- A good day in Ban Kengkok, Savannakhet, Lao PDR, together with the local singer Mr. Poua, his family and friends - and a bottle of lao khao.
Adding to the atmosphere, you can hear Mr. Poua's son working at his sawing machine in the background :).
Khaen is G-minor (Made by Ajarn Somdee) played in "handicapped" Lai Po Sai (since some tones were jammed due to long time playing that day :D ).
Recorded in Ban Kengkok, July 2012 with a Canon PowerShot S80
I love all Lao folk songs with Khaen. You’re so good and appreciate you playing our national instrument. I was from Pakse so I grew up listening to Lum Sipundorn and Lum Saravanh a lot. More please.

Where is the beer and wine let get drunk with this awsome music
Andy, I would suggest that you go out and buy a G-minor khaen and imitate Galliver. There are 5 playing modes, i.e. Lai Yai, Lai Noi, Lai Sootsanaen, Lai Soi, and Lai Po Sai. Ha..Ha I am still a beginner too.
@gullivergarden
In a last week 15/2/2014 I have go to Boun Phavet Lao Festival in Kengkok, Savannakhet Laos My dad's hometown. That's I have seen your Video before. And I want to tell you know Mr. Poua he is my dad's cousin and now he has passed away already on Nov 2013.
Oh I am really sad to hear that :( I have tried to contact him a few times recently on his mobile phone, and learned that the number didn't exist any more. So I feared that maybe something has happened... I will always remember this nice man and the good time we had together :)
Dear Andyucs00741! Are you familiar with Lai Po Sai? That is the mode that the khaen is played in. The khaen is G-minor. I do not have any notes, but advice you to try to learn khaen playing the traditional way - by ear and eye :) I think I have a recording of Lai po sai playing that can serve for educational purposes, I'll let you know if I upload it! best regards...
Hi, I have a question to ask when you blow Khaen "Lai Khon Sa Wan" you put your finger close to the bamboo hole just like the blow Khaen "Lai South Sa Mean" ?
Hi Gulliver, are you sure you're in lai bo sai, not sootsanen? I mean, I'm trying to follow your playing but I can't seem to find the key, even after changing the pitch with software. I can't hear the high drone.
Dear Plasmicity :) thank you so much for your comment! It's seems you are well connected to the world of the khaen :)
Well, the thing is that I played in what I described as "handicapped" lai po sai :p - I call it like that since we had been playing and singing for so long that day that some of the tones on the khaen (those with two reeds per tone, Ajarn Somdee insisted on making khaen this way) became out of tune - I think this occurs because of condense water inside the khaen or something, because after drying until next day it becomes fine again! So, that is the reason that you can not hear the high drone; the high F, that should have been there was so out of tune that I decided it was better not to use it. Also the high E flat is out of tune, you can hear I use it a couple of times, and then decides to leave that one out as well :p
So that is the reason it is not so easy to hear that this is really lai po sai...
All the best khaen wishes,
Mikkel
gullivergarden Thanks for the info Gulliver. Do you have any contacts for Lao khaens? I am planning on a trip this summer and would like to purchase one Thai and one Lao khaen.
