Aye. Back in the day, they did the filming on the actual locations. Then, they switched to shooting in Toronto for any big US city. Today? Mostly green screen. Rubbish...
The only even slightly interesting part of this game is the quite clever scrolling routine on the Speccy version that scrolls alternate lines on each frame giving an illusion that it's smoother than it really is. Just about the only element with any attention to detail that I can detect!
Well, the digitized title screens on the Amiga and ST versions look nice? Thanks for slogging through this for another BOtP, Mark. Took one for the team this week!
I remember getting this on tape for my C64 and being utterly disgusted. Think I loaded it 2 or 3 times, on the latter occasions asking "surely it wasn't that bad?" and quickly answering that question.
I was already in my early teens in 1989 and yet I never knew until tonight that Red Heat got a computer game, probably because it wasn't released on MS-DOS or on consoles. I think the letterbox cropping and only showing the character from the waist up looks cool, at the very least. The background art is also decent (at least on the Amiga and Atari ST).
We played the Amiga version, when it came out and thought it was mint - I was about 9 and it was only about the graphics, especially as at the time I think I only had a C16 at home! Then again I think we only got just past the hot rock bit and moved on - my mates dad used to come home, seemingly every weekend, with a disk tray full of the latest games so we rarely played any of them for long!
For Amiga games, I wonder if anyone has ever thought about/implemented something in an emulator to make two instances of the same game run at the same time so you can have both sound effects and music. Seems like it wouldn't be *too* hard given how powerful modern PCs are.
It looks like Someone discovered they can draw a character that resembles a real person enough to be impressive in a still screen shot- then tries to make a game out of it.
I remember playing this on the Amiga. The only saving grace was the music which also quickly becomes repetitive. What is surprising is that Special FX could actually make good ports when they wanted too, like Midnight Resistence.
Ocean really didn't want to let US Gold take the crown of worst publisher without a fight. I think they did it, their film licences helped Ocean reach fetid depths of the cess pit that US Gold couldn't dream of reaching.
and then they added film perforations to the C64 play area to double down on the cinematic gimmick and save ene more resources. The eurodevelopers art of never filling the screen.
Vinny (Vinesauce) played the Amiga version of Red Heat months ago; he complained about the game relying on holding the single joystick button for every attack move. If he only knew the 8-bit ports are worse than the original...
Hey Mark, I noticed you don't have a playlist for the early RC stuff. I just burnt the first 32 eps plus the SS and Saturn specials that I downloaded 20+ years ago to a disc for posterity and to make some room on my HDD. Just wanted to make sure you hadn't lost them or anything.
Err, there should be a play list for them. I'll have to look to that. Thanks for the heads up. I do have all the early shows backed up on DVDs myself so I they're not online I can always add them again.
@@RetroCore I scrolled through all your vids here and did find them so you shouldn't need to reupload. Just need to make a playlist for season 1 and 2 :)
It's a misfortune to learn that this game was one of the worst Joffa Smith has ever designed. This guy made remarkable games for the ZX Spectrum, such as Green Beret, Cobra, or Firefly, my favorite. This is a case of somebody who hadn't had the same inspiration while transitioning from 8 to 16-bits. I don't know if he was responsible for the 8-bit converts, but the original Amiga and Atari ST ones are, definitely, abismal!
Love the movie, but not the games for me Mark. I think I wasn't interested on all versions and thought I'll pass on them bro. But great viewi for sure and as always brother man. 8^) Anthony...
I remember fishing the amiga budget re-release out of a bargain bin in Future Zone as a kid. What a terrible game. Only entertainment was chuckling at that talking John Belushi head :D Why on earth did Ocean always create a bunch of mini-games to stick to the plot of a movie, rather than just make a platform game, like what console versions were doing? And one level was always either that bloody sliding puzzle thing, or a rip off of Mastermind. I don't think it was until The Addams Family movie game that Ocean finally twigged on the concept. and even then they went back to mini game nonsense with Their Untouchables port.
Probably the thought process was: a collection of mini games could represent key scenes AND give "more value for money". Too bad when they're no fun to play though.
Cool. 😎👏 I do Remember seeing this game of the movie reviewed BITD in C&VG and the like gettting Quite liked the movie despite Arnies German-come-russian accent 😂.
At least Arnold really looks like Arnold in the 16 bit versions, unlike the home computer versions of T2,total recall and last action hero. It's still a crap game but props to the sprite artists at least.
Special FX were capable of far more than this, far, far more. The ST version lost what little atmosphere there was on the Amiga version, with tinny and hissy AY sound. The C64 version has some lovely music but that's all it has going for it.
IMO - Amiga, More colour in static screens and better colour in game due to larger palette than the ST. ZX Spectrum version has better sound (in 128k version, not shown) because it uses the beeper as a drum track where the CPC version can't. ZX version is smoother scrolling but has weird scrolling bug, but the addition of basic colour in the CPC looks nicer. C64 is ass
The game play is more like an interactive intro. Sad that c64 was the worst, but the game is crap overall so not a major loss, you've got to love those random 80s/90s action movie tie in's though, certainly a thing of the past.
I had almost all Amiga games and never heard of this until today... and yes I remember going to the movies to see this crappy movie. Also 5 to 10 fps were more than enough on these games.
I remember playing this on my buddy's Amiga 500 back in the day. The gameplay wasn't anything special but I was impressed by the graphics with detailed big sprites.
Oh my, I am so glad I didn't get this as a kid. I had an Amiga and growing up in the 90s, loved action films. I think the real reason that you only see the top half of the play area is because everyone is walking on an airport travelator. Also is it me or is the sauna scene the most gay non-gay thing ever? I think the concept was good but the execution is poor, like a worse Cinemaware game heh. Ben-Hur was super wide like that but it was a rarity, they're clearly taking the easy route of very little height raster. Nice to see some homebrew for C64 & Amiga proving it was BS.😉 Lol the rock crushing stage, in the movie it was more an endurance of heat/pain since his cover story was that of a forge worker. CPC getting the typical lazy ZX port, sad since visually it can surpass C64 in the right hands.
To be fair, some of the programmers of this era were in their late teens and at the bottom of the ladder of whichever software company they were at.
