I needed to hear this. I almost quit drumming last year. But I got myself back up and kept playing and practicing even harder everyday and a huge thanks to drumbeatsonline and it's awsome content for everyone who wants to become a better drummer and have fun drumming 🙂.

Everyone has a talent for something. Musical talent comes more naturally for some and others really have to work at it..... and some that work really hard at it still never get to be very good. That being said, you should follow your passion and know that no matter what level of expertise you achieve it is the journey you should enjoy. When I was very young (around 10 - 12) I started out banging on my parent's truck dashboard on long road trips that we went on nearly every weekend. My dad then asked an older sibling of mine to find a drum set for me for Christmas when I was around 12. I started banging on this basic 5 piece kit with no lessons. I listened to the radio and tried to mimic the stiongs. I am right-handed but started playing with a left lead on hi-hat because I never saw another drummer play before. One day one of my older brothers comes in my room, sits down, and does this odd thing where he crossed his hands to play a little beat. After that, I re-taught myself how to play in this "odd" new way where my right-hand was no lead. on the hat. I added some roto toms after a while. Then one day, I heard drums down the block. Huh, another drummer? I eventually ran into this older hippy looking guy who was renting the upstairs of a house at the end of the block. My buddy and I were invited in to see his drums set. Wow! It was huge. It was around 8 to 10 drums and about 4 cymbals. I was in love. As time went on, I continued to practice to the radio. Finally, in 11th grade I joined band for the first time. I couldn't read music, but I could play the set pretty good. My counterparts in the percussion section were no match for me on the kit but I had much to learn. I joined jazz band and pep band. 11th and 12th grade was awesome as I was "the drummer" in school. Well, in 11th grade I met a keyboard player in school and he was in a band with a fellow student bass player and guitar player. They had a lead singer several years older. Their drummer was going into the military so they asked me to join. Yes! It was an awesome ride. I played in this band for about 4-5 years even while I was in college. Great experience and taught me a lot. I was then out of band until I was in my late 20's. I joined another band and played with them for about 5-6 years. My skills as a drummer grew exponentially from my late teens to my late 20's and into my early 30s. After my 2nd band gig ended I felt that I hit a wall and reach the extent of my talent. I didn't play much for a while then started playing at home again. I was once again listening to music and watching some videos. I was a bit rusty but the rust came off quickly. Then something happened, I was finding that I was learning some crazy new things. I was playing some patterns that I never thought I could. I was going back to songs I learned decades earlier and finding that I never really played them right but now I could hear everything much clearer. I couldn't believe how much better I was sounding. My body wasn't as young or as strong as it was when I was 25 but my brain slowed everything down and allowed me to, almost magically, hear things I never heard before. I'm not a Benny Greb or Thomas Lang and probably never will be. I'm just me and I'm okay with that. My journey to where I'm at hasn't always been easy and I know I wouldn't be the musician I am today without experiencing everything along the way. I will say that it helps to play and be around other musicians. You don't have to be in a band but just immerse yourself with the talent of others and watch and listen. You might be surprised as to how much you can learn and improve without ever lifting a stick. I think this goes for all musicians, not just drummers. I also encourage you to indulge other music genres that you may not normally like or listen to. Feeding your mind with all types of music will help you incorporate bits and pieces into your playing style. Now, rock on and let's pray for a better 2021.......!

2010 I suffered my first fail back surgery my drumming started was suffering. I had 2 more failed back surgery. I quit my band of 9 years of very busy giving. It was the hardest thing I had to do, other than losing my job. I totally just gave up on life. Stacked my drums and forgot about them. Years later I got a small fire lit. I set up my kit. I would only play 5 min and throw my sticks. I had lost so much of my groove, feel, fills, etc. Jump ahead to 2022 and I saw that Todd Schuerman was doing a drumming Masterclass in my area in sept. That phone call to reserve my spot sparked that fire that had been burned out. As you said in this clip about rembering that first kit, that first beat. I feel that again. With out a band now I'm free to really dive into the deep drummer within without any rules, learning songs I disliked. My newly found passion is also helping me love life again. I'll never be able to play in a band with my back I'm limited now but my limitations will only make me a better drummer by over coming them. It also has giving me a new found love to play the kit again.. Thank you for this video. I found it at the perfect time to keep pushing forward, even if I throw the sticks from time to time. Troy

Damn Gabe! Great video man. I was very fortunate to have made a career out of drumming! I've been playing in the pits on Broadway and session drumming for my whole adult life. I've faced "imposter syndrome" MANY times in my career. Especially when I don't get a gig. I work my butt off for the audition, learn the book, mentally prepare, and.......... nothing, not even a callback. But you know what I have learned? Would the feeling of success feel the way it does if everything went my way? Would I appreciate playing to sold-out theaters the way I do if I didn't know the feeling of wishing I had the chair? NO! I have learned that those lows are what make the highs so INCREDIBLE! You have to trust the process! Thanks for the reminder Gabe and best wishes in all your endeavors!

    Best drummer motivation video👍
I almost give up 5 years ago , after 30plus years of playing, but i met a guitarist , now this guy is my best friend , he "force" me to play things i never play, lots of odd time beats, in just 5 years i am a much better drummer than my 30plus years of punkrock and rockabilly style beats, my point?! Never stop, always be open to new people , new styles, playing music is a connection between souls , NEVER GIVE UP

I feel very stuck. Drumming is the only thing I’ve ever stuck with. I started around 2012 and took maybe one several year break a few years in as I didn’t have a place to play or the money to upgrade anything. I have a home I rent now and have an acoustic kit waiting for me to buy tom mounts and cymbals. I just got full time at my job so I know I can save up and get the gear eventually. I am not a beginner, not advanced, I am plateaud somewhere in between. I struggle with sever adhd so have a hard time focusing on rudiments. Courses like Drumeo seem to help, but again, I struggle to focus. I desperately want to record from home and make a TH-cam channel, maybe even session work one day. I will get it done. Everyone keep your heads up. 🤘🏼

Hey Gabe, I’ve been lucky enough to just have the mindset to push through, what we practise all the time is a hit and miss, sometimes it gets us to where we want to be other times we work on it for a while and it doesn’t envelope itself in our playing which is the worst feeling when you know you’ve been working on that for a long time. I teach drums part time and these students motivate me to be a better teacher and player, not to mention a better human being; thanks for the video mate, keep pushing, experimenting and putting in the time; you’ll find yourself where you want to be :)

Well said...I've been playing for over 25 years and I had those moments of light where everything I played and tried seemed effortless and then times when I couldn't play songs I've played my whole life... Learning how to find sweet spots with my pedals, throne height, spring tension, then the licks I just can't figure out and some 6 year old Japanese kid plays it like John Bonham...oh yeah...I say WTF am I doing a lot...But the thing that gets me thru are the days when I'm making music with other players and you can feel the experience coming out...the skill evel and hours of commitment and frustration each one of my band mates had on their own journeys, and it feels amazing to think...these guys want to play with me...Just keep playing, if you love it, it will come thru to those in your audience...doesn't matter what you play...from the simplest beat to the most compilcated prog or fusion genres...everyone has a story to tell and nobody's story is less valuable than anyone elses.

I just cant tell you how happy i am to see you back Gabe, I don't have a drumset in my house because im living in an aparment, and i was just hiring a studio to practice drums and after this virus spreads, i don't have that option... And just about those time, you were quit from the youtube and you said you need a rest, and yet i was just accepted in a band, my twins were sucks i didnt had any chance to practice because all the studios are closed, i dont have enough equipment to practice it, there is a seriously big earthquake happened 2 weeks ago and its aftershocks are still going on and everything was just coming on top of eachother. I was just too depressed, i got a kick pad to practice in home but after that, those were not like an acoustic drums, so i struggeled a lot and i was just thinking like what you've said in this video. And.. This helped a lot, you really gave me the courage to go back on my practice kit and just try my best to not get rusty. And even improve myself without the set. Just you dont lose your hope and will too, those are hard times, but we are here to support you and you are also supporting us. I really appreciate you back. Don't give up.

WELL this killed me, i payed and studied drums for 5 years and one day after living what this video describes perfectly, i decided to quit, yesterday after another 5 years i decided to take the only thing left from my drum set: my pad and a pair of sticks, and i cant explain with words all the good and bad things that im feeling right now after so long. This video touched my heart so bad, i wish this video was uploded sooner hahahah but well thats life it wasnt uploaded before but now it will help me to make the impossible and improove my skills at least at the point they used to be. thanks so much!

    Great Vide Gabe.
What you are saying applies to all parts of your life. I've had my ups and downs, but this quote is taped to my monitor and I read it every day.
“Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It's a very mean and nasty place and I don't care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard ya hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done!”

Thanks bro. This really helps. I enjoyed it. I know and see that I have come from so far in my playing and seeing progress each time. And then all of a sudden I get some bad experience or bad days, sometimes I feel like my playing not going anywhere. Sometimes feel discouraged but I still try to stay positive and forget what's behind me and just keep moving forward. I still ensure I still keep practicing and also keep praying. I trust God. Thanks I enjoyed this.

So i can truely recommend getting in a Band and If you stuck in your current Band, try to do new Things in this Band or get a new Project for yourself, which interests you.

Wow God is good, I play drums at my church from time to time but I always practice on a electric kit at home just to stay fresh and this same feeling came over me I’m always comparing myself to others. I remember when I first started learning when I was 18 certain people that I use to look up too told me to just stay on bass that the drums wasn’t for me In my church we have a few drummers but I was the only bass player at the time to I never really had a chance but now those very same people tell me I’m their favorite drummer but what happened?? So some reason I started feeling negative and what they told me when I first started was in my mind playing with me it’s been over a month that I felt stuck and discouraged but now this video here is helping me just push forward no matter what thank you

I remember just last week I was playing at my church, wondering if I was really good enough to be on that stage with the musicians I was, and the thought haunted me all through rehearsal. To start the set, I had to play my first ever drum solo with no tracks, no nothing--just me. I nailed it, and when I looked up, I not only saw a hundreds of awe-struck faces, but I saw a reflection of myself in the acrylic shield I was in. I played my next few notes, then looked back at my reflection and saw just how professional I looked behind the kit, just how strong my technique and showmanship was, and how much I had improved since I first set myself the goal to make the band. After we finished, I went backstage and pulled up my audition videos--and while they certainly made me cringe, it was unbelievably inspiring just how far I had come in only a year's time. I would not have gotten to the place I am today without this channel--I owe a lot to you, Gabe. Thanks man, and #KeepPushingForward.

i needed this, especially since i’m struggling picking up double bass and practicing during my inconsistent schedule. It’s only been 3-4ish months of practice, but if it takes a year or more to play comfortably at/past 180bpm to 210 bpm (my high school goal) then so be it.
