    Private Games in Los Angeles in my 35 year history of playing are FILLED with negative stories about cheating, follow home robberies, colluding, marked cards, etc.... The last time I played a private game was in 2005 when I was robbed of my $20K profit PLUS my original $10K after a Chatsworth California private game. It was a Set up and I learned my lesson.

    If there's money involved, people are going to try to find ways to cheat you out of it. When you consider people these days will cheat just to get on the leaderboard of a free online game, adding money on fuels the incentive.
    We had a couple of guys marking cards in Tampa and everyone excused their winning in odd spots as them just playing wild and crazy. The room manager even told me they used a burn card, how could these guys possibly know the runouts?
    Well, they were marking the outside edges of the cards based on the values of the cards. And one of them always sat in seat 1 so he could see the side of the deck and know if it favored low, middle or high cards and they'd play accordingly (this was in PLO, not hold em)

    I think it was David Blain on Rogan that said there were certain card games where the cheaters would replace all the decks at local gas stations with marked cards. So unwittingly an innocent player would go to one of these gas stations, buy a "clean" deck and introduce the poisoned marked deck into the game thus aiding the cheater.

    While I agree a high stakes private game if these aren’t your buddies from high school is always at risk, you still have to watch out for collusion at card rooms. There are several ways that even as few as three guys playing together can really change the outcome over a several hour session. Just having a partner or two run up pots where it makes your implied pot odds out of wack can really change your night. A partner who signals that they had the case Ace or king could be really important information. And it’s hard to argue against a playing with players who know each other. Hell, that’s often half the fun at a table.

    • @Red4350
      @Red4350 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      maybe the fish want to prove that they can hang on that higher level, or they've put in money for lessons or tutors. Some ppl are just rich and they love that atmosphere...or sometimes the dynamic of beating someone skill lvl's above you is tempting ...like so many normal ppl tried to beat Mj in a 1v1 basketball game...some ppl like playing with their idols...heck alot of regular basketball players tried to beat Brian Scalabrene if you know who that is in a 1v1, he was a role player and they though because he was on the bottom of the barrell in the NBA that they could easily beat him ...and boy thats a funny video to watch sometimes "im closer to Lebron than you are to me" xD
      ig since poker does involve putting in your own money you'd think why would ppl throw it away, but ppl that have money like that to throw away choose to take the chance, just like playing slots or scratch offs lol...yk you'll prob lose but what if or why not...its exciting...i mean shit buying yachts and mansions gets boring after a while i guess...why not play poker vs some pros

    I have not played a single home game in Austin in 12 yrs living here. But i have several friends who ran home games. One from the lodge, Berney Miller (rip) an old timer you have heard stories of, he used to run the home games before the lodge existed told me some stories of what they did to cheaters back in the wild west. Too bad he had to fall off that damn ladder. I miss seeing him show up to the lodge with 2 hot strippers having them 3b shove on everyone. Rip 🙏

    I'm still shocked how the poker community was let down by the J4 hand. With all this time that has past, looking back it's obvious what happened. She didn't know his hand but she knew she had the best hand by a signal, hence the impossible call, and too novice a player to know not to call given what it would look like, hence the return of chips after the call was made. And let's just follow that up with a criminal working for HCL with access to hole cards on that night taking money off her and only her stack. And the poker community gave her an AWARD lol..

    Doug I run a rake free game in NY with a group for over 20 years. We have experienced players cheating from time to time but it’s very rare. It’s unfortunate and disappointing but for the most part with known friends it’s rare. As a host I find it incumbent upon me to have full disclosure on what cards Im using and who the dealer is (which is the same dealer that everyone knows and trusts). Why a player would suggest brining his own cards to a game is suspicious in itself. Huge red flag. At the end of the day, the players need to trust the game runner or card room. That is the ultimate defender cheating. What are some of the most critical things a private home game can do to prevent cheating?

    So back in the mid 90s I drove a Taxi in the Oklahoma City area. One of my rides ended up becoming a regular client. He was a rounder in the underground high stakes poker scene here in Oklahoma and North Texas. I went to a couple of the games he played. This is middle 90s, they had a quarter million on the table, and a couple of guys working the room with nickel plated 357s. This is how cheating was dealt with then. You cheat, you die. Times have changed.

    An early warning in this saga that Mars was culpable is when he tried to character assassinate Wesley instead of defending himself. Attempting to discredit your accuser is not the behavior of an innocent person, it is the behavior of someone who is trying to deflect an accusation.

    • @nickmcginley4570
      @nickmcginley4570 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Disagree.
      Trying to decide who did what by whether they behave as someone else might expect them too, is not objective or verifiable or even logical.
      This is like convicting someone of a crime because they were not sufficiently distraught afterwards, for example.
      It is impossible to find out of someone stole something by asking them if they are a thief, and then trying to parse their reaction to being accused.

    • @rbaddict2947
      @rbaddict2947 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think we should be objective about all evidence and not be quick to make assumptions based on reactions. People defended themselves in different ways. It's very possible Mars is guilty but I don't think "him attempting to discredit Wesley through character assassination" is the smoking gun. Realize Wesley is attempting to character assassinate him also.

    He admitted the deck was marked but claims he's not responsible - let's examine that. The only other option is he has a rogue dealer. Well, who hired the dealers? So now you have to have a rogue dealer colluding with some mystery player. As far as I know, the dealer(s) didn't bring any players (this would be kinda sus anyway, right?). So now we're left with some wild scenario where dealer shows up with a marked deck and recruits a random player right there at the game. Or, it's just the simple option and Mars is involved. It's HIS game. And oops, he's also huge winner in the game, hmmmm....

    • @-The-Darkside
      @-The-Darkside ปีที่แล้ว

      He claims he didn't hire the dealers or have the power to do so. The story is that they used a broad from some official place to hire dealers but the broad that turned up wasn't the same broad but acted like she was, with dealers in tow. It really shouldn't be difficult to find out who did what, doesn't sound like you need to be columbo. Some of the evidence is people griping about hands they lost, and a table of who won and lost and half the proper won and half lost. Wasn't exactly a slam dunk. I do think enough are suspicious that it's probably true but I wouldn't be quick to take the word of a guy who owes out millions.

    Doug, a suggestion : When you are questioning folks, or they are offering an account as evidence, try to make them understand the importance of avoiding pronouns in favor of actual names. This avoids ambiguities caused by statements like "Then asked Tom to play but he said he had to call his friends first. But after the game started they didn't want any part of it so he said...." Even if it seems obvious and pedantic, insisting on identifying each pronoun makes statements clearer and more useful as testimony
