Solar watches, as their name suggests, capture, store, and transform light energy into electrical energy. The dial or the top of the case of the earliest solar-powered models both had fully exposed solar cells that faced the sun. The Synchronar 2100 chose the latter and mounted the solar cells above the watch's casing, giving it a futuristic appearance. To achieve the same results today, a solar cell is positioned just beneath the dial. The solar cell converts light into electrical energy, which is subsequently transmitted to a rechargeable battery and stored there. Despite its name, solar cells are capable of collecting light from artificial light sources as well, albeit more slowly. Here are a few of our personal favorites.
