I love how you seem to get a lot of enjoyment out of the sound effects and soundtrack, something I'm also a big fan of, it's usually overlooked, so I appreciate the attention it got in this video.

The fact that “Far Out” (and the Pac-Man World 1 & 2 soundtracks, for that matter) didn’t land on lists of best video game soundtracks (even if it’s lists that are top 100s at the minimum) is a crime against humanity (and gaming culture).

I’m so glad someone had the confidence to praise the hell out of King Galatian for being a very fresh Galaga reference that makes it feel like both a Galaga/Galaxian and an addictively executed 2D platformer like the late 20th Century (from Mario 2 & 3 in 1988 to Super Mario World 2 in 1995) Super Mario games at the same time!

I remember trying to beat King Galaxian when I was 4 years old back in 2003. It literally took me *TWO YEARS* to do it. I didn't win that level until I was in 1st grade in 2005. 😦

@@KingKlonoa I’m still waiting for J’s Reviews to make his Pac-Man review series at some point, like “Why Pac-Man is Important”, “Why Ms. Pac-Man is Better Than the Original”, “Why Pac-Man World 1 So Great”, “Why Pac-Man World 2 is My Favourite Pac-Man Game”, “Why Pac-Man World 3 is a Failure”, “Why Pac-Man World Rally is the Most Underrated Spin-off” and “Why Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures is Better as a Game Series”.
Now, as for ExoParadigmGamer’s Remake or Rebreak on Pac-Man World 1, on the other hand, while it can be nitpicky for someone who “likes” the game yet he “doesn’t see why it’s the favorite game of a few people out there” even though he sometimes said amazing (or at least decent) things about it like it’s soundtrack (very unfortunately, a minority of people use Far Out as an example of top-notch gaming music, even for their high standards compared to Generation A pop music, but while EPG didn’t use this song as an example of a great PMW1 song tied with a few others, I think he still gave a shout-out to FO in the credits, in fact, it’s so good that if he were to revive the hilariously lovable monster that is Whiny Bitch Gamer, he could make “Why The Second Reality Project Reloaded is the WURST GAME IN THE WURLD!!! (A WBG Rant-sponse to ROR: TSRPR), “Why Pac-Man IS THE WURST VIDIO GAME FRANCHIZE!!! (A WBG Rant-view)” and “Why Pac-Man and the University of Pac-Land SMELLS LIKE PEE!!! (A WBG Rant-sponse to EPG)”) I saw from your top comment of this video that regardless of how (partially) contrasting your opinions on the PS1 version of PMW1 are, you strongly appreciate the effort he put into making this video (back in the late 2010s when reviews were an hour long compared to half an hour in the mid 10s) and it would be really awesome when he also does Xross Platform or Remake or Rebreak on the Pac-Man World sequels (while I get why you don’t love PMW2 as much as PMW1, I’m glad you are still a fan of this game nonetheless because it’s my favourite game of 2002 (and of all time) like how Spyro Enter the Dragonfly is the other way around)

They use fairly unconventional but extremely interesting and fun mechanics to make for super unique games. Pac-Man 2 is probably the funniest and most charming game I've ever played. This game kinda reminds me of Frogger Beyond. They were trying to make Frogger relevant again by redesigning the character and trying to turn him into a sort of 3D platforming mascot. The level design was sort of Frogger's tile based movement but in a larger scale as you had to traverse through actual levels. The level design was surprisingly good, when ever it decided to not throw any gimmicks at you like riding a mine cart or snowboarding. And the boss fights were pretty tough considering you always died in one hit. The last boss especially lasted for way too long.
I hadn't heard any praise for the game before I decided to check it out, and I was genuinely surprised by the level of polish it had. Unfortunately all the games after it were kinda.. bad. They tried to expand on its ideas, but also ended up cutting corners on a lot of things, resulting with the game feeling a lot less polished. The whole story and overall attitude of the game wasn't exactly good in Beyond, but it still had that sort of Arcade feel to it. The games after it lost that as well.

I loved it with a burning passion when I was a kid, and even as an adult who is aware that it does have its frustrating moments (then again, even better/worse-received games than the Pac-Man World Series can have their annoying moments), I still love it to this day (of course, PMW2 is an improvement since it is both one of the greatest and most underrated games of all time, but PMW1 does come very close to the point where if I were to make a list of favourite games, I would likely put the home console versions on it someday to spite the people who dismissed them which lead to the downfall of (Bandai-)Namco)

That’s right, like factor5fanatic, I think he did a much fairer review on Pac-Man World 1 (PS1) than ExoParadigmGamer, Nitro Rad, CGRUndertow, Petronius, WatchMojo and Tehanakerer (for example. I mean, I get where they (with the exception of WatchMojo and CGRUT because of course they would want to do this underrated gem dirty!!!!) coming from, but that doesn’t mean I have to agree with most of the bad things they said about the game.). Hell, the former even acknowledged the existence of this review and gave PMW2 the love it deserves! Still waiting for him to do Remake or Rebreak or Xross Platform (Pac-Man has a lot of ports, tbh, especially the original game, and od course like Pac-Man World 1 (GBA), the Atari 2600 version of the original would get a Rebreak for the damage even one of my former favourite gaming franchise would have done to gaming from an objective standpoint) on more Pac-Man games.

  • @isetmfriendsofire
    @isetmfriendsofire 5 ปีที่แล้ว

I love how you look at games in a way to figure out purpose. You describe Pac-Man in a way I've never heard; and the draw was to manipulate the path of the ghosts to get the highest score possible. You're definitely somebody I'd trust when it comes to whether a game would suit me or not, because I find that as I get older, I am more aware of the fact that despite the imagery, I'm sitting in a chair and pushing buttons, so having more of a purpose within the game really helps me enjoy a game more.

    1. Redesign Pac-Man's hitbox to be smaller and more accurate.
    2. Slightly modernized level design.
    3. Increase enemy AI difficulty.
    4. Moveset is modernized and made similar for each game.
    5. Call it the "Re-PAC-aged Trilogy"

Considering how well made World's 1 and 2 were (even surpassing alot of the games in the previously mentioned mascots' series imo) I feel like there should've been a bigger push to get these games more in the public eye as they were way ahead of their time.

I mean it does get some attention but not that much as something like Mario 64. And most of the reviews I have seen (besides this one and another one.) have been less than stellar I would say. Especially CGR Undertow and Classic Game Room's because they didn't even talk about half the stuff King K did.(I know that's not their style but that's why i'm not a fan of their videos in the first place.)
I'm glad at least though King K talked about this gem of a game because it's barely talked about that much outside of maybe a cult status from certain fans like myself.

Having watched all your Pac-Man World retrospectives back to back (albeit out of order) I find it interesting what kinds of vibes I get from these games
PMW2's level designs had a very strong Rayman 2 vibe to it, while PMW1 to me just screams Pandemonium!.
I wonder if the Pac-Man games drew inspiration from those or not, given that both Rayman 2 and Pandemonium! precede both Pac-Man games by a few years

Couldn’t have said it better myself. You know why Pac-Man World 1 & 2 aren’t on lists of greatest video games and people seem to acknowledge Bubsy 3D and Superman 64 more even though they are the worst 3D platformers of the late 1990s/all time? Because they have no taste! They just love to sleep on masterpieces that they weren’t ready for just because they didn’t want to see something as memorably epic as Pac-Man and other characters in the franchise finally developing personality beyond a simple little arcade game (which, to be fair, the 1980s Pac-Man games do hold up very well, especially for second generation era standards which just goes to show that gaming in the 1970s is nothing compared to how it is nowadays, especially because the original PM is made for gaming to be more than just a “men’s club”)!

I feel like these early PS1 games were some of the last reverberations of the “Nintendo hard” games. Now, Pac-Man world isn’t hard in the exact same way but it does share one thing in common: the game feeling like it’s punking you.

I'd say the boss/world order's a pretty big fucking detriment and the idea of any sort of difficulty curve in this game being bullshit when the 2 hardest worlds are placed right at the very fucking beginning to stonewall off the rest of the game and mitigating whatever quality points it may have had. To this day I've never beaten King Galaxian without savestates, it's easily one of the worst shmup segments ever in a game, Anubis Rex is terrible only for the completely bullshit hit detection and unavoidable attacks but at least I managed to beat that, took me 20 fucking years, mind.

I was surprised that Pac-man Ghost Zone looked like it played very similarly to Bubsy 3D. I make this comparison because I see a similar way you move Pac-man. Bubsy and Pac-man move by walking back and forth, and spinning around to change direction in order to move in a 3D plane. I also see how the camera moves upward when you jump over a gap.

re-pac actually fixes nearly every critique you had.
for starters: every level now has a checklist of pac-man letters, galaga youve collected, keys it might have, and family members in the level.
second: metal powerups now respawn infinitely, fixing down the tubes
third: pac-man is given a flutter that can save you in a pinch
fourth, theres an easy mode for beginners that adds in a couple blocks as well as near infinite fluttering (it's not. it does run out, but it takes a long time)
fifth, the power pellet is buffed immensely: bottomless pits now have a cover while it's active, and it's completely invincible too. in addition to growing larger letting you smash stuff and go on a rampage.
sixth: the family members are optional: there are now two endings: don't save all the family members, and the original ending plays out (with the family members getting released anyway) save all the family members, and a new, much sweeter ending occurs instead.
re=pac is better in every way.

Also the bosses seem to be improved in many ways too! Whether they give players more leeway or just making things more interesting.
Swimming too has been improved on too, making Pacman swim a bit faster and given a more simple control layout

I will say, this is probably my 2nd favorite PS1 game I ever played. And in general my 2nd favorite Pacman game.(1st being Pacman Championship Edition DX. Man, that game to me is a perfect sequel to the original arcade game in every way IMO.) I think it was actually smart of the team to stick to a 2D horizontal perspective rather than go full fledged 3D like Mario 64.
Not to say Mario 64 and other 3D Platformers are bad of course not but the thing is that most of them aged in the 5th gen and it's noticable especially with Mario 64 with things like repeating music, simple geometry and kind of samey mission patterns. Though, since the team for this game picked a more so horizontal style for the camera I think this helps make Pacman World 1 not feel dated in the slightest. It can played today and I still think it would age extremely well.
And for that I commend the team for an excellent job on that in this regard. The music I will say also is again pretty damn solid. It's got a Pacman flavor to it and I mean that in the best way possible. And the space levels have my favorite music in the game because they're really amazing.(Especially the boss battle theme as it feels like a nice tribute to Galaga/Galaxian.)
In general this is an overall great game and i'm glad you made an in-depth review for this game considering the reviews I have seen of this gem were less than stellar usually.(*Cough Cough Classic Game Room*.) Keep up the great work man.:)

The major difference between Galaga and Galaxian is that Galaxian has enemies that come onto the screen in formations similar to Space Invaders, while Galaga has enemies that form a kind of snake or congo line that loops around the screen. Galaga is the direct sequel to Galaxian.

Well, a history correction about Pac-Man Ghost Zone from the creator of it, me... a.k.a. the lead game designer on CAPCOM's Maximo Ghost to Glory, lead gameplay designer of Abe's Oddysee and many other well-known and some game of the year products, such as Aladdin for the Sega Genesis, along with Cool Spot. Yes, we took the prototype to Japan for review and I was the one who presented the game to Namco CS R&D and VS R&D and both groups overwhelmingly loved the concept, although it was still way early in development. Yes, it's true the CEO got pissed and was going to kill the project, but not because of the play, it was because the game had NO Cinematics. (Something I knew was going to be an issue, for the CEO Nakamura, believe it or not, didn't like video games and only reviews products based on the in-game cinematics) I fought the President of Namco USA to get them in the game before the review, but he refused. None the less, when Nakamura said he was going to end the production the head of Namco R&D Japan tracked him down on a golf course and went to bat to continue the game's production. Sadly what really ended the production of the game was infighting between the current director of R&D and the directors on Namco USA. I was offered the directorship of Namco US R&D at a lunch not long after but turned it down to continue to focus on what I enjoyed game design. That's when they turned to Jesse Taylor for the position, who quickly moved to layoff anyone he didn't like. And I say layoff, for no one, was fired, it was called a studio restructuring. I was asked to reapply for a lower position at Namco, but I was done with the politics as just reapplied for the same job I had, knowing Jesse would never accept it and I could part Namco on my own terms. But all turned out for the best, for as soon as CAPCOM found out I was a free agent again they snatched me up to create Maximo Ghost to Glory for them.
