You keep bringing up books I have but haven't read yet. I'll definitely have to move this one up on my TBR. How sad for Mary Shelley to be so right and not be recognized for it. And how sad to be the last woman of her group. Anyway, excellent review!

Thnx! :) Yeah, Mary Shelley's literary career was as tragic as the stories she wrote. :( But, at least she's recognized now as the genius she was. And yeah, I could recommend this, but probably just to people who already have a taste for her kind of Romantic writing. People who like their prose less florid or the plotting tighter may not come away liking this book. But still, way ahead of its time, regardless. :)

I've always wondered how this book was, especially considering it's quite a bit longer than Frankenstein. It's too bad to hear that she was self indulgent with the prose. I even find Frankenstein hard to get into, but it's definitely of the time.
Appreciate all the background context, great review!

Thnx! And yeah, it got pretty longwinded at times, although for those who want to explore the origins of the apocalyptic fiction which is all the rage today, I'd say it's worth a read.

I've heard about this book for years and years but never read it. I think I'll have to take a look.

If you like Frankenstein or other such Romantic works, I think there's ample here to enjoy. :)

Do you prefer the 1818 text of frankenstein?

I'm pretty sure that's the one I've read (and reread and reread, lol). As I'm given to understand it, the tone is more appropriately pessimistic than the later revised version.
