Aaaaand we just received our Leopard2A7HUs 😁😁😁, and I even worked in their hangars as an electrician with my dad! Also yeah we will take part in the development of the Panther sadly or not sadly just the 120mm gun instead of the 130 will be equiped, but I guess in terms of logistics it was the best decission. The fact that we....well he....that thing that we call Prime Minister announced this on TikTok is just soooo embarassing...like the whole Government but it's politics. So yeah I'm happy to see you cover this subject, you proved my point with it. Also as the wide man said in that announcement the two predator won't go alone to the battlefield as he said "Hiúzt gyártunk..." which means "We produce Lynx" so yeah the battlebuddy of the two MBTs is the KF41 Lynx...which is just a cheaper version of the PUMA but with a really cool hard kill APS system by Rheinmetall called Strikeshield. So yeah the German big cats bring fear to the battlefield since 1942.

@@flummi6966 I'm sorry but I can't agree with you, I mean the Schützenpanzer PUMA and the KF41 Lynx literally use the same 30mm autocannon (MK 30-2/ABM) which can fire proper APFSDS rounds and ATGMs (SpikeLR2). The KF41 has a hard kill APS system while the PUMA has a soft kill one, plus the Lynx can launch UAVs. While the Marder has a 20mm Autocannon (only APDS avaiable for it as far as I know) and MILAN ATGM which is quite old model, but I don't know if it got any modernization. Plus the Lynx has better mobility and way more modern fire control system. Calling the Lynx Marder ++ is like calling the AK-74 Sturmgewhr 44++ or M1 Garand++ or calling the M249 Saw MG42++.

Want to know the best thing about the Leo 2A7? Its not even the most modern verwion of the tank. The Leo2A8 is already here and is being manufactured for many countries like czechia, germany (obviously lol), Norway too i think and some other countries. And it is even more protected than the already good 2A7 variant

Only a little improvement towards the question if the German military will replace the Leopard 2 with the KF51: At the moment it doesnt seem like that because Germany has a joint research with France on a new Tank System. And Although that there have been some news about it having problems and rumors about a possibloe cancelation of the project... I think that as long as the project is running, the Leopard 2 wont be replaced by the KF51. Also the KF51 is somewhat a technology-demonstrator in terms of german military.

More or less, yes. The operational version of KF-51 might not replace Leo, but in Rheinmetall's eyes, it's their bid for future sales.

3:30 The Americans were probably never really interested in a license production of the Leo 2, at least not the ones in charge of evaluating the trial.
In the 1976 trial the XM-1 met only 48 out of the 77 rated requirements, whereas the Leo 2 met 61. However several high-ranking US Officers, who were involved in the developement of the XM-1, favoured it over the Leo 2AV and the requirements were put into categories such that the XM-1 would "win" more categories than the Leo 2AV.
Its thin armor mobility is nullified in an age with full recon and cheap explosive drones from above at any part of the frontline

It's comical that the Hungarian government spends more than $100,000,000 every year on propaganda, and they still can't make a proper announcement 😂

2 quick corrections, in the german army the 2a5 which is a fancy modernised 2a4 is the most common and the kampfwertsteigerung introducing all the electronics was whilst extremely expensive a must have. It basically gave the leopard a video game like interface that not just showed where all your friends are and what they are doing, but also gave the ability of communicating identified targets in real time with each other thus enabeling maneuvers such as flanking and positioning to be 100% more accurate and faster. Also worth noting is the KF51 which is still unclear if its ever gonna enter service with the bundeswehr, however certain systems such as the capability to launch and control drones for the tank commander will be standardised in future leopard series tanks due to its proven necessity in recent modern warfare (ukraine). So to say, the leopard and its similar tanks like the KF51 are in some way a test platform that trials new technology for the rest of NATO to then either adapt to their own tanks or purchase upgrades for their existing leopard tanks.
PS: Great video, factual, unbiased maybe a bit short and missing some points such as how the leopard 2a4 needs a well trained crew to face modern threats (see turkeys "operation" in syria).
Great video, Panzi, just a small correction - or addition - at the end. The KF-51 Panther currently isn't the tank Germany aims to replace the Leopard 2 with. The Leopard 3 currently runs under the project named MGCS - Main Ground Combat System. It's a joint project of Germany and France and should not only replace the Leo 2 but also the Leclerc.
I have a lot of doubts that project would win against the KF51 Panther.
Then again I also thought the M8 project would win against the M10 Booker.
Then again (again) everytime France and Germany work on somthing together they always end up parting ways and doing whatever thy want (Leo 1 and AMX 30 vibes).
It's just speculation on my part. I was just discussing Rheinmetall's future vehicles and where that fits in. In all likelihood, bits of pieces of things will come together and make the next Gen tank eventually
Mgcs is more like a program to figure what they want and brainstorm about what works/doesn't.
There are SO many variations of the Leopard-2 that it's almost impossible to give an overview of them. Basically, you say what you want, and Rheinmetall and KMW will try to put it together for you from stock parts. Obviously within reason of technological constraints but after that it's more or less a question of budget.

The Swedes didn't upgrade them. It was a German upgrade the Swedes bought. And their Leopard 2A4 is also called Stridsvagn 121.

It's supposedly a 2A7+ with Trophy APS. Although, the 2A8 more or less looks the same.

Leopard 2A8 is a Leopard 2A7V with Trophy and in some cases a FLW200 RWS.
There is no new designed turret and chassis. Its the same as Leo2A7V.
And Leo2A7V is an A7. Here major changes happened with new composite armor etc, but still its a conversion of A6.
You might confuse it with KF-51.
But KF-51 is a Leo2A4 with add on armor and a turret conversion.

Leopard 2 AV was tested against the XM-1 and lost.
Actually not. In the 1977 trials the Leopard 2AV met 61 out of the 77 rated requirements, the XM1 prototype met only 48. XM1 was chosen because the Americans adjusted the weighting of the categories in a way that the XM1 was chosen.
In fact the Leopard 2 won every trial it was ever put in against the M1. The US, Sweden and Greece.
@@jonny2954 And was overweight compared to XM-1 and cost double. Also Leopard didn’t beat XM-1 by a lot.
@@ColonelAckerson117 Requirements were changed so a domestic product wins the tender. It's a common tactic not just by the US DoD when it comes to procuring foreign equipment. Also happened in 2013 with the Bradley replacement.
According to the Armys own experts a certain foreign IFV had 28% higher survivability, 103% higher lethality and 22% higher mobility than the Bradley and beat all other contenders of the contest. In fact it even beat the theoretical capabilities of the US' own next generation Ground Combat Vehicle 10+ years before it could've entered service. It was essentially 15 to 20 years ahead of US IFV development.
However the vehicle was foreign so they cancelled the entire replacement program.
However the documentation is public.
What is not so public is the fact the US wanted disclosure of IP on the mine protection plate on that IFV because they couldn't believe how effective it was - to then use it on their own vehicles without paying for it. The manufacturer denied of course, for understandeable reasons.
The US DoD likes to sabotage itself.
@@jonny2954 I the case of Leopard vs XM-1 all data is available. Leo2 was marginally better, but late for trial and very overweight. It’s an urban legend, that Leo would have won.

Great efforts were made to keep it under covers. German officials recieved a gag order to minimize public outcry regarding the trials, they even threatened to cancel a planned west german AWACS procurement. To calm things down the US initially considered buying 500 Leopard 2AV tanks for USAREUR. A lot of effort after a trial that had a 'clear winner', isn't it?
The US Government Accountability Office (GAO) concluded in its report on the US Army’s evaluation of the Leopard 2AV, that letting the same officers that had been involved in the development of the Abrams interpreting/rating the trial results was a mistake.
And not to forget Leopard 2 prototype number 7 which the US had bought earlier influencing XM1 development. They literally copied things, much to the dismay of Kraus Maffei.
Urban legend? Yes and no. It's certain someone wants to make people believe it's an urban legend.
