I dated a girl that was truly Indie/alternative back in the day. She was an A&R person. An infinitesimal small segment of the population liked this music contemporaneously. Worse, most people would criticize the music if they heard it. Although stereotypically, people are right to make fun of bandwagon posuers. Far too many were A-holes about the music before they "discovered" it.
Good video. If I may add some context from a couple biographies about the band: 1. The cover of Unknown Pleasures was actually chosen completely by Factory Records graphic designer Peter Saville. If I recall correctly, he was tasked with designing the cover. I might mess up this fact but it might have been Sumner or Saville that chose the image. The entire band DID however, choose the cover of Closer with Saville, depicting a mausoleum. 2. The author in this video is accurate though in his statement about Ian sending a message, albeit through his lyrics. Many of his lyrics were exclusively about his life, but no one really payed attention. It’s believed by those close to him that his lyrics did indicate his impending death. The lyrics of New Dawn Fades, as well as one of the last songs he wrote called In a Lonely Place (performed by New Order) illustrate this. 3. It’s amazing how he was able to write such good lyrics in his early 20s. One thing to mention is that this band also garnered a lot of attention because their lyrics were unusually poetic, introspective, and complex compared to other bands in the scene, at least during the Warsaw era. 4. If you look up where the name comes from, it’s imperative to know that a lot of historians believe that the book is mostly a sensationalist, fetishized account of concentration camps. That was actually a sub-genre at the time. So, it’s entirely possible that these “joy divisions” mentioned in the book are a work of fiction. 5. Epilepsy medications were awful at the time, so in addition to his decaying marriage, love for another woman, baby that he couldn’t hold due to seizures, and immense pressure to keep performing, it’s also hypothesized that the emotional instability caused by his medications contributed to his death. However, his wife mentions in her memoir that he did often talk about wanting to die young.
3:38 Looking inside the cover, in the back, was a child Nazi solder, Surrounded, scared, surrendering to the Allies, so there was some symbolism with the cover
To save everyone some time: first, you must imagine a world without Black Sabbath… but then everyone expects tea-time and labradors, hmm… oh, and beer after work, but guess what? There’s this very old strain of Marijuana called King Louis… so… why’s it called that “these days?”
