  • Every year we team up with The Rocky Mountain Goat Alliance to give away a mountain goat hunt to a hunter who has yet to harvest a goat. A couple years ago, guide Dan Watson took two hunters on one of these hunts and it was one for the books.
    Special thanks to Talus Creative (www.taluscreative.com) for the footage.

    Excellent work, especially getting one with the bow. Got my first goat this year, solo, gos, in BC, only a few hours from home. Indescribably awesome experience 10/10 recommend

    Dumb question being that I've never hunted, What do the mountain goat eat since there's nothing to eat up there. Do they come down to eat?

    • @backcountrybcandbeyond
      @backcountrybcandbeyond  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No dumb questions here. There’s actually plenty for them to eat up there. They mostly eat lichens, grasses and low growing shrubs.

      Most places a Billy is recommended but not required. Being a Covid year with a lot less clients going out and harvesting animals, maybe they made the choice to harvest one knowing the herd wont be seeing nearly as much pressure as usual? Im sure they made an educated decision.

      @@tjmuhl4512 Yes i am aware of the regs, less hunters should equal more opportunities at billies. but legal is legal i guess

      I thought the same thing. I pay money to these societies and read continual posts about only shooting billies. But I guess its ok if its for social media footage. Thats the world we live in these days.

      @@tjmuhl4512 realistically though, the only reason killing nannies isn't illegal is because of the difficulty in distinguishing between billies and nannies. The management solution to the death of nannies is often to simply close the management unit to goat hunting, period. There are several regions in BC where tags are issued along with a note requesting that hunters target a billy because killing a nanny will result in population losses that the region can't support and lead to closure. Just because it is legal doesn't make it right. Hunters are supposed to be conservationist, first and foremost - it's about time we all (guides and hunters alike) get back to normalizing that.

    Having gone after goats with a bow my hat is of to anyone who can get into bow range. Just getting into goat country is a feat. Although it is legal to shoot nannies, its not good for the herd. Better to use a gun and be selective than to just shoot a nanny cause that’s what was in bow range. Congratulations on pulling it off.

      Looks like a Savage rifle. I was a young hunter many decades ago and an old timer told me you get what you pay for. Rings true today as it did nearly 50 years ago. I've never had a Weatherby do that in the field or on the bench.
