The rear end feeling higher is because you reduced the fork travel by 10mm. If you want it to feel similar to how it was originally, I'd recommend going for a mullet setup.

Fun fact, the old Colossus n9 with the fs3 linkage only weight 13.8kg.
But it was also full carbon and cost 3k more than the current one in my country's currency lol. Or 2.2k USD.
I have a Colossus T8, the 140mm trail version. It's about the same weight as the n9 back then.
But like it's a Collosus, none of them ever feel near as heavy as they actually are.
I also have a 2017 Siskiu d7 that should be slightly lighter but it feels way heavier.

Hey Evan, enduro racer here. IMO the biggest thing you can do to improve your riding if you're serious about training for racing is adding in 2-3 strength sessions per week (if you arent already). Focus on explosive movements and work on building your core. I promise you will feel a difference in your riding in a couple weeks.
I would lean more towards the 10 hrs a week side of things - im not sure 15 is necessary unless you're planning on doing XC especially with the family and all that. Obviously stick to mostly z2 but add some more intensity intervals one day as well.

Hey man! Thanks for the tips. I'm sure I'll try Enduro eventually, but those Enduro race speeds can be scary AF. So XC and cyclocross are what I'm eyeing. I have a gym membership so I will add that in. I'm really considering making daily videos of training for a second channel

So much this! I'm out with a broken leg, but weight training, endurance training, and ESPECIALLY stretching has made a monster difference. Evan looks like he's in good shape but for anyone that isn't, I'd add diet to that too ... Funny how the best way to be a better rider doesn't include actually riding your bike, but for enduro racing it's tried and proven!!

Calling this bike "Upduro", Enduro or whatever anyone else care to label it is kind of silly. The most important thing about any bike is that you have FUN riding it. I've grown to love riding so much in the past 3 years that I have only put just over 1000 (1035.8 )miles on my vehicle. I ride nearly everywhere now and I don't like anywhere near a bike friendly town like Bentonville! I have fun on each and every ride.

I am actually planning on doing some stuff to my 2016 Fuel EX8. Its started off as a 120mm front/120mm rear travel bike. I plan to over fork it too 140mm with a fox 34 or 36. May experiment and see if I can do something to get more travel out of the rear as well. Plus a new wheelset and drivetrain and a custom paint job. I can't afford a new bike but this should make it much more capable. You have inspired me to attempt to do more to my bike myself.

I love lighter faster tires on my bikes, particularly the rear. Adds a great snappiness. I'm planning to convert my 2023 Norco Optic mid-travel trail bike (with enduro geo) into a downcountry bike with 130 in the front and 120 in the rear, and I'm probably going to try out Vittoria Barzo front/Mezcal rear. It already has a Bontrager XR2 on the rear, which I picked randomly off the shelf at my local Trek when the stock Martello had a sidewall burst. I'm not a fan of Bontrager tires (I had three punctures that required replacement on the Bontrager GR1s for my Trek Checkpoint gravel bike within like three months, and then learned they don't have any anti-puncture tech), but the XR2 is one of my favorite tires. After the fiasco with the GR1s, I went to Vittoria Mezcal 44mm for my gravel bike, and they're easily my favorite tires ever.

I think too many people get hung up on what class a bike fits in and they are way over biked. Hardtails will do 99.99999% of all trails in North America if driven right.
Who cares what kind of bike it is as long as it fits and feels good. Ride it!
For fitness, put a bunch of weight in a backpack, grab one of your “enduro” bikes, loosen the rebound all the way up and pedal that disaster train up a bunch of hills with long climbs and short descents. Do that 2 days a week and lift 2 days a week. It works.

I've been under-tiring bikes for years. Not as "polarized" as this experiment, but my go-to type of bike for years, has been a short-ish travel trailbike (around 130-140 mm), but in general I've fitted them with XC-tires (though not the absolute lightest kinds) + an insert.
We don't have much rock in Denmark where I live, so these super burly chunky tires are not that needed for grip I find. But the travel is good for forgiving mistakes on jumps, line choice and what not, when you learn to rider hard and more aggressive, as the lower weight and rolling resistance will allow you.
The travel is what is forgiving particularly for someone on the heavier side. The beefy wheels and tires is what keeps your bike from disintegrating when riding lots of chunk super aggressive. But if the trails are not particularly chunky, you don't really need that level of robustness I find.
It's all about supporting your weak sides in relation to the trails you ride, and cutting weight and stability where you have it in excess.

  • @SprSonik13
    @SprSonik13 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

all you need is a killer light weight wheel/tire set and a burly wheel tire set to have essentially two completely different bikes. Basically why I am considering the BERD Hawk 30s for my Yeti SB 5.5 that is currently set up for park/aggressive trail.

A while ago I got my first enduro upgrading from a trail bike. There were no sick deals here in Spain as I need an XL and people ar shorter. However, I found a really good condition Orbea Rallon, which is just below your weight. However, second hand it cost me 2450, came with the 36 factory, XO1 stuff and a DHX2 coil shock. However, it also got enduro casings and rims. I think if you don't have the parts for cheap, or such a deal on a bike, a second hand high spec can be found if you wait and look a bit.
The trails you have are so so smooth I would for sure run lighter tires. Here I even do on rocks sometimes with the trail bike.
For the waterdrop, I just got inverse osmosis, and that's another great option!

@@mlee6050 just get some light enduro tires with the light casing if there are not too many rocks, get the middle one if there are (super gravity or DD). Especially the compound matters. In the rear put hard to mid, in the front mid to soft, depending on what you like. Soft soft is costly and slow, it literally slows you down going downhill, but the grip is uncompared and it dampens out the trails a lot.

I ride XC type tyres all the time on my short travel trail bike, my favorite being the vittoria syerra, 840g for a 29x2.4, rolls almost as fast as their barzo but with more edge grip than the agarro, on hardpack and loose over hard you don't need a big chunky heavy enduro tyre, they just make your bike feel sluggish, I ride with people on enduro bikes with enduro tyres all the time, and they're not any faster, unless you ride in a area with lots of sharp rocks then you may need a dual ply tyre.

You should put a grippier front tire. Maybe a Specialized Slaughter or Butcher 2.5. Would still get some of the nice efficient rear end with that combo.

Basically trail bikes are the best! There is much more of a case for light bikes than I would like to admit. My main rides are 160/160 and 170/166 and if anything that will change to 170/170 and 180/166. Neither of them is light though the 160 one is about 37 lbs now. I would love a lighter bike but I can’t stand the flexy feel of lighter bikes (and my arse is fat).

Not sure if you are aware of this but most serious mountain bikers do not adhere to the category of “boxes” that you described. You may purchase an enduro bike but that does not mean you need to ride “enduro”. Most people buy a bike that suits the trails they mostly ride. Then go a step further to change some components to really suit those specific trails.
I watch a lot of your videos and you often get hung up on categories within the broader sport of biking. Didn’t you just say we are all just riding bikes? My $10K bike certainly does not make me better than anyone in the sport. At the same time it does not require me to live up to any standard that other people have decided in their minds based on the price of a bicycle.
Build your bike the way you like and ride the trails that make you happy.

I converted my 150/160mm travel Specialized Stumpjumper EVO into a "All-Mountain-Cross" bike. I ditched the stock tires for a lightweight fast-rolling 2.6 Maxxis Rekon front and 2.6 Maxxis Ikon rear. I installed a 28 tooth chainring for that super low granny gear. I adjusted the geometry to the steepest head angle and lowest bottom bracket. I narrowed up the handlebars. I firmed up the rear suspension to improve pedaling efficiency. Weighs 31 pounds. There you have it, a long-travel Downcountry bike. Climbs and pedals like an XC bike. Descends like an All-Mountain bike.
