    Well either he got it wrong or, more likely, was simplified things. The bacteria that form the basis for those ecosystems get their energy from a process called Chemosynthesis, where energy is extracted from the oxidation of chemicals like hydrogen sulphide and ammonia. The reason they live near the vents is because the water coming out has massive amounts of chemicals dissolved in it. The heat is not important, similar ecosystems found around cold seeps have temps close to the surrounding sea.

    Sorry to out dick you here but they actually get their energy from the chemicals that come out of those vents, not the heat.
