As of today, they are 41.3% complete and estimate they'll be done in 2030. They already have the boiler and cab done so it's looking like the project will be successful.
they have an entire tender already ,and they have started work on the frame, it wont be built as a single piece. its a whole bunch of pieces because obviously its way to hard to make a single cast now.
@@jimmythatguy thats one reason yes, but the primary reason for the split frame is so it can traverse curves better. That long of a rigid frame causes a lot of stress on the metal, having a bigger chance on cracks in the frame. Wich is a death sentence for the loco if not found early.
Excellent video nice to hear about this
People said it would take a decade to restore the 3985 if she was done under Union Pacific and she’s already close to the point of getting her boiler sandblasted. I get the facts about rebuilding this kind of locomotive heck I bet it probably would be the same way if a brand new big boy was to be rebuilt from scratch except the build an engine like that would probably take all the way to 2040. It’s still gonna be great to see one of the toughest streamliners return again
The project will be completed and fail. Why? Because to build a locomotive lacks the expertise to do that today. So if the reach to build it the mostly will have all the baby problems with it that was on solvable with experience but that experience is lost because death of the people with knowledge.
England did the same thing when they rebuild a member of the then extinct A1 peppercorn class and gave it the name "Tornado"
And the same folks are doing it again and have a third project to begin once the P2 is complete. I think it's safe to say that the T1 Trust were definitely inspired by Tornado.
Also in the process of building a 3rd one ontop of Tornado and Prine of Wales
Planet, the later replica of rocket, the replica iron duke... the idea was already old hat by the time tornado even started frankly. They just made a bigger faster replica.
The history of replicas of lost locos goes like 3/4 of the history of locomotives. 😂 pretty much the second someone scrapped one to begin with someone else was thinking and doing the replica thing.
*rebuilt
@@THE_flushingtoilet *built, tornado isn't actually an A1, nor is it a replca really, the whole thing is completely different spec to any A1 the LNER built. Not least because the LNER had it's own set of lost or unknown metallurgical standards for materials used that were not replicated in Tornado, instead modern readily available material specifications were evaluated and used. Also the construction methods diverge significantly in places as their are now cheaper and easier to work with alternatives(welding over riveting)
Honestly it kind of pointless to breaking the world steam record now of all times, Let Mallard Have Her Crown!
Thing is, she might've never had it
Well, many people (American and even British) do not believe that Mallard deserved that crown, due to the circumstances of the test. Test track's all wrong (being downhill) and Mallard sustaining damage after the speed run. In their POV, a proper high speed record run is something similar to a rail version of a Bonneville Salt Flats speed run: straight level track, and two runs for the fastest average speed. And with the most precise measuring equipment, of course.
This will be fantastic. They should also build a MIlW Hudson while they’re at it.
How about we let the T1 Trust enjoy running 5550 after construction is completed? Someone else should step up and start a campaign to build another locomotive from the ground up themselves. Will it be you? 🧐
Mallard needs to watch out
They are a Amazing Group !😊
What, no S1? Just kidding. This is gonna be amazing. I hope they get it done!
I CANT WAIT FOR THIS TO BE FINNISHED!!!
Fred dibnah would be proud 👏
My favorite train
I can't wait to see the Pennsylvania Railroad T1 No. 5550!
Yeeeeeeehhhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaa
Great now make a triplex
Great, now you start a group to build one yourself. Well, we’re waiting…
We really need to bring back steam power
YES STEAM TRAINS ARE KING/QUEEN
Best video as always
Oh yeah❤
Im glad to see a new member of the t1 class of locomotives, but the record breaking plans seem a bit silly, a lot of people claim mallard would be a contender, but as a new build i think its best to compare it to tornado more than mallard, since both t1 and tornado are new builds
Would you look at that rotary cam poppet valve system
@@easydoesit8857 yeah it looks cool and functional i guess
Tornado is an amazing story, which I followed for years before it finally steamed. T1 PRR5550 will easily surpass Tornado's 100+mph record.
We will have to wait and see what happens.
@@easydoesit8857 Franklin Type B Rotary = good ------The T1 class came with Franklin Type A Oscillating = a maintenance nightmare.
@@psycotria no doubt it will pass it, Im sure of it, but it seems a bit petty to just bring a new build to life to just "beat mallards speed record", we aint in the days of steam anymore, thats why tornado is a more up to date contender
T 1 e uma locomotiva emocionante , magnífica,sensacional .
It's unfortunate that it wasn't the most attractive steam locomotive. There's any number of others that could/should have been brought back that were.
Should have tried building a new NYC Niagara..
They plan to break that speed record, but they won't because the FRA won't let them. Neither will the railroads who own the trackage.
Again, how about you start a group to build a Niagara locomotive from the ground up yourself? Also, you’re wrong with the second part because it will do high speed testing on the test loop in Pueblo, CO
If fiction is to be exact, the 210 mile an hour speed of the 900-mile long Diesel Driven mobile Fortress called the MK-1006 Mobile Fortress, the T1 trust just can't beat it
There’s also steam condensation in the right conditions.
YAAA I TELL YE LADS STEAM WILL RISE AGAIN THE OILY BUCKETS OF METAL WILL FALL FOR THE GLORY OF THE STEAM POWER
Diesel is more reliable and more efficient
@@THE_flushingtoiletDiesels were not more reliable until way later
@@ARG0T when the T1 was built diesels had already advanced pretty far.
Amtrak needs some T1s then
Loco: 120mph
Rail joints entered the chat
Rail joints arent much of a thing anymore. Most modern track is continuous welded rail, no joints
First clip looks real
Maybe Amtrak might offer its Northeast Corridor for a high speed run.
The FRA test loop in Pueblo, CO is where the 5550 will go for high speed testing.
Meanwhile, California has been building a high-speed train for 30 years that doesn't exist.
ITS THE PRRS1 WOOOOKOOOOOOO
Has anyone looked into the ACE 3000?
well the s1 was said to go at 140 mph but the t1 was said to go at 130 mph
Bullshit.
You yanks could never beat us brits. Not a chance you ever got to 140 mph must of been a faulty speedo
Was said to but never actually did, there is no proof! Just fisherman’s tales
Actually the S1 was said to 152mph, and the federal government found that credible enough to fine the PRR for it. Irregardless the T1 was in fact foretold to do 140.
but they never did
So your saying its theoretically faster then mallard, who currently holds the record for fastest steam locomotive?
Not just theoretically. Many steam engines were much faster than the A4 class, there has was just no interest in an official record during their service life.
can we get them to build a Billington E2, for all the Thomas fans out there???
Have fun with the terrible brakes, the extreme difficulty of going around curves, and stopping for water every 5 seconds because the tanks are that small.
@@cdangelo1843 no one's building steam engines for practical use. They are all show pieces. It's kind of obvious.
Wasn't the T1 plagued with wheel slip issues
Only the prototypes were the slippery ones.
Why not bring back the idea of atomic trains? Imagine this steam train on atomic fuel.
Is it going to burn coal because a natural gas fired unit would be much easier to start up and cheaper to run.
Wait a minute, it was a steam locomotive without steam and with cardan shafts?
140 mph?? The record for steam was 126 mph set by Mallard in the UK
Tornado, but make it American 🇺🇸
"140mph" no proof, you don't get the record. Mallard still holds it
Some records are not ment to be broken but to stand as a mighty achievement for the time. Some things should be left alone.
😂😂😂 This locomotive is going to do high speed testing in Pueblo regardless of your opinion.
I want a seat 😮😮😮😮😮😢❤❤❤😊
Build the GG1 instead...
Man if they break the steam speed record you can bet the uk will do everything to get that record back
They don’t have any engines capable of doing so, and their loading gauge is too restrictive to get much faster than mallard did on her special train…
@@CaptainCrutchidk if hs2 gets complete we have a hole line only question is will steam be allowed to use it one off
@@CaptainCrutchalso uk rail infrastructure can hold up to 140mph east coast , HS1 and the Chatham main line to name a few but the east coast is limited to 125 and HS2 could go at 225 so wouldn’t be so sure on that the question is an engine not the track
Me personally i think that an engine built with modern technology shouldn’t have access to the record yes its the same design but it will be built perfectly no imperfections which just didn’t happen in the 30s and 40s still the record is there for the taking all the same I believe they would hold a special event with mallard and t1 in like york or somewhere in the states so people could see the old record holder with the new
@@Thatspuremental Nah, manufacturing technology is always changing. If we're going to make that argument, how was it fair for a locomotive in the 1930s to compare to ones in the 1800's? If it's being built to the general T1 specs, seems fair play to me.
Ppssfftt...Freight Train Engineer here...our Units could reach 140mph too....if they fell out of a plane.😅
:-D
Technically any thing can reach that speed
Just once
@@conductorcammon only geared for 70 mph …
An engine like the T1 is definitely no joke when it comes back I’m actually hoping they give it a full throttle run or at least a fun first highball. And if this engine does succeed we could be looking at the return and possibly even more of America’s best streamliners or passenger locomotives.
Like say, the NYC Hudson...
I was gonna say that!
Imagine the T1 and a Dreyfuss Hudson doubleheading together!
@@atshinkansen7439 if a new preservation trust ever comes forward to build a J3A from scratch, i’m definitely gonna ride with it then but also that would be amazing to see
@@atshinkansen7439 actually, I am imagining #5550 and #611 doubleheading, due to Norfolk and Western's association with the Pennsy (until the 1960's).
It would be awesome to see the official record for steam traction broken! The Brits have had it sat at 126 MPH for far too long. And we railfans know that even back in the day engines like T1, J Class, F7, and Hudsons were probably capable of breaking that. But it was never a matter of official record
I hope that they will be sucsessful!
I’ve been donating since they first started $150 a year, I feel great about this project because my grandpa drove pennsy steam back in the day. Hopefully I get to see it before I pass on.

No he did not !!!!
In theory, the reopening of the CutOff will hopefully happen by 2030. So, theres a possibility that since those lines would be NJT and State of Pennsylvania owned, we could see a T1 on that long straight stretch of track.
I wish they could make steam trains worth while again. I'd love to see a steamer on my local railroad.

On the bright side the museum in York will have to restore mallard again to try to get back the speed record 😂
Hey! Leave Mallard alone! The museum needs a door wedge!
@@LancashireAndYorkshireyea i mean come on cant you jst use stephens rocket or something
Yeah, I hate to be that guy, but that wouldn't work even if they tried. Considering Mallard was the only one to do said record only once on a downhill grade, I don't think given it's age it's gonna be able to even if given the chance. At least with 5550 it's going to be brand new. Mallard is a product of the 1930s, making it 85 in 2023

I hadn't heard of this project. I wish them every success.
With the Way class I CEOs are acting, itll be a miracle for 5550 to be allowed on a mainline track
As a pennsylvanian rail fan, it makes me so happy seeing such a beast from our rail line being brough back to life
As a member of the founders club and sponsor of two wheel sections, I highly approve this video.
That’s awesome! Steam is way more powerful than diesel!

I think that someone should start a group similar to this where the goal is to build a example of a New York Central Hudson
Even you can start a group to build a NYC Hudson from the ground up.
Its funny cause like the PRR T1, theirs also a hudson tender at scranton.
And in theory you COULD use parts from a Canadian hudson, unless there is differences im forgetting about
where will it run? ns doesnt even let the nkp run on its tracks anymore.
The newly built Pennsy T1 5550 will run on short lines and tourist railroads. Multiple short lines and tourist railroads have invited the T1 Trust to operate 5550 on their tracks for excursions and other events.
@@TranscontinentalRailfan the only problem is that the T1 is a monster. No operating steam locomotive on the mid-to east coast are a similar size to it. And don’t forget the operating costs.
@@gamerfan8445 The T1 Trust has said anywhere N&W 611 or NKP 765 can go, the 5550 will be able to go too. It could even operate at Strasburg, PA. It’s a lot more economically feasible to operate mainline steam locomotives on short lines and tourist railroads, rather than class one railroad mainlines. By the time you lease passenger cars, pay for the insurance the class ones require, and the operating costs and there is no money left over, you are looking at least $2k per train ticket. Where as for 611 at Strasburg, people were only paying $30 on average per ticket to ride behind 611. It makes better business sense to go to short lines or tourist railroads. This new locomotive will operate just fine on short lines and tourist railroads and there is nothing wrong with that.
AND WE'RE DOING IT AGAIN! We're currently building a new P2 class locomotive!
There's no shortage of rails for the T1. By the time it's complete, NS will have new mgmt.
The speed record will fall on a closed FRA test track.
It's crazy to think that a new steam locomotive is being built in 2023
Actually, this has been going on for quite a few years already...
Do they still require shovelling coal or is there a new way to heat the boiler?
Fkn cool either way I would love to see these all the time.
it could be an oil burner but i don't know
It will be an oil burner. Even if it was still a coal burner there would be little shoveling as engines this size had “mechanical stokers” which allowed coal to be fed into the firebox with just the turn of a valve.
@@welshtrainspottingchannel While the T1 Trust wanted to burn coal in the Belpaire firebox, logistics and ash disposal makes oil the easy choice.
@@psycotria It does help that oil burners are generally much more fuel efficient by comparison, too - and they can run on damn near anything liquid and hydrocarbon. Diesel, refined fry oil waste, yadda yadda. All works.
Imagine if we have a T1 next to a big boy, that would be awesome
it would be possible because we have a big boy here in PA at Steam Town
@@andrewward1887 I have been seeing a number of videos of the legendary Big Boy #4014, as of late. That Big Boy has been touring the Midwest/Midsouth since this summer .
I love the fact they're doing this and hope like hell we get to see a new T1 running on her own steam. That said, if they can build a dang T1 from scratch, why the hell can't they rebuild a GG1 to working order? Updated electrical equipment to meet modern standards & run on the same system as Amtrak, but the same quill drive system. If they can cast a new chassis & drivers for the T1, surely someone can recast the frames & bogeys for the GG1 since the old ones have too many weld repairs from cracking from 50 yrs of service. I understand why it hasn't been done as of yet (money, lack of infrastructure, etc), but you cant tell me its impossible when you got an amazing group of folks building a T1 from the ground up..
I would love to see steam come back to Australia one day.

Best of luck to them! A bunch of guys in the UK built a Peppercorn loco from scratch and, dubbed “Tornado”, runs special / enthusiast runs all over the UK. They’re now building a P2, also from scratch.
Great but a replica of the NYC Dreyfuss-designed streamlined Hudson should be built 1st.
Okay, so when are YOU going to start building one?
Agreed but seeing as the T1 is a decent bit of the way done, let’s finish it first and then do the J3a next!
ah yes. one of the original streamlined titans of the 30s.
5550 is excited to be steamed.
ill actually be more than old enough to go there on my own by the time this is done
TRAINS
This could be life changing especially helping reduce fossil fuel use if we would use steam in mass, if only if, solar panels and windmills on all unused surfaces a battery car and an electric boiler and a steam trap to reuse the water funneled off. Steam was the past but also could save the future if used wisely in conjunction with other earth friendly power sources.
This class was a one of a kind. It was a 4-4-4-4, with 2 sets of 4 drivers. It has confirmed 140 MPH runs by PRR, never confirmed by anyone else. Sout wax lowered to a confirmed 120
What an art deco beauty
Hope they get it running, it would be cool to see it in Harrisburg on the Keystone line. I’d make that trip to see it

I hope it gets built but there's no where that will allow them to try and break the speed records and if I remember correctly this engine had wheel slip issues so I don't think it'll even be fast enough to do so.
The prototypes didn't have wheel slip issues, plus the trust will rectify the wheel slip when it's built
The same test track that was used to test the top speed of the Acelas would be used to push this thing up to top speed
I read that from an engineering perspective, nothing over a speed of 127 is technically possible. And I think 122 was about the maximum achievable

I can definitely see where you are coming from, but at the same time I think your point isn’t 100% valid.
Sure, records are meant to be broken, but only if they are still relevant in any way, like, well basketball.
Steam engines, in the other hand, haven’t been relevant on proper transport since the early 70s at the very most, braking the record now, with modern technology, something which mallard, Scotsman, or any previous record steam engine did not have.
I’m not gonna say I hate the T1 trust, bc I don’t, it’s really cool that the building new steam engine idea has finally made its way over to the us in a mainline scale, but at the same time, braking a record that literally makes no sense at this point in time, it’s a we bit silly and petty

"... Steam engines, in the other hand, haven’t been relevant on proper transport since the early 70s at the very most, ..."
This statement shows how ignorant about steam traction you actually are. You likely are based in the UK, which dropped steam in 1968. Did you know that China built main line steam locomotives into the mid 1990s? They still provide maintenance and will build new steam locomotives on request.
Iowa Interstate Railroad bought a pair of the QJ Class 2-10-2, fresh out of overhaul, from China in 2008. Within a year, IAI set the world record for steam-hauled revenue freight in the 21st Century, which has since been broken, I think.
The post-steam era (1959) record revenue freight in the US was ~132 double stack containers pulled by 4-6-6-4 UP 3985 without helpers in 1993. Find the video here on YT, UP Challenger charges Hill 1993.

It looks like you hate the larger loading gauge of US railroads, and the absolutely gigantic, 1MM lbs of the 4-4-4-4 Class T1 PRR 5550, which could take the Mallard, loaded onto a flatcar and break its 126 mph record with it IN TOW, just for the Lols.
