese newspapers in Chinatown, Seattle has really interesting reports regarding political and economic news about China, while those of Philly's Chinatown are... NYT/WP/WSJ/CNN Chinese edition... Keeps talking about Obamacare and Trump, and all other stuff.
Ok, and?
1:52 made me laugh so hard because that is literally my life XDDD (just yellow not pink)!! I'm Asian from Austria, there should be third category of Euro-Asians too!
Haha bin ebenfalls Asiatin aus Oesterreich, was fuer ein Zufall! ^^
milkyway Ahaha so eine kleine Welt XD!!
European Asians don't count here; conduct your own video and compare it with US Asians over euro asians
Omg ich bin auch aus Österreich:D aba nur halb Asiatin
omg it's Maqaroon!! I'm a big fan of your crafts! OvO
So Florida is basically like the west coast?
+BowsAreForPros its the 'California of the east', says my mom's side that lives in Cali lol I'm from FL btw
I'm from florida too and everything they said about east coast asians didn't even represent like the south east asians. all they did was cali vs ny asians.
+Erin T south east as in Malaysia and Singapore???
Anthony Tran as in florida or the other states that are south of ny
just a bit confusing
i'm an "east coast asian" and i've experienced racism all my life, including the physical manifestation in the form of violence multiple times. growing up in the 1970s and 80s, there were no asian culture on mainstream tv. in sf during this time you would see more asian culture on public (cable) tv there. people here in nyc are way more mean, aggressive, violent, racist; including the "do you speak english?" or one time trying to help a tourist on thestreet and a hispanic says to me "you're chinese, why can't you speak her language?" she's not speaking chinese. pacific northwest for me should i move.
West Coast: Popular People
East Coast: Powerful People
I lived on both coast and there's no difference. Both groups are very cliquish, pretentious, and materialistic.
wow this is redundant
twitch.tv/lesbianturtle It really is.
Round that off with sneaker culture, the gym and raves and Berkeley.
no
I prefer the sound of the East Coast.
Eli benz Some but not all.
Eli benz You have those tourists and tourists that get mad at you for slightly bumping into them.
Eli benz Yeah, YOU haven't experienced it but me and many others have.
Lol' I' from East Coast and I have a shirt that says "West Coast Best Coast"😂
Fung Bros, you should revisit this now that you have been living in NYC for awhile. It should be really North East vs West Coast Asians since everything south of Philly is Southern in culture..
whoa! bboying / breakdancing was born in the BRONX not the west coast.
Mark Ramdarass also was pioneered by Latinan American and black people...not Asians .
Chad Harper No. It was just blacks.
Russell Westbrook Fan since 2010 do your history, it was black people and latinos.
Mark Ramdarass They are talking about Asian bboying. A lot of Korean American and Filipinos young guys in LA are really into hip-hop dancing (and the rave scene). It comes from having more rebellious Asian Americans on the West Coast
Yeah it's just fun it is done all over the world in my opinion it started in Chicago btw
But the way we act is mostly like "east coast" although there are a few of us that do pursue artistic/ musical careers :)
i was on my phone when i types it :P. there was no edit on the mobile version......
+Cassie Freitag Isn't Florida technically considered as part of the South? I always viewed your state as an entirely different region . . .
5:32 has me ROLLLIN!!!!
"Let me get some of that mushu"😂😂😩lmfao done af
Any Asians from neither coast? AKA Midwest and Southern US? Because there certainly aren't a lot of Asians here...
+Hannah C. Upper class California boy myopia. Everyone lives in LA or NYC.
+Hannah C. Born in Ohio here. We end up being obligatory representatives of the Asian race as a result.
+Hannah C. where you from? mid west or south?
Robles Tako Both. I've lived in the south for 16 years and in the Midwest for 5 years. :) Never lived on either coast.
Hannah C. I west coast
didn't know the east coast only consisted of New York City.... What about Florida? I'm 1000000% sure that's on the east coast.
+Julie A. Florida is part of the South, isn't it? You don't consider yourself a Southerner?
*facepalm* Florida is also on the East coast.
+Julie A. yea but it's not considered part of the traditional East Coast, generally speaking.
Florida is the south , although it is geographically on the eastern coast, historically it always and will always be the south
What about Floridian asians? Lol Florida has beaches and isn't that businessy
+International Observer you just sound salty as fuck lol
I've seen like a bunch of asians in Florida.
+International Observer well have you been to St Pete/Clearwater, FL??? sooo many asians..... are you from FL bc if you aren't, then you really dont have a say of what happens in FL
+Katie Mei soooooo many Filipinos in Jacksonville
wowokwow I've never been there but thats cool! I was just stating my area Sarasota/Tampa & inbetween
I'm glad the east coast asians aren't bubbled as hard cause if they were I wouldn't know like half my friends in the DMV
what does that mean? Department of Motor Vehicles?
lol DC, MD, and VA jrmint2
lol! Thanks for clarifying ;)
a lot of ppl in the dmv area aren't like what she just explained about east coast asians unless ur from the city. in the suburbs its more different
eyyy maryland here
lol the east coast girl is mainly taking about the north east.she is excluding florida
Cuz the number of Asians in each state decreases the further South you go on the East
Increases in South Florida tho
they are really talking about 3 major cities SF, LA and NY. And not even all that accurately as they only cover 1st generation kids from immigrant parents.
We Northern east coasters consider Florida as part of the south. Sorry.
i was abt to comment the same. the title is a little misleading. tbh i live in ct and even here is different from ny (much less public transportation)
Hip hop and breaking really didn't come from the west coast
+Alex Kang You're right, it was created in the South Bronx in 1973 by DJ Kool Herc.
+Alex Kang But the west coast asian dance alot better than the east coast
+dominatorX yep plus all the best dancers and crews are from the west coast!
+Sierra117 they're not from the west coast. All the best dancers and crews travel TO the west coast because that's where all the opportunities are.
You're right it started here in all 5 boroughs here in NY with MC'ing DJ'ing and Breakdancing
I love how since 6:40 the right dude is moving while he isn't talking :)
+volcomrice In San Francisco and in the Bay Area in general I see many Asian people hang out with non-Asians.
College life will be way better. so much more free time bro. we're both class of '16 im assuming :)
Cali is as big as like the distance from like Virginia all the way down to florida (probably not that much of a distance but something like that). while new york is on the top east of the east coast. stating cali as the general west coast because well it takes up most of the west coast. with most of the states around it having the same general culture and amount of asian ppl. unlike the east coast where u only see a mass amount of asian ppl in places like china town NY, Washington or Atlanta... its an inaccurate comparison. and stating NY fashion is very well spread out the whole east coast is true but there is a much less percent of asian ppl in the general east coast unless u live in specific areas where many asians live. and the fact that the south is part of the east coast as well (North Carolina down) u barley see asian ppl.... so yeah lol
The saddest part I'm east coast I don't even use trains or subways at all
Where's all my Midwest and Southern Asians?!
Spot on! Great video! Nice going!
I love your videos! That was really interesting! It was long but at the end I was like "aw man, it's over?" haha
I live in the west coast (southern california to be exact) but I see myself living in the east coast. I love city life!
+Sophie C prepare to pay for the rent lol xD
Same. I live in Orange County and I want to live in NY so bad
I live in orange county too!!!! OC is just a suburban area of nothing but beaches smh
I live in orange county too!!!! OC is just a suburban area of nothing but beaches smh
+Sophie C You can live in San Fran lol.. But probably not the same as NY
tupac isnt from west coast
True was born in Brooklyn
+Lorraine Rosario born in Harlem*
+Marko J THANK YOU! lol
Yeah but he repped the West Coast.
Anthony Morales yo crazy he mostly from east though
The East Coast is not always cold...Georgia and Florida guys...
+LindaR5 Literally 78 degrees rn in Georgia. And it's winter
Florida wouldn't really be as East since it's down in the South.
Chou Tzuyu [Twice] East COAST. That includes Florida. Any state along the Atlantic Ocean. :)
What is this thing called "winter"?
In vedio
East coast=new york
West coast=California
Being an East Coast Asian that now lives on the West Coast, everything you guys mentioned in this video is insanely spot on. Lol at the 90 yr old grandma speaking perfect English, the EXACT same thing happened to me the first time I visited San Francisco!
Watching almost two years later and only now noticed Chance's Favorite Song beats in the background! 0:52-3:10
I'm west coast but my fashion is more like east coast, I don't like the raggedy look of all the clothes here and prefer clean cut, glamorous, or classic outfits.
should rename your title to California Asian vs New York Asian. You guys even travel?
the east/west coast bubble is 10x worse than the asian bubble. Just imagine them combined.
Yall need to talk about the Asians in the SOUTH. Don't forget us!
Jennie P Thank you they more Cultured.
This is so freaking hilarious!!! Thanks guys! 😂
I've lived on both coasts, from NorCal and SoCal to DC and the DMV plus spent a lot of time in the NYC so I would have to agree with everything in this video.
My life goal is to move to California, you cant beat the weather, and life is just soooo relaxing over there~
Agree! New Yorkers makes a big deal out of everything and anything. Every day at work I'm like dude fucken chill out!!
lol tell me about it.
Good luck with your rent
They complain about the weather like dude it’s not hard put a coat on and some Timbs and you’re good💀💀
it is DEFINITELY possible to live in an asian bubble in NYC. i went to a high school that was more than 40% asian.
also we have bigger chinatowns (our asian population is more densely packed together) and better asian food than you guys :)
Better dim sum? Doubt it; you must be joking.
As an NY born &raised Korean, I would have to disagree with a few things:
-Asians here bundle are up like penguins (Flushing,Queens: the epitome)
-There are elite fashion/art schools in NY (SVA,Parsons, F.I.T). Therefore, a lot of Asians actually come here for the arts
-Sports are actually pretty big here: Indoor/outdoor basketball, Handball, volleyball and football.
Also Laguardia too is also an art school
I've been here in Northern California for a year from South East Asia, personally it's hella great to chill here. I'd like to explore East Coast though, like this video.
I grew up in Cali and now I'm in Boston. I like both. I just reaaaallly HATE the snow here.
I'm from the East Coast and I HATE living here, I desperately want to visit California
Can we please talk about the fact that they are forgetting THE WHOLE MIDDLE EAST AND THE REAL WESTASIA ??? NOT ALL ASIANS LOOK LIKE EAST ASIANS 🇦🇲🇬🇪🇮🇷🇮🇶🇮🇱🇶🇦🇱🇧🇹🇷🇦🇪DISCRIMINATION!!!!!
Fuck off . You're 5 years late for that
*I'm a West Coast Asian, but I don't fit in with other Asians very well and I don't drink bubble tea or go out much.*
+Tony Chang (Tony The Changfilth) Same here. I'm half Asian and live in CA and most of my small circle of friends are white or Latino. I like bubble tea and Asian food, and go to China/HK every couple of years, but I'm very American otherwise.
+Tony Chang (Tony The Changfilth) No drink bubble tea!!!!??
Vincent Nguyen Afraid not.
***** A shame that I had to be by myself often since most of my friends had jobs and other priorities.
***** I should add that many of my Asian classmates were a-holes. Long story.
The bubble thing I agree. I lived in Cali for 2 years then rest of my life in east coast in various areas (Brooklyn, Miami etc). I became mad diverse in terms of friends I have, but my cali friends are def still kickin it more with other asians if not their only their own race.
Really great video. Good job !!!
I'm Asian on the east coast (Ny) but I act more like a typical west coast Asian lmao. I need to move...
What is a typical west coast Asian?
E Sen same man
East coast Asian: (-.-)
West coast Asian: (-_-)
Angelina kinda looks like CL when she smiles.....she has her eyes :)
+Angelina H. Belle You're welcome sunshine 😇
+RocketBoyy123 umm have u ever seen CL?
This is history to all yo mysteries . Great video i love it. Not going to geo class next year lol..
from NYC here but wow that west coast girl is super cute n she got such a soothing voice..aww she could be radioshow host, i'd listen to her all day.
Also, there are more Asian Indians on the East Coast as a percentage of total Asians.
+Debapam Bose Sadly nobody cares about Indians bro!
+Trevor Phillips Y u say that?
#filampride
ummmm theres plenty! of room on the east coast..... its not crowded..... maybe in the north but youre forgetting the bottom half of the east coast!
+Katie Mei so you're from the east coast? is this video true
Robles Tako no its not true. its SoCal vs New York
ATLANTA ASIANS REPRESENT!
neither of these represent atl asians tho...
steveyk amen!
I've lived on both East Coast & West Coast, so i can relate to everything they're talking about haha.. Difficult to classify myself..
East coast raised (in PA specifically). One of four Asians in my whole high school... I remember visiting Asian friends in California and being shocked by how different it was.
west coast best coast.
It would be interesting to see European Asian culture because that gets overlooked a lot... don't even know if that exists yet tho...
imaprouduclabruin They could invite me! I'm from the UK but my ethnicity is Korean.
imaprouduclabruin My parents moved here because of my education and stuff... you know how Korean people really stress on being good at English. Usually Korean people hang around with eachother only, like in a clique, or reject their Korean root and end up becoming whitewashed.
imaprouduclabruin I'm half thai and living in Austria. Btw there are also many Asians in Germany. There are not much in France I think
The East Coast gal is a cutie!
Gal?
lmao! "oh you're korean? i love korean food" love it
I enjoyed this a lot lol
West coast chick much hotter.
There's racism in the west coast.
Lol more racism in the south, than Cali
There's a lot less compared to in the East Coast which was basically the point made in the video. Especially in the Bay Area where Asians are almost the majority.
rarecharisma Of course there's racism. My point is that it is too a smaller degree compared to the East Coast. Maybe some white guys will a racist joke, but it's nothing compared to Asians on the East Coast that get labeled, judged, and shunned everyday.
+rarecharisma in general there's more racism in the east coast...
+Legend NO, it's not a joke when these white guys say racist shit.
Mind you I never said there isn't racism in the east coast. I just moved to the east coast and I don't hear racist comments, but then I'm living in NYC and not in Virginia...
West coast has less Trump/racist folk
but we have more stupid sjw's
The Fabulous Greninja sjw? whats that?
篠崎悟 social justice Warrington
Coffee Owl Racist folk? Bruh you just assuming we all racist?
Racism is really subtle on the West Coast , unless you are in Oregon or Alaska. .Furthermore, there is a lot of racism within the Asian community, especially between East Asians and West Asians. East Asians discriminate against West Asians like nobody's business. I thinks it's partly because they don't really see us as Asian and partly they have never met West Asians, especially West Asians who have darker skin, are Muslim or are Jewish. This is despite the fact that there are a lot of us in LA , San Diego, and the Bay.
Bay Area Reppin and the boba and vape is SO ACCURATE
If you wanna see how an asian from Texas speak, youtube search "Asian store owner punks" lol
WE GOT BIGGIE
Automatic win :P
when you're asian in the Midwest smh
Wow they left out florida for east coast.
+Diamond Sparkle barely any asians there
Florida is alot more south???but okay??
+Diamond Sparkle when most people refer to the the East Coast in the U.S., it's pretty much about the Northeast. It's the same case for West Coast, which pretty much refers to California but not Oregon or Washington.
+wowokwow yes its south but last time I checked, its also on the east coast soooo. coming from a floridian
