- While no one thinks of DOS as a platform that had great Shmups, it actually did. Some real amazing games released on it, and were a lot of fun. Now, these were A-listers naturally, and we're here today to see what was on the subs bench between 1988 and 1997. So... Let's. ;)

No matter how many different schmups I've seen - there is only one for me - Tyrian - the music, the graphics, the look and feel - there is just nothing like it, it so well esthetically wrapped up.
I'll put Moonpod Starscape right next to it, but its the next millenia so it has to wait up.
Tyrian is amazing! But it's also a hit, and the series is all about those forgotten, ignored or overlooked titles. One per year. :)
No Raptor? Blasphemy! :D
and tyrian
No blasphemy here :) DOS Time Travel is a series focusing on b-listers, games that are overlooked, forgotten or ignored. One per year '88-97, and not hits whatsoever. I've covered the hits more than once. :)
Same reason, it's a series about those rather unknown and ignored games, and not hits. I've covered both huge hits (Tyrian/Raptor) in order videos, more than once, I'm sure. :)
4:21 "...to be shot at by any alien?" (Woah ooh woah ooh woah woah)
You're on a roll tonight with them songs!
You are awesome! some new games I did not know, thank you for giving such an output and information with your videos! - keep on it! - Greetings from Austria!
Thanks! I'm aiming for less known games with this Time Travel series. No hits, and one game per year '88-97. :)
The next one's gonna have few really fun picks too. Most not great, all really really interesting, and innovative.
If I remember correctly, Baryon came out around the same time as Tyrian. While Baryon had more spectacle and had better gameplay according to a couple friends, Tyrian with it's shields and armor was easier and less frustrating to come to grips with, not to mention upgrading the dozens of weapon systems scratched that certain *numbers go up -> neuron activation*-itch.
Also, I'd been trying to find out what that one shmup was that I played with a couple friends on their computer one weekend, and I could now swear it was Galactix.
Thanks for covering it :D
Tyrian is amazing, Baryon is fun, but it's not Tyrian. :)
And yeah, you're welcome. That's the plan with the series, to cover less known titles, one per year '88-97 and skip hits entirely as they've been covered a hundred times or more, and dozen by me at least. ;)
I was a bit disappointed that Tyrian wasn't included, but then you put in Alien Phobia. Such simple concept, so much fun. Got two sequels too :P
Tyrian's not in the video, as DOS Time Travel is the series that by design only covers unknown, ignored or overlooked games. One per year 1988 to 1997. And no hits. Hits I've covered more than once in many other of my earlier videos. :)
I remember failing so many times in a level in Galactix that the game show a message about and give me a boost with a lot of weapons.
Seriously? That's such a fun and gamer friendly mechanics. :)
Galactix was a pretty okay shooter, the grappling of power up a unique and fun twist.
It was unlike anything else, but I think I prefer my powerups dropping down anyway. xD
2:00 that black platform looks like a radio-controlled toy car controller
Kinda does.
26:49 Some... BODY once told me, the world is gonna roll me...
I ain't the sharpest tool in the shed...
The arcade version of Ajax had some pseudo 3D sections, where the player controls a jet fighter, probably inspired by AfterBurner. I think most home ports had it too, even on the Speccy. Didn't the PC port have these levels?
Yes, and all the other ports had it too. Even the 8bit ones. It's just DOS that for whatever the reason seem to be in 2D only. At least I've never seen a 3D stage in it.
No Zone 66? Zone 66 had some of the best top-down graphics of the time and some fantastic music. It's only issue was you needed to do some wizardry with EMS and XMS because of its crazy memory requirements.
I considered Zone 66 for it, but it seemed a bit more well known the the other pick for the year, and I try to show these more overlooked games in this Time Travel series, rather than hits.
Baryon was great! But it felt like it was going at 1,5 speed.
Well, these oldies were not known for being easy :)
Major stryker had cool music.
And for those early games, gameplay too.
7:29 ignoring the lit engine indicator again?
I'd say 'dis but a scratch, but it's a plane and not a knight xD
Great video, as usual, with bonus great narration. :)
I had Tyrian as a kid and kept failing at it after the first planet or two, so I spent way more time on Flying Tigers, which was much easier. The first one. Though, looking at your footage, it looks identical to what I played as a kid. Hmmm... Btw, weren't the volcanoes indestructible? :D
I saw that you're a fan of enemy patterns and memorisations. I'd say that I consider shoot'em ups as casual mindless games, so memorisation seems like a bit of a chore. :P
Also, it seems that I'm being called on once again to save everyone's bacon. Both figurative and literal bacon. XD Very well. But I expect some eggs for a successfully saved bacon. :P
Flying Tigers II was a bit more varied than the first. I appreciate a good shooter, it's also why Warblade is my fave of all time. But bullet hell games are a bit too much for me most of the time. Not because they are bad, but because I fail to muster strength to give them enough time to master them. I'll give you an apple for every ton of bacon you'll save. Deal?
@@OldAndNewVideoGames I agree that having a nice health bar and possibly a shield in this type of game is so much better. Mastering a game should be for those ambitious enough to get a top score. We regular people should have the chance to finish the game, in my opinion. :)
An apple for a ton of bacon? I've got a lot of apples already. I might just keep the bacon... unless you can make me a better offer. :P
@@TeaAndTankControls 2 apples!
@@OldAndNewVideoGames You drive a hard bargain, sir... It's really hard to refuse, since you've doubled your initial offer... And you know I like apples... Hmm... Ok, deal! Get those apples ready. I'm off to save your bacon! :D
@@TeaAndTankControls Nice! I'll get the pan running, it's time to fry!
Dzięki za klucz GOG.
Smacznego! :)
I thought i hated shoot em ups, but did i understand it correctly that desert strike is a shootemup? In that case i hate bullet hells. I have only played one bullet hell game i liked. U.N Squadron. But that was not DOS, but Amiga.
The genres are fluid, especially these days, but yes, I'd argue that bullet hells are a very specific subgenre of shoot'em ups. Also, UN Squadron is pretty good. :)
Sidewinder looked great for the time & plays well to but it’s not a patch on the Amiga version’s graphics & especially sound… I have a feeling that’s going to become feature in the early parts of this list?
Well &£@#, so much for that theory! A-Jax, so named because there’s a popular cleaning product English speakers can’t pronounce called “Ajax”, is actually one I know from the Spectrum where it was OK, so-so, alright. Never played the PC version. Darn those aliens, always invading earth, yet if you tell your boss you’re late because of an alien invasion they never believe you?
I don’t know Operation Harrier? Looks fun though.
Now we’re back to better on the Amiga. The PC version is OK but if you’re going to play Battlestorm play the Amiga version.
A don’t know Galactix & I can’t help thinking that’s because it’s not great, from what you’ve said/shown?
Major Stryker, not to be confused with the X-Men character, only released for DOS, which is surprising because whilst the 16bit home micros were on their way out in ‘93 they weren’t dead?
Flying Tigers II isn’t the best but it’s fun. I think the improvement over the first game makes it feel better than it probably is?
I don’t know Baryon as I’d mostly left 2D shooters behind in ‘95 but it looks fun? Perhaps one to give a go?
I was confused by Seek and Destroy being released in ‘96?! 😄 It’s an Amiga game but the PC version looks pretty good… for an Amiga game, not necessarily for a 1996 PC game?
How do you know when I have nothing to do?! *Get out of my head!* 😄 Alien Phobia looks like ass & has so little going on I’m not going to bother.
Going by your story at the end I’ve called the emergency services in your country & they’ll be over presently. 😄
Fun video, I love when you highlight games I don’t know & there are a couple of games here worth a look, Thank you!
Well, you're right 88-91/2 if a particular game had an Amiga port, regardless of the genre, chances are that it looked better there than on PC, and _definitely_ sounded much better! And yeah, Battlestorm was overflowing in colour on the Ami, and on PC in VGA mode... Somehow... No one knows why... It just looks flat.
You're an X-Men fan? Now... Sir, I salute you! I love the X-Men. And I do for the exact reasons they made them. To spread the wave of equality and understanding in the World that was more prejudiced than it shouldn't. Which is odd, as I was never really in any minority, I just always felt that there should be no term for it. Minority/majority I mean, when talking about humans. We should be just that, humans, all of us, regardless of our preferences in terms of our believes, who we love or where we come from. That's why I love the X-Men.
Baryon is fun, give it a go. It's a bit tough too, so keep that in mind.
And yeah, Seek and Destroy released 3 years earlier on the Amiga, so that's why it feels dated on PC in 1996.
Baryon has an arcade version too
Serious?
@@OldAndNewVideoGames baryon future assault
@@burntyper Holy moly! There is one! Thanks! I'll check it out!
I think I played baryon before but not on pc, maybe it was on snes...
As far as I know it's a PC exclusive, but I'm not one to argue if I make a mistake, so if you can prove me wrong, I'm actually going to be happy about it, in a way, as I'll learn something new and interesting. :)
