Great presentation on PSPME-IMS. Perhaps it would be advantageous for the NFSTC to consider evaluating stand-off Hyperspectral Imaging (HSI) and Raman chemical analysis devices to augment the utility of PSPME-IMS systems? Continuous monitoring systems utilizing eye-safe lasers, such as those offered by ChemImage Corporation, could have great utility in USCBP and local law enforcement operations and complement the use of IMS systems by flagging target containers, objects and/or persons for further investigation. For instance, the data generated from Dr. Henric Ostmark's stand-off Raman chemical sensing systems were utilized to convict the operators of clandestine drug/explosives laboratories in Sweden, and could have a significant impact against the drug cartel supplied meth labs and DTOs here in the U.S. Tennessee leads the nation in terms of meth lab proliferation and meth use, and NFSTC members may have read that Johnny Cash's great-niece, Courtney Cash, was tragically murdered earlier this year in a brutal meth-related stabbing. Ms. Cash's boyfriend was also injured in the stabbing, but managed to flee the scene with their infant daughter and was later treated at Vanderbilt Medical Center. If the local sheriff had access to these technologies, they might have been able to detect and shut down the clandestine meth lab before anyone was harmed. Perhaps the NFSTC could partner with the Drug Enforcement Administration to make grants available from federal forfeiture funds for smaller sheriffs offices who are being overwhelmed by the dangerous multinational drug cartels, DTOs and drug dealers to procure these technologies including PSPME-IMS, HSI and Raman trace chemical sensing systems? District Attorney Tom Hogan has characterized the DTOs as dangerous criminal organizations that "kill cops, kill judges, kill prosecutors and don't think twice about killing civilians," and all while "hiding in plain sight." He also stated that the $60 million Lopez Lemus DTO had slowly infiltrated rural Chester County over a 20 year period. I hope that these suggestions are helpful and thank you for your important work.
