I try to write out transcriptions so they are readable (for me..). Chris definitely displaces the barline and the changes in this solo performance. I put double barlines where I felt the top of each chorus was but they may not line up to how you hear the phrases. I might read through this solo again at a later date and make some more corrections....
Dear Charles, You have made an awesome job. It is so great to have the opportunity to be able to read the music while Chris is playing. I can easily imagine how hard it was to transcribe that solo!!
Spot on! awesome job and for a 10+ minute solo! holy crap! In regards to the solo: It always amazes me how "simple" some of these ideas really are when you finally get them on paper. Of course not so simple to think up and execute flawlessly w/ great sound and time feel but Major triads can really sound cool in the right hands!!! I hope you get a publishing deal for all this work my goodness this is better than some hal leonard stuff!
My one dissapointment, as a brass player, is that while I can play all these notes, I cannot do all the little split fingerings for tonal variety and overtone playing that Potter does here. Great transcription!
Wow, what an amazing job you've done with this transcription! You must have scratched your head quite a few times as to how to notate some of this stuff! You're the freakin' man!
Thanx for checking out the website. Yeah, I do spend a lot of time transcribing but I really do enjoy it, plus I've gotten pretty fast. I still have time to have a life...sort of...LOL
Hey Don... no microphone into Finale (I wouldn't even know how to do that...LOL) Just listening to the solo and inputting 1 note at a time.... Thanx for checking out the website.
Redonculous! Would have liked to have had chord changes over the top with countdown changes also just to see how the lines relate but... Awesome work dude!
Thanks so much for your reply. My question wasn't meant to be critical. I was just curious. I truly appreciate the work you've done. I'm a long way from being able to transcribe a solo such as this. I could get the notes, but the rythms would tie me up a lot. Kudos to you. I plan to study this solo. Would you be interested in any analysis of mine?
Charles, you should contact Sher Music and Chris to do the official solo book (if there isn't one already....). Fantastic work! As to Chris, he's a fantastic player. Here, I hear Giant Steps and Sonny Rollins...
Chris seems to have touched all the (major) great tenor masters in sound and quotes: Hawkins, Byas, Rollins, Mobley, Brecker and yes, John William Coltrane himself - not forgetting the virtuosic Michael Brecker. It's the instructor's call for all to PRACTICE a la Chris Potter - and Michael Brecker, and John Coltrane and Charlie Parker before him (Chris Potter) Well done, Mr. Potter!
Charles, to transcribe, did you set a microphone up into finale?? By the way an incredible amount of work with all of your transcriptions. Also incredibly generous posting them for free....All the best to you!.......CHEERS!
This is a great transcription but just looking at the bar lines and aafkafbakffaka comparing mine to yours is a pain. I think 4 bars per system works better. Great job though and thanks for sharing
I love Chris Potter's sound and improvision, however whenever he comes to a loud section, I get scared, because I know that when he plays loud accents, the sound sorta.. pops. And it hurts. Maybe if the mic wasn't so sensitive or was further away... or maybe it's just part of his sound...
.............Oh I'm sorry, was he finished playing? My brain is still trying to process what my ears heard & my eyes saw! I'm going to practice with a new level of humility and drive!
he's out of this world.

I'm completely amazed at Chris Potter and equally amazed at Charles McNeal! Thank you for doing this!
Dear Charles,
You have made an awesome job. It is so great to have the opportunity to be able to read the music while Chris is playing. I can easily imagine how hard it was to transcribe that solo!!

Wow, what an amazing job you've done with this transcription! You must have scratched your head quite a few times as to how to notate some of this stuff! You're the freakin' man!
Overtone section at 7:13 is absolutely absurd. Literally inhuman control of the instrument.
Wow, thank you so much for doing this
Por MUUUUUCHO lo mejor que he escuchado. Si algún saxofonista desea aprender a tocar bien. CON SOLO ESTUDIAR ESTO BASTA.
Just checked your website... pretty impressed by the amount of transcriptions... mad props!!

Redonculous! Would have liked to have had chord changes over the top with countdown changes also just to see how the lines relate but... Awesome work dude!
His entire solo sounds so much like Rollins!

Wonderful. Thank you!

Big good work !thanks !
Virtuoso total!
amazing
Are those changes in meter accurate? Or is it easier to notate that way? Rather than passing phrases over the barline etc..?
thank you sir .. respect
Holy Fuck... He's so unbelievably good.
Unbelievable collection of transcriptions on your website. By the way, what do you do in your free time?
Wonderfull!

do you know where I could get sheet music for chris potter sun king
Do you know where I can get a transcription of Coltrane's "Countdown" solo? Do you have that? Can't find it anywhere scored for tenor.
I love how GameCube intro it gets almost halfway in
Woo !
I wanna see someone learn this.
How does he create that effect at 6:27
KingGoldingIV Overtones. Play the note you want to play and switch to the overtone fingering, it'll give it a slightly different sound.
This is a great transcription but just looking at the bar lines and aafkafbakffaka comparing mine to yours is a pain. I think 4 bars per system works better. Great job though and thanks for sharing
