Edwardian Lady who Lived with a Poor Family (Shocked by Working Class Life)

  • Find out what shocked an Edwardian lady when she lived with a working class family in London. Life and work for most people in the Edwardian era was hard, physical and repetitive. Conditions had begun to improve on the Dickensian suffering the Victorians endured in sweatshops, but concern for staff welfare had a long way to go. This was still an age when sickness and inability to work could mean starvation. Women were working more and more to contribute to the family budget - and not only as maids or nannies, but in industry too. Society still frowned upon women working in factories and considered husbands who allowed their wives in them to be of low character. Working class employees were poorly paid, worked long hours and endured unhealthy conditions that were, often times, dangerous. In the early 1900s there were few people in public life speaking up for the plight of the factory worker. There was a woman, however, who was prepared to expose these conditions to the middle and upper classes, from which she belonged. This is the true story of a woman who disguised herself to live and find a job as a factory worker with a working class family. Find out what surprised and shocked her as she discovers Edwardian life for everyday people.

I just love listening to old stories of our elderly people, especially when they seem super serious, but, the story that they tell, the story is extremely hilarious, and they tell these stories with a straight face, which makes the story even more hilarious.

      @Henchy3rd it's different per region and per country of origin. We're used to thinking of swear shops as a bygone, "third world" issue. However, every single tech company in existence relies on slave labor in some way. For example, cobalt mines employ slave labor; as it powers every cell phone and computer in existence.

    • @JK-bd4gs
      @JK-bd4gs ปีที่แล้ว

      @@henchy3rd I've been working 12 hour shifts 6-6 in an industrial bakery in the UK for the last month. We get 3 20 minute breaks which we aren't paid for and are only long enough for a fag and a drink, maybe some food. You're left in the same place for the entire shift, usually near an oven, and paid 9.50/hr with no extra pay for working unsociable hours. I can guarantee they would have us as slaves if it was legal. So while we have it better than countries like China, Sri Lanka etc there's certainly no shortage of stingy employers who do the bare minimum just because they're required to by law.

    In the early 70s, I left home a week after my 17th birthday. I went to work for a horse trainer. I lived in a horse stall. My bed was several bales of hay pushed together. When you think about it, not many people stood up for the poor, but they were people who had the means to bring it to the attention of those who could do more. Without news article's, book's, or just someone pushing for reform, no law's would have been changed. I believe the Lord puts on our heart's to help those in need, even if we are in need ourselves.

    Elements of this reminded me of the working-class community I grew up in 50 plus years ago. At that time there was a deep strain of righteousness and loyalty amongst those with relatively little .

    In the 1970's while at college I worked in a factory that used a lot of bench saws . When I first started I noticed how many workers had bits of fingers missing ! Whilst I was there I recall one day a panic going around because the Factory Inspectorate were on the way ( hardly a suprise visit !). In very quick time safety guards were put on the machines . These guards had been removed because they slowed down productivity which didn't suit the bosses nor the workers whose wages included elements of piece work . As soon as the inspectorate left the guards came off again !

      Forty years ago I worked for Australia's largest bank, then government owned.
      For part of my time with them I operated a very old off set printer. Safety covers had to be kept off because it paper jammed all the time and ran too hot with them on.
      Jams still happened. If you stopped the machine to clear the jam, all paper still on its way through joined the jam.
      We were adept(usually) at slowing the machine n grabbing the offending papers. (If our printing output fell too low, we were criticised etc)
      I got a long sleeve caught once n to this day have tendonitis etc from that. However i heard of amputations in other plants.
      Also we were supplied one pair of ear muffs with no cleaning supplies for them. Not were we supplied with protective gear when using chemical fluids that literally melted screwdriver handles.
      Because of the noise, I've got industrial deafness. Although most people my age have this to some extent due to rock concerts!
      I left that department, but it kept operating for at least another ten years like that, until a brave person refused to be intimidated and worked to rule.

    Here is proof again that unionizing is the best option for any employees, because waiting for employers to grow generous doesn't improve conditions for generations of workers. Decent treatment, conditions, and pay must be demanded from some employers and then vigorously maintained. There are always a few good employers, but they encourage unionization.

    • @debbylou5729
      @debbylou5729 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You would be correct except for one thing. Companies make or break it on productivity. I’ve seen unions run industries into the ground. Strikes over pennies per hour create the loss of millions a day that can’t be recovered. I worked for a construction company that was going under. They offered the Union everything they asked for. The only thing that was different was that the company asked that the union accept a 3% burden of the losses that were caused by lack of quality. The Union said absolutely not. The union, and the actual people in the union who wanted this, now get 100% of nothing

    • @playlisttarmac

      @@debbylou5729sounds like the union there was not truly for the workers (unless the wage was lower than a living wage) I am a member of my work union when there are wage discussions several unions from different industries/departments usually join and cooperate. This usually ends up less than some want and more than others want. Members also usually vote on things like this such as do we want more wages or more flexible work hrs etc. Money was not the main thing in the last negotiations.

    The 'knocker-up man' was a chap who would walk round the streets early in the morning and wake up workers before their shifts... usually in mining communities where blocks of terraced houses were owned by the mines, but I suppose also sometimes in factory-towns with similar conditions. Some things never change. The well off still have no idea how the other half live. Even people who have been lucky enough to always have a job and never been forced to claim unemployment money don’t understand what it’s really like. I shall never forget the look of shock on one of my employers face when I told her that when I was looking for work and my daughter had just finished college and was trying hard to find ANY job, that I only received £50 per week for us both to live on and £100 of that each month had to go towards my rent “ because your daughter ought to be working and contributing!”. And I only claimed Jobseekers Allowance because I used up my savings to live on while trying to find another job.

    This reminds me of the rich people trying to understand how the other half live by doing a foodstamp budget challenge, these videos were out a few years ago. They carried with them their own prejudices and preconceptions of how people on the dole live.
    Interesting enough I see the same parallels with this well to do young woman, who had to be supplemented because she couldn't make due on 3 shillings a week. She referred to the hardworking housewives as unthrifty and how many could not save for a rainy day.
    Well considering most of the money made probably went towards rent, just like today no wonder there was no money left over.

    Wow a meat auction..?? and I thought the 50% off meat bin at the Albertsons was a good thing for the impoverished.. still i think I'd trust a bargin meat bin from the more hygienic butcher at the food shop..than a meat auction...never know when your beef..might be rover or Figaro..but certainly sounds interesting..but frugality is a gift and art form... and canned broth and bouillon cubes are a big help..seems the things from back then are still teaching today..😊..oh my goodness i wonder what these lasses would think about harlequin novels or pirates of the Caribbean they'd probably enjoy sparrow.. hahaha lol..these broads sound like my mom and her co worker's i grew up with..lol
