I did a pretty big haul yesterday. Here’s what I got:
    Shaft
    Pink Flamingos
    The Damned
    Death in Venice
    The American Friend
    Fail Safe
    Pierrot Le Fou
    Shame
(Yes the Night Porter is S&M nazi fetish. It’s pretty messed up)

I would never buy a rattling criterion either, so that pass is completely valid. A non rattling Ikiru tho.. that’s a different story! Great haul Carlos, I’m glad you finally picked up The Celebration.

I think "Scanners" is definitely worth the time. It is my favorite of Cronenberg's films, and it is one of the films that inspired me to become a filmmaker. I highly recommend it!

Carlos, love your channel. First time commenting on one of your videos, too (don’t know why it took me until now, but here we are).
I love Claire Denis! She’s one of my favorite filmmakers ever. I think Beau travail is a wonderful masterwork, but I’d also recommend Trouble Every Day and 35 Rhums as well: all three, I feel, capture the beauty of what makes her cinema immaculate.
Again, thank you for the great content! I’ve been revisiting your Criterion videos for inspiration for this sale (you’ve definitely come in clutch) and they’re great! Looking forward to the next one!

Behind you at the end! Princess Kaguya!
Finally picked up Valerie myself after having it on DVD for many years. Glad to upgrade. Every time I think my wishlist is pretty small I realize I could get 50 titles and still want many more and I have 500+ Criterions. Didn't see Minding the Gap in stores here. I'll have to check again.
Also, Dick Johnson is Dead is on Netflix. It's very good.

I would highly recommend checking out/blind buying Local Hero. It’s a quirky and emotional film and Burt Lancaster and Peter Capaldi are excellent

I think there might be a design issue with the Ikiru packaging. I bought it as a blind buy last week at a Tennessee Barnes & Noble and when I opened the box at home, the disc was not really in place, and it was difficult to snap it back into the holder. Don't regret buying it though. Absolutely incredible film.

Valeria and her Week of Wonders is definitely worth a watch/buy. A very unique film and one of the most sumptuous ones out there. Bursting with symbolism and a fantastic original score as well!

Naked Island is a Great Movie... it will stay with you forever... I loved it... Of course, it's sad, desperate and lonely, slow build to the climax and it's an amazing dive into the most basic human emotions... AND .. you completely buy into the premise -- No dialog...

Scanners is pretty good, I like it a lot, the biggest issue is the lead is terrible. But in a bizarre way his wooden acting helps create this strange world for me, but I can’t say in good conscious say it’s not the worst Cronenberg released by Criterion. Falls in the middle of his filmography overall for quality I would say. 100% worth watching once, staple even imo

beau travail is the best by Denis. But... if you like documentaries: Sans Soleil is the best fucking documentary ever made and a serious contender for the titel: best film ever made. You can watch it on youtube for free, and you will buy it as soon as possible. It's in a scense more psychodelic as Koyaanisqatsy in my opinion. Just saying.

    Some phenomenal picks
Ace in the Hole is fantastic, Miller's Crossing is also excellent. A friend of mine has been telling me to watch The Ascent and now you, so I will be planning to get around that soon.
Also you didn't acknowledge it but I saw Betty Blue on the shelf and I recommend that film. It has a great performance by Beatrice Dalle. Quite controversial as well.
An actor friend of mine was in a theatre production of The Celebration last month, I had COVID during its run so I didn't see it but I was very disappointed by that.
I agree in preferring the Del Toro Nightmare Alley, even though the original is really good still, I think the Production Code of the time soured it's ending.
Tess is a great film despite who directed it. It has a fantastic lead performance and looks incredible. Polanski made it because it was Sharon Tate's favourite book and she told him that it would make a great movie. It's also the book she is looking for in that one scene in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood where she enters the bookstore.

In my opinion scanners was not good. Then again I haven't seen all of croenenbergs filmography. But definitely one of the worst lead performances of all time and a pretty disappointing film. Great effects and cool moments, but really nothing great.
