  • Hello once more!
What's a TH-cam machining channel without a hammer building video? My thoughts exactly.
Join me on a journey of making what is essentially a rite of passage for any machinist, but with a twist! In addition to this, there are also a few goodies for ‪@rockupracing‬ 😉
As promised, this time featuring at least 50% more terrible humour as well as better lighting!

This Old Tony meets Inheritance Machine! Brilliant. Keep up the great work.

I was wondering why the hammer was as big as your lathe... It's a gift! Enjoyed all the skits but the race car pit stop tire change the chuck takes the cake. Keep at it, man!
PS. you missed an opportunity to make that tailstock die holder as a side project 😆

I'm pretty sure only you could pull off a side project that's more involved than the main part, Brandon 😂

All those sound effects, that intro, and such a good goof at 9:49 xD Best machining humor I've seen since good old ToT, can't wait to see more!

I love all the stickers of other TH-camrs on the machines. Its like an Easter egg hunt.

There's a handful of AvE ones that I dare not show on camera... 😂

I bet some Dwarf wrote a letter to Santa who he then forwarded to an Engineer Raised In Kingston

I was once a machinist, but I took a chuck key to the knee.

Either you've got Andre the Giant's hands, or you're working with some small bench top tools making big parts. Either way, I'm here for it. Inheritance Machining, ToT, Blondie Hacks, and AvE references. Can see where you get your inspiration.

Listen, I'm not saying This Old Tony has messed with the temporal settings on his lathe so much that the multiverse has spawned a British doppelganger but...

Hello please I am wondering why you use 3 jaw chuck and sometimes 4 jaw chuck maybe? My wife’s boyfriend says it is obvious but wont actually tell me why

Also those 3500 ball bearings at the end look yummy

I will try to answer as best I can whilst skilfully dodging the debatable premise of the question 👀
In order to hold a round piece of stock rigidly, a minimum of 3 points of contact are needed, hence why we use Jacob’s chucks for drills, and a somewhat altered version of that on the lathe. A 3 jaw will hold a round piece of work within a specific margin of concentric error(my one is a fairly cheap one, so it’s not brilliant) meaning that whilst the workpiece is spinning, it will, more than likely, be off centre of its rotational axis.
For most machining operations this is absolutely fine, and 3 jaws are predominantly used due to the fact that they’re quick and easy. However, for all intents and purposes - they’re inaccurate, which is where the 4 jaw comes in. The jaws on a 4 jaw move independently in a linear fashion on what is essentially a rack and pinion gear train. By using a DTI(Dial Test Indicator. The clock looking thing), the operator can measure how much runout there is on each of the 4 points and adjust the jaws in an out accordingly to centre the workpiece within a much tighter tolerance. Simply put - it’s an adjustable chuck.
      Hope that makes sense.

@@EngineerRaisedInKingston so what you’re saying is that three jaw is fine for most things but sometimes you need a greater level of accuracy and a four jaw can deliver?
I will report back to wifey’s boyfriend and I’ll let you know if he agrees. If he’s impressed by my knowledge, he’ll buy me a PS5!

@bikerbevan 3 jaw checks typically all move together at the same time, or "self center". But each jaw on 4 jaw chucks moves independently. This is what let's him account for those small adjustments needed to true up the part evenly.
