if you want the hull of a shipmodel to be sturdy this is the way to do it. In the beginning days of my wood modeling a pensioned professional modelmaker that worked at the Rotterdam Maritime Museum showed me the logicalness of doing this. I may not always do the whole hull but i wil allways strengten the bow and sternsection and pre sand the parts down before glueing them in place. Well done!!

I'm glad I read the description because I was confused at how much extra parts you were adding to a kit. I still don't really understand why it's necessary since kits usually just plank across the ribs, but you clearly know a lot more than I do about ship building so I trust the finish result will be fantastic, and that's what's important.
In this kit, the planks are in one layer (because part of the frame will be open on the right side) so to facilitate the process of laying them, it is better to make a perfectly flat surface at first! Also, over time, such a planking without filling the spaces over time is deformed under the influence of humidity and bends (dents appear) between the bulkheads...

Oh oh now I need a scroll saw! Did Model Shipways instruct filling the hull with solid wood? I did this on their Niagara, did not like the idea of complex single planking. Some day I need to finish that ship, it is actually a very hard kit, lots of real fabrication.
This is a similar technique as in most of their kits. And the same single planking. But I will use hard wood and bending the planks with a soldering iron directly on the hull, so I definitely need to fill the spaces...
Hello Olha. I am very impressed with your work. You are my inspiration! A question: what size of wood blocks did you buy to make the filling pieces between bulkheads, and where did you get it? Thank you in advance
Olha, Thanks for explaining why the fill in between all your bulkheads! I am building the Artetestiana Latina Bluenose as my first wood ship model and I wondered why I needed a second layer of planking. Is there a Top Hamper to the USS Confederacy? Or is it just a Hull Model?
This model is with single-layer planking. So when filling the spaces, the main goal is to prepare the perfect surface for planking. But I also increase the gluing area, simplify the marking for the planks, have the ability to bend the planks directly on the hull with a soldering iron and nail (or clamp) where I need to and not just on the frames...
To think back in the wooden ship building days these were made completely by hand, no power tools, and no laser cut parts. I know I would not want to do it that way, tough enough even WITH power tools. I can never seem to get past the hull into planking. I have only one hull fully planked, and it looks like crap. Started a Victory and got to the planking stage and of course messed up the lines for the setting planks. The only one I have built that actually is looking good is a Dumas Chris Craft, i'll leave doing the classics to those who can build. Amazing work here .
Thank you very much! I know that feeling with planking! On my VICTORY, I probably tore off the planks three times and started over, oh no - I finished her first planking on the 4th try! So with that hull, the iron was my best friend))) And probably a whole bottle of PVA was spent there!
@@OlhaBatchvarov I made the mistake of using CA. No going back with that unless I soak the whole thing in Acetone. :( Live and learn, they are nothing like building an RC airplane. LOL
Very good! I understand why. But I’ve never fully filled a hull prior to planking. I do see several advantages to planking a basically solid hull. Your videos are great. Aloha Ohla! You've got mad skills working with the wood blocks and shaping and cutting tools. Awesome job, seriously, However I do have one question as to why you wouldn't have wanted to use Bass sheets instead of the blocks? Seems like you went above and beyond in composing the sections, shaping and cutting and then giving everything that final blending. Don't get me wrong, and again, GREAT JOB, but I wonder if maybe your life wudda been a bit easier should you have used the 1/8" ( sorry don't know the metric ) sheets instead? Last question, for now, is how long did it take you to get to this point overall???? Again, love the job you did, and curious to the difference of technique install. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2022!!! Be well, and hope to catch more of what you do. :) Your virtual fan, SammyC ;) ;)
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too! I found only such blocks. And it's hard to say how long - because I was running out of wood all the time. So there are 4 months between releases but I think it is possible to do this amount in 2 weeks!
Wonderful job. I've enjoyed all your videos. Your skill as a shipwright is amazing. Have you ever tried dry wall compound to fill low spots on the hull? Sands so much easier than Bondo.
Thank you very much! This putty is the most suitable of all that I have tried. And I'm sure with it that my layer of boards will not come off the hull together with the putty.
Great build. I have a question. Why did you make a "solid " hull as opposed to frame and plank? I understand it would be more solid ( and heavy), but did the blocks really make it easier to cover?
Thank you very much! There are many advantages to this! The most important thing is that it will make the planking process 10 times easier. You can bend the planks with a soldering iron right on the hull and also nail the clamps where you need! Secondly, you will get a perfectly flat surface and it will not deform over time (usually after a few years the location of the bulkheads and the concavities between them become visible).
At the moment, I'm cutting the planks for this ship, as I'm going to replace those that come from the basswood in the KIT with the precious wood. And when I make the planking, I will publish the next video - it's a big model and takes a lot of time...
There are so many benefits! More importantly, the hull will not twist over time. Especially such a long model. Second, it will be much easier (10 times) for you to arrange planking. Especially when it is only 1 layer of planks. In addition, you have a larger area for gluing the strips, you can hammer nails with clamps anywhere or bend the planks directly on the hull with a soldering iron...
Another great video! I was wondering why the saw blade on your table saw appears to be offset on the arbor? It looked a little scary when you turned the saw off and the blade rotation became easy to see.
@@OlhaBatchvarov Like Capt. RD, I think the blade on your circular saw isn't mounted correctly. It appears to not be seated properly on the shaft and is off centre - it could come loose, which would be very dangerous. You should also find it cuts a lot better when it is seated correctly, too. If this is how the saw was when you received it, then it wasn't set p correctly at the factory. Your videos and your ship builds are magnificent!
In that I am building a British warship similar to yours, (and from scratch to a large extent), I am to the point where I am going to follow your example and fill the spaces. I am using your approach. I really appreciate watching how you did this.

This not only facilitates the planking process, but also prevents deformation of the planks from changes in humidity, especially on such a large hull. This is a very boring job, but if you do not do it you will always regret just looking at the model. Now I live in a very humid climate and can see on my two models, that even for small hulls in this area I need to completely fill the space!
Very nice , what is the brand and model of your table saw ?
Thank you!
This is 4'' Table Saw - Byrnes Model Machines
I will put a link in the next comment on the video about it, if TH-cam does not block. There is a seller in the description under the video!

@@OlhaBatchvarov thank you , it look a very good saw
Красота!!!!
Спасибо!
Ай молодца!
Спасибо!
Have you ever built any steam sloops like the USS Kearsarge or the CSS Alabama.
Not yet)))) but I really like Alabama!
Thx for your reply Olha. No matter what, GREAT job. Will be looking for more. Hugz and best wishes always. Yours SammyC
Good to see a female ship builder in the Modelling community
Thank you!
Buen trabajo
Thank you very much!
How often do you post and where are you going to work on the confederacy again?
At the moment, I'm cutting the planks for this ship, as I'm going to replace those that come from the basswood in the KIT with the precious wood. And when I make the planking, I will publish the next video - it's a big model and takes a lot of time...
Why are you adding wooden blocks between the bulkheads?
There are so many benefits!
More importantly, the hull will not twist over time. Especially such a long model.
Second, it will be much easier (10 times) for you to arrange planking. Especially when it is only 1 layer of planks.
In addition, you have a larger area for gluing the strips, you can hammer nails with clamps anywhere or bend the planks directly on the hull with a soldering iron...
Another great video! I was wondering why the saw blade on your table saw appears to be offset on the arbor? It looked a little scary when you turned the saw off and the blade rotation became easy to see.
Thank you very much!
It was created by the manufacturer - I'm used to this location!
