Did you know that Loom was supposed to be a triolegy.
The first game featured Bobbin Threadbare. The 2nd game was going to feature the blacksmith kid who you accidently brutally murdered. And according to interviews the 3rd game was going to be the sheephearder you helped in loom.
All 3 games was going to have radio plays as well to further the story (only the first game got that)
Unfortunatly due to it being so different, it didnt sell well at the time causing the projects to be scrapped :(

Oh man, Dreamweb is still one of my all time favorites! I even had the review for the CD version published back in the days of paperback magazines. Yeah, I know it's not a particularly awesome adventure game and I am perfectly aware that Ryan is a bit of a dork, but man - those vibes, that depressing atmosphere... All that stuff was (and I would say still is) rock solid. I still listen to the OST from that title from time to time, and the addition of the diary in the retail box sure was a neat little thing.
Also, super cool to see Fable getting a mention. While I still have a vivid memory of playing this one way back when, I have literally never heard of anyone talking about and over time I have developed this suspicion that I have merely imagined the whole thing.
Anyway, just wanted to add that - being a bit of a dinosaur - I really dig your channel and the stuff you're unearthing. You sure know your stuff and I respect that.

    • @OldAndNewVideoGames
      @OldAndNewVideoGames  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I remember reading about Dreamweb before I even got a chance to play it, and I got sooooo into it. And then I tried playing it, and I didn't know what to do at all. It took me few attempts, but loved it after. Not an easy game, but well worth the effort.
Fable is a bit of an overlooked gem, but I think it's all because when it released. We've been mostly into Windows by then, and new DOS games weren't as popular anymore. And there were considerably fewer of them.
Thank you! :) I really appreciate and value comments like that. They make my day!

you can tell they had a ton of enthusiasm when they started making it, made it linearly and ran out of steam by the end as it gets super basic and then the ending feels incomplete, like we just need to finish it and we're tired of working on it. hehehe.

Shadowgate is impressive for its day. Mouse control wasn’t new in 1988 but it wasn’t standard either. Shadowgate used a windowed interface & mouse control to make best use of the hardware available at the time whilst also being an immersive & (for the time) substantial game, all in hideous CGA with beep screecher audio.
I don’t know Personal Nightmare but I sense a joke about your boss’ wife coming… no? Colour me surprised! 😄 The game sounds interesting though & does a good job of the environment looking like a British country village of the time though?
Loom stands out as something special for the time & still stands out as a great piece of story telling with some unique mechanics that make it a must play for anyone interested in gaming history.
Cruise for a Corps is quite well known amongst the TH-cam retro gaming community but less well remembered outside of that which is a shame because it’s excellent! It’s very Agatha Christy meets L.A. Noire & works really well. It’s a classic that everyone should try, at least once.
Amazon: Guardians of Eden is new to me? Sounds like a blast though? I love SBiG (So Bad it’s Good) movies & that’s a genre that can be passed to games in the right circumstances.
I didn’t spot a single Steam key but 100 hidden Cthulhu fish is £1.84 at time of writing so I think I’ll be OK? 😄
Return of the Phantom looks great for its day & presents a compelling story, it’s definitely worth a play.
Dream Web was controversial in it’s day for it’s gore, violence & sexual content which seems pretty tame by modern standards but the gritty world, no holds bared story & decent gameplay make it well worth a play through today.
I still have a big box copy of Flight of the Amazon Queen & still go back to it from time to time. It’s a well balanced game that’s not just a list of bad jokes like some point & click games of the time.
Got to say, I really like the presentation of Fable (1996). The story book graphics were not unique but fit the game well. I like it & I’d recommend it to anyone wanting to get in to these old games as it’s a fairly light & easy game to get to grips with.
The Last Express looks beautiful for it’s time & does tell a compelling story but to be honest the realtime gameplay gets on my nerves. I don’t want to have to be in the right place, at the right time just to see the train guard juggle 3 copies of his head. I know Cruise for a Corps kind of does the same thing but not really & it’s a lot more forgiving with your opportunities to talk to people.
What a list! At first I was thinking why didn’t you choose this game or that game but quickly realised how long that list would get, so going for some of the somewhat “hidden gems” makes a lot of sense. Fun video, thanks!

    • @OldAndNewVideoGames
      @OldAndNewVideoGames  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

In all honesty, I tried recording Shadowgate for the video, but I so sucked at it today, it was beyond unusable. xD
You know, I was thinking about saying something about my boss' wife with Personal Nightmare, but I didn't want the video to become just a series of little stories about her.
There was actually 8 keys for 100 Hidden Cthulhu Fish. I know for a fact that one has been claimed already, but the other 7... They may still be there.
I loved Dreamweb! Played it first on the Amiga, and it was bliss!
Fable looks great and is fun, but the ending, in either of the versions really is a bit... I don't know... Flat?
Yup, the idea here was to avoid the triple-A games altogether. I have plenty of videos with these. :)

This is a video worth of the bacon button. :) Even if I just listened to it for now while walking. You have a list of really good games there.
Loom is a real gem and I really need to play it. I'm glad you included it here. :) It needs more love.
I've seen a playthrough of Return of the Phantom and it's got a mysterious atmosphere.
Oh, Fable I've actually played. XD Not to completion, I think. It was a bit lacking in storytelling, but still nice.
And, even if I don't quite hate parsers with the passion of a competitive whistler with dry mouth, I'm very happy when mouse controls are an option.
Oh, and that's nice of you and the game maker to give those keys away! :)

(Shadowgate) Over exaggerating the fear of night is fairly reasonable play for most stories. altho i prefer being in the night. everything is bit prettier, things have more depth visualy.
Also (possibly from same movie?) before there was any light there was the dark and after last sun stops reacting there will also be darkness...
So to pick a fight with something that is timeless and clearly going to win is bad idea i guess.
the extreme lethality dose not realy appeal to me just the idea behind he story.
(Loom) yeah thats one of those games that got me not comprehending what its expecting me to do... i DO remember i did play Dig too and that one was far more managble, still over my head tho.
shame because Loom is pushed hard by people who played it at the time as one of best games of the era.
(curse for a corpse) the talk first and than deal with everything else is pretty good fit for my personal tastes to be fair, i love Hercuile Poirot (especialy D. Suchett version, whom like Peter Falk and Larry Hagman pretty much mastered their role to a point where no suitable alternative actor could ever do as good of a job - not that i am suggesting either peter or larry should've do hercuile poirot).
Tho i am always worried if all dialogue has high stakes, i like lower strips more .) it too offten goes into one or the other pitfall: it can be one and done failure for each talk or it realy dose not matter what you ask NPC...
(the devil haunting presenter's day work premises) man that dose sound like bosses i once had... payed me JUUUUST over legal minimum for 12 hour long night shift guarding job because that was lowest they could legaly pay me.
If anything that beast would deserve being thrusted into realm of not having money for say a year just so that she could appretiate how bad she treated those workers.
Now i am no legal expert but surely there have to be labour laws that'd give them some leverage in the situation - they did nearly full day's work they should've been paid for full day no matter the side quest the bitch i mean bosse's wife (i am sorry i did not mean to talk bad of female dogs, they are just as lovely and cuddly as male doggos and do not deserve to have their name besmirched by being likened to the woman in question).
(Fable) how the hell did Molyneux cheat makers of THIS fable out of that name?
this seem rather fascinating as the game title looks mildly familiar to one of the newer ones screen hmm...
To be fair i kinda want to play the dark ending one just for the intrigue. you CAN do bad ending if you set it up well, there dose need to be positive component to it but it could easily end up being.
Awww it dose not appear to be avalable at either GoG or steam.
