For those wondering a mini excavator was stolen and left on some tracks on the Welsh Marshes line near Craven Arms Station. It was hit by a 6 coach train heading South towards Cardiff, if I remember correctly. This did result in one of the units catching fire, however (thankfully) there were no deaths.

    I GOT AN IDEA
Road trains. You take a train, you put wheels on it, road train, like a bus, but longer

The UK did the opposite of this in the 80s, trains made from busses, they were called the Pacers, and they were still operating up until a couple of years ago.

@@epender an articulated bus is two buses stuck together, what I mean is a literal train with separated wagons (5/6) but with road wheels

Would that be likely to be in fact the first Class 150 vehicle to be written off since a couple when they were almost new?

Hit a stolen digger which had been left on the track by some scumbags.

I read that the train operator will have to cancel services because it is now short of trains. One hopes that surplus rolling stock that is being scrapped could be uterlised.

Why on earth is a railway carriage having to be transported by road? Surely it could have been craned on to a railway low loader!

It's not in a fit state to be operated on a mainline railway - considering it was on fire

There are several reasons. As mentioned elsewhere, its size: Trains are built so they just fit within the railways limit. If they were smaller, they should have been bigger to carry more. This means it must be towed & there may be an mechanical issue preventing this, like a broken wheel or seized motor.
Sticking it on a road trailer & having it arrives "when it gets there" is much easier than trying to find a spare path within the timetables without delaying anything else. Even at night, many routes are closed for maintenance.
