Traditional Khaen Morlum Lao Folk Songs in order- Lum Phutai, Lum Tang Vai, Lum Khonsavan (All 3 From Savannakhet Province)

Jonny Olsen grew up in California where he was a sponsored skateboarder ( • Jonny Olsen-118 Collab... ) and singer for a punk band called L.A.O. (Life's All Over- in a positive way) What an interesting omen that the band name also spells Lao.
Even though Jonny did not have a clue back then where Lao is or what the khaen is. He found out about the khaen by working at a Thai Vegan restaurant as a chef with Thai and Lao people. They invited him to go travel to Thailand and he happily accepted.
While Jonny was in Bangkok, he bought the khaen as a souvenir. He played it and fell in love with the sound. It is a frequency that really connects with his heart and spirit. He loves to entertain people by performing the khaen and singing his Lao folk and pop songs.
After work at the restaurant, Jonny and his Lao friend Tommy would go to another restaurant to sing karaoke songs. Jonny was just singing for fun, but he received a lot of good feedback and support from the Thai and Lao people. They wanted to hear the "Farang" sing Morlum Lao folk music. This encouraged Jonny to want to learn more. He traveled to Thailand and learned from a famous Morlum folk singer in Khon Kaen named Ratri Sivilai. She helped Jonny make his first album with the featured hit single-"Farang Yak Pen Morlum" which means the foreigner wants to be a Morlum folk singer.
When people found out that Jonny was there learning to play the khaen and sing the Morlum folk music, they wrote up articles in the newspapers and invited him on many TV shows.
Jonny toured around with his teacher Ratri Sivilai in Thailand, Sweden, and Taiwan for charity events for Buddhist temples. He also performed for many charity events at Buddhist temples all throughout the U.S.A. and Canada.
In 2005, Jonny became the first westerner Khaen Master Champion in Khon Kaen, Thailand. Jonny learned khaen in Thailand and Laos with all the top Khaen Masters such as Sombat Simlah from Mahasarakham, Thailand and Somdee Luangnikorn from Laos.

When I studied salaw saw seung in Chiang Mai my ajaan gave me a pii jum (the single reed 'flute' which is inserted in the mouth). I was told it was of Burmese origin, but it is near impossible to sort that history out. Very rare instrument in Thailand these days, at least in the North, but an unmistakable sound. Well done, sir. keng maak, khrap (sorry takes forever for me to type in Thai)!

Hi! I just subscribed! Last week at a nephew's birthday party, a great uncle (we both married vietnamese women) gave me a khaen he was given from a village chief in Laos over 50 years ago when he was with an american advisory group. It leaks air quite a bit but I am taking care to get it all sealed up to make it playable. Your videos are great and I expect to learn a lot from them. I will definitely keep you in mind if I have questions. I taught myself đàn bầu (vietnamese monochord) and am considered OK and have translated the text taught at the TP HCMC conservatory into english so I know what kind of learning curve I have ahead of me. Also learned the đàn môi, a highland jaw harp. It doesn't get easier when you're pushing 60 hard, but it's great fun. Especially the looks you get when you play the traditional music (O.o) to the elderly. Thanks so much for offering to help everyone! So rare...
I'd like to thank Jonny very much for showing Lao folk music to the world. Truly Laos tradition has been hiddened from the world due to lack of media support, but it is a wonderful place to explore. I have been in US for over 20 years, but my heart has always been in Laos. I really enjoy your clips.

My father used to say, there are three things associate with Lao people well: (1) one is Can or Kaen, (2) sticky rice (kao neow), and (3) sarong (pa ka ma).
