Nearly every other build video uses 3D printed parts or entirely painted PVC or “buy this aluminum extrusion”. I appreciate you have genuinely used parts that can be bought at a hardware/general home or craft store. Or something you can get readily available very cheaply from the internet. You have clearly iterated on your previous designs and improved with each one. Nice work! 👍

    • @DIYGene

Thank you, and I agree. I first watched videos to build a light saber then suddenly they go to there 3D printer. Well that’s fine if you have a 3D printer. This was a really fun project although I had someone suggest using a windshield wiper blade for the grips on the hilt and that might be a good idea. Thanks again for watching.

The black thing on the hilt is a leather band, because the lightsaber broke in The Last Jedi, it got fixed and it got that leather band, which is actually brown, not black. There is a Legacy lightsaber, which is found at Galaxy's Edge at Walt Disney World and Disneyland, called "Skywalker Reforged" which has that design.
Edit: Just so you know, the lightsaber originally didn't have that design. The new design reminds me of a football, because of the brown leather around the ignition switch.

Perfectly serviceable stunt prop there! It may not be screen-accurate to the hero prop(s), but it's instantly recognizable as the saber you're trying to capture.. and is probably a good deal more durable than the original hero props. This is actually something you see a lot in film and television production, where the props that are going to be seen up-close are meticulously built, but the ones that stunt men are swinging around in the long shots, and the props carried by extras, thrown across the room, etc.. will be 'good enough to recognize from a distance' but may not be exact.
This saber has the upshot of costing 'tens of dollars' for the handle, Not to mention the most important part.. being something you can build at home over the span of a weekend. This is a great project for learning Saber and Prop building with.. and from there, each one can get better as one goes along.
And I do want to say, as others have said.. kudos to you for pressing forward with your passion for making, even when the tremors try to sideline you. Keep up the awesome work!
And consider making a saber that uses the electronic guts of a goodwill toy saber, to have sound effects!

Are you familiar with 'Neopixel' leds? They alow for the effects of the light slowly going up the blade or flame effects etc. (They put regular LEDs to shame) Maybe next you could make a Neopixel Saber? You have a way of explaining things that I can actually follow. Other youtubers are making Neopixel sabers, but you have to be a master electrician to understand the things they just gloss over.

Great video Gene. Great job on coming out with this so quick. From another video I saw a way to diffuse the LED lights by using clear cellophane wrapping (like from gift baskets) rolled into the tube, but that was with a single bright LED in the hilt instead of the strip. Something to think about for my next build! My two son's are happy with the basic ones I made with a drain extender.
