No, that is not what Southern parents want. That's just the setup. The very second, you're back from the honeymoon, actually sooner, they start asking "when are you going to give us some grandkids?"

We.never wanted our girls to get married we wanted them to never leave home we were always happy for them to live at home When they did get married we never ask for grandchildren that was up to them Most grandparents try to make up for what they didn’t do for their children We did everything for our girls so we have nothing to make up for by having grandchildren My oldest is 52 and my youngest is 36 never once’s have we ever ask for grandchildren their in-laws have it should always be up to our children

I was estranged from my family when I got married.
When we reconciled & they found out she was a Yankee, that was not a good reaction.
I did get to claim that I had given them grandchildren first but my sisters & brother put an asterisk on the record because my wife came to the marriage with a daughter & son already.

. My grandmother, who hadn't changed out a grandkid's photo on the shelf in YEARS put the couple photo my first fiance and I had made at our engagement. Two years after he broke it off, THAT was the photo still up for me, when she died...not the one of me graduating highschool, or boot camp, or advanced tech school or any other. 🙄😅 Getting married...THAT'S what counted. I believe that my college graduation also wouldn't have rated shelf space...but my wedding photos would have... even after the divorce. I can actually imagine my first wedding photos AND my wedding photos 22 years ago to my current husband on the shelf TOGETHER.🤣🤣 Diamonds and veils are about all that got the attention of an old school southern grandmother after age 13. You were represented by a 7th or 8th grade photo until engaged or married. You better not pull that "living with" or "simple elopement" nonsense either. No diamond? No veil? You're gonna be 13 the rest of your life. YOUR kids' photos will be next to that 8th grade photo of you... until THEY'RE 13. 😏😁

If you think Southern is bad, try being Irish; Italian; Jewish or Chinese. These folks are amateurs. Being non-Catholics they take it too easily. For a more traditional Catholic there's a year of religious preparation for the couple, longer if one has to convert. The service is in a church and obviously more elaborate. We don't allow divorce. It's one and done. We also expect multiple children, preferably beginning early in the marriage. The reception may involve hundreds of relatives and family friends and go on for a very long time. Then there's often a wedding breakfast the next morning before the honeymoon sendoff. A Chinese American high school friend of my sister's had two complete wedding ceremonies. The first a Catholic ceremony and the second a traditional Chinese ceremony. Same priest at both. Her Chinese wedding dress was red so my sister and the other bridesmaids had to have two completely different outfits. Very complicated. Her mother was like a general commanding all the wedding events and enlisted all the female family friends into her regiment.
And speaking about finances. A Sikh American friend of ours from high school got married to an average American girl. As part of the elaborate ceremony the bride was decked out with all the groom's extended family's gold, some imporged for the ceremony from the Punjab. It was so heavy two of the bridesmaids had to support her so she wouldn't collapse. I never had any idea his family had so much hidden wealth. After the ceremony it all disappeared again. Like I said, these folks are amateurs.

I already told my family that I'm going the adoption route and everyone is actually ok with it! I'm still going to get married one day and all that but not anytime soon. He will have to pass the family test, which I think I'll let my younger brother ( by two year's) fill in for my dad since he's in HEAVEN. RIP DAD, you'll still be apart of everything I do in spirit. I actually can't have kids due to well girl stuff which leads to hormone related seizures ( not all seizures are epilepsy) so adoption is the best route for me. I don't want to disclose anything about my wedding except that my brother will walk me down the aisle while I'm a picture of my dad and the father/daughter dance will be me holding his picture while dancing. I'm not leaving him out of any important moments in my life. I know that anyone lost a parent or both understands.

What they said, in all fairness, was kind of 'meh' to anyone. I am reminded of a story a NASA astronaut told me, he told his parents that he was going into space for the first time and his parents couldn't have cared less because a sibling had told them a week before that they were getting married. His mother, he said, told him that his news wasn't all that important because a wedding trumps anything like that

Over the years I think my Bubbie (Yiddish for grandmother and she was my mom's mom) went from wanting me married to just wanting me to give her great-grandbabies. 😂 She and my mom (who also desperately wanted grandbabies) tried to lure me into it by saying that all of her friends (meaning my Bubbie's friends) would make it rain baby gifts. 😂 Which was very true, if any of them got a new grandkid it was like an entire Bye Bye Baby showed up at your door. I wish I could have granted their wish as they have both passed on, but my health and financial issues just make it impossible.
