  • A brilliant film... some think it is Fellini's best film, others think it is the first in a series of great films. Either way it is a must-see film, especially for the performance of Giulietta Masina... something that is at times heart warming and heart breaking... totally deserving of the first ever Academy Ward for best Foreign film.

Simply the greatest film ever made--to date.

It's such a hard and contentious call to call any one film the greatest, but it is definitely one o f the greatest.

I think too it is the greatest movie ever, but not alone. It stays together at least with Forrest Gump and EEAAO (Everything Everwhere All At Once). It shares with them an universality of themes, the fact of being focused of love and family and meaning of life, and diversity. I do not like movier like Citizen Kane, Fellini's 8 1/2 etc...because they are too much pretentious movies where characters talk way too much instead of acting. Don't like it. This is not cinema, this is literature in my opinion. Much better "Le notti di Cabiria", which is quite similar to "La Strada".
What distinguishes this movie from the other is the huge performace by Giulietta Masina, which in my opinion is the best performance ever for a female actor.

@@rcafiero Don't ever compare La Strada to that overrated gimmicky dross Everything Everywhere All At Once.

Great video. I love La Strada. Giulietta Masina is so wonderful. Martin Scorsese also says on the Criterion introduction that if you could only see one Fellini film pre 8 1/2, that it should be La Strada.

Agree completely. Masina's performance is heart-warming and ultimately heart-breaking and is what takes the film to the next level. Scorsese knows film... it's good advice

Thanks Paul. I'm sure you liked the film even more. Although this is my favourite Fellini film, you might also like his next 2 films... Il Bidone and Nights of Cabiria - both with the wonderful Giulietta Masina

Thank God the people who were brought back to life in this film aren't real, otherwise I'd have to go find that guy. Great roll-a coaster emotional ride. I loved it in Italian which gave it an intensive, scary message as it is set after WWII during which there were millions of referees seeking new homes and struggling to survive. The ultra religious undertones and conflicted evil presented by Quinn gave him the image of Satan in the flesh. the female leading lady knocked it out of the park and into the history books. Loved it! On the other side it left a lot of questions concerning their relationship, whether it was a slave master thing, or a abused woman addicted to an abusive man? I plan to see it again, thank you.

Thanks for your thoughts Daniel. I like that there are a lot of open questions, which allow for a number of alternate interpretations. Human relationships are complex, and sometimes conflicted and full of contradictions. It's nice to see a film that doesn't lay it all out on a platter and tie up all those loose ends... like you say, it makes watching it again more satisfying

People still complain of Giulietta over acting and being too 'broad' in her gestures. She said, "What can I do? With this puss of mine, if I raise an eyebrow it is like an earthquake!" So true.

🤣 I love it! Masina is definitely my favorite actress ever... and I can relate to the eyebrow remark 😁

One of the greatest films ever... and, imo, it's not even Fellini's best! _8 1/2_ is top 5 all time for me 😍

I'd rank his three best - la strata, la dolce vita then 8 1/2, but all great films
