My Mom died a couple of weeks ago. I held her hand when she died. This song means so much to me... Turn me loose, from your hands. Let me fly to distant lands. Over green fields, trees and mountains. Flowers and forest fountains. Thank you, Elton for this song. It got me through this very difficult time.
@@slb2461 Unfortunately I missed that stream and now I'm desperately trying to find it. Do you mind sending it to me? I'm willing to pay for it if you could help me 🙂
I’ve always felt he was his best on “Tumbleweed Connection”. He was clearly in love with his craft, and hadn’t yet decided to become a hit machine, let alone Captain Fantastic.
I’ve loved him since I was nine in 1972. My friend said her brother found this great new singer. She held up the Honky Chateau album. I saw his eyes in that cover picture and fell in love. And I made eye contact with him for about 10 seconds as an usher walked me down to the stage at a concert of his in ‘92. I was overwhelmed. I finally looked into those eyes…
Elton once said that this was one of the first songs he and Bernie felt truly proud of. And the lyrics feel incredibly personal - what a great way to open up a concert where the ensemble is just him and a piano! There's a definite feeling of serenity as the words set in. Multiple talents merged into one!
I was just a 7 year old boy and I could love this unforgettable song... ...Elton John was that time the most important singer ever for me. He was great and had the poetry glowing in his textes too.
OH...MY... GOD! Just listened to this again with my eyes closed and recently grieving my mother’s death due to Covid, this was THE most beautiful song I could’ve heard at this time. 💜💜💜
Turn me loose from your hands Let me fly to distant lands Over green fields, trees and mountains Flowers and forest fountains Home along the lanes of the skyway For this dark and lonely room Projects a shadow cast in gloom And my eyes are mirrors Of the world outside Thinking of the ways That the wind can turn the tide And these shadows turn From purple into grey For just a skyline pigeon Dreaming of the open Waiting for the day He can spread his wings And fly away again Fly away, skyline pigeon, fly Towards the dreams You've left so very far behind Fly away, skyline pigeon, fly Towards the dreams You've left so very far behind Let me wake up in the morning To the smell of new-mown hay To laugh and cry, to live and die In the brightness of my day I wannna hear the pealing bells Of distant churches sing But most of all, please free me From this aching metal ring And open out this cage towards the Sun For just a skyline pigeon Dreaming of the open Waiting for the day He can spread his wings And fly away again Fly away, skyline pigeon, fly Towards the dreams You've left so very far behind Fly away, skyline pigeon, fly Towards the dreams You've left so very, so very far behind
Seen him in the 70’s 80’s 90’s 2000. This concert is fantastic. EJ raw with only his piano. Sings effortlessly pitch perfect. With just him and the piano you can hear the genius of his piano playing. The chord changes are insane. Cannot believe how good this footage is.
Ahead at his time and born to win, Sir Elton John has been the soundtrack of my entire life since 1972 when l heard Crocodile Rock for the 1st time. Since then, he's been saving my life. Blessings to him cos'he's still standing after all this time don't you agree ?! Our Rocket Man.
I fell in love with Elton the first time I heard Levon in 71 when I was 9. I always wondered why "he shot me Levon" until I received the LP for my 13th BDay in 75 and read the lyrics. BTW, also received Captain Fantastic and many others from him.
I remastered and Produced this re-edit/remaster in 1996 for John Reid Enterprises in 1996. My name? Henry Scott-Irvine. Thirty years of freelancing as Archive TV Producer for Elton working on eight documentaries and being his Archive Producer in 1995-1996 and again 2008 as well as Producer of Elton At 50 - this Performance I remastered and put together in 1976 from camera parts and Radio Clyde audio is THE BEST moment in Elton's entire live performing career. Its majestic! Some background. John Reid - Elton's then manager - nearly bought The Edinburgh Playhouse Theatre from Edinburgh District Council who were going to sell it off for demolition in 1976. So he ran Edinburgh's first ever Rock Festival there. STV came along to video tape Elton's first Solo Show since 1970. But more importantly the first 30 minutes went out across 'Scotland only' on TV and to New York via satellite. Groundbreaking for its day you could turn down the mono awful TV sound and get Stereo Sound on Radio Clyde (Glasgow) and Radio Forth (Edinburgh). And so we had the first ever Colour Stereo TV Transmission of a Solo Concert ever Broadcast via Satellite to the USA. It was a moment in TV History. It is also Elton's finest two hour concert of all time! Never equalled IMHO In 1996 i found the 6 camera tapes. Quad master 2 inch outside broadcast camera masters of the entire show at STV in Cowcaddens Glasgow. A journey to Radio Forth found no audio tapes there. But Radio Clyde had the Pristine stereo quarter inch radio broadcast master tape of the entire two hour show. George Foulgham the audio engineer at Ramilles St St Soho London was a BAFTA winning sound man and he oversaw the stretch and squeezing of a stretched tape as we inched it through remastering process SLOWLY minute per minute - where damaged and distorted - back to Pristine and as you hear it here. Clipped in documentaries I worked on such as Classic Albums, The Elton John Story for ITV and The South Bank show. The entire show appeared online for three days only a month ago and this is where this said opener to the concert emanates. Enjoy. And weep!
This is really interesting! - So glad, Elton made this quality available for us now; an outstanding performance of all these beautiful songs! You know, last year I reconstructed a 2 hour full version of this tape, as well: from the best available clips on youtube, stretching the acceptably sounding radio audio track to match the video clips, similar to your re-editing work I guess. Most of it was still mono or very blurred, but nevertheless a touching document of this evening, plus nice jokes by Elton! Too bad TH-cam blocked it after 100k views, I thought this gem was gone, but here it is better than before! (Unfortunately much of Elton's talking is missing here ...)
Wow! Thank you so much for sharing your story! Did you remaster any other concert films for Elton? I'm thinking about Hollywood Bowl, or Dodger Stadium :)
I believe he actually sang "Skyline Pigeon" for Ryan White at his funeral. Maybe he sang "Your Song" as well? There is video of him singing "Skyline Pigeon" at the funeral on youtube though. Poor kid.
My God, this is incredible. I saw Elton in Tuscaloosa in 1976 on the Rock of the Westies tour. Greatest concert I ever saw, and I saw a lot. I only wish I could have been at this one, where its just Elton and his piano. Words fail.
Oh this precious song. Left me with memories. At High School in Brasil our English teacher team us up to translate a song a present to the class and the girl I was sign up with wanted to translate The Carpters Sing, Sing a Song because it was easy but I wanted Skyline Pigeon so with had a fight, separated and she did her song and did my choice. Love this song to this day. Marvelous Elton John.
what can i say about this masterpiece?thank you so much Elton!the only thing that reminds me of the past are these type of music!meaningful!!each person here must have some feeling in this one!

Um cantor e músico incomum, em meio aos homens comuns. Obrigado, Sir Elton, por nos deixar muito ouro em forma musical, neste mundo ainda cheio de incompreensões. Obrigado, por tanta vida! 🙏🏻✨🌟👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I thought of this song when my son was buried. I'll never forget it. I was driving us one day, just cruising, which he loved and this came on. I said when I die, think of this song and think of me. He said oh Mom, you will outlive me. I just chuckled and said don't be silly. He was killed a few years later and now that's all I think of when I hear it.
In all the years of watching live Elton videos, going to few concerts, I've never heard one piano mistake. You can hear a wrong note in the third chord of the intro at 0:08. I point this out to demonstrate his amazing musicianship. Nobody's perfect... but Elton's pretty darn close!

You've given me an entirely new perspective for this song 😢❤
I had a similar experience recently with my closest loved one and this song.
God bless your mother!🙏🙏
If this is not vintage Elton John, then I don't know what is. Superb.
Agreed.
no autotune, just him and his piano. What incredible talent.
A lil bit of blow 😂
No wonder he never needed more than one take in the studio. He is always note perfect.
I have this full show too.. GREAT quality - been waiting for not years but DECADES!

He was at his absolute peak at this time in 1976. Perfect voice, perfect everything.

@@Karmakatt6 If only the full version with the in-between chat and whatnot were still available😐
I respect your opinion.....but his voice became a bit more seasoned by the early 80's.
Agree
I’ve always felt he was his best on “Tumbleweed Connection”. He was clearly in love with his craft, and hadn’t yet decided to become a hit machine, let alone Captain Fantastic.
What a voice. Absolutely irreplaceable talent. ❤
His voice was so great during this time. So simple.
IT WAS BY FAR HIS BEST!
I. Thought that also♡ I am 57 yrs young. I have loved him since I was. 14♡
I'm 33 and have loved him since when I was 5, when my papa used to listen to him in the car.

Captain Fantastic at the height of his awesomeness god what a song and performance
Fantastic! I paid a singer and pianist to perform this piece at my husband’s memorial - just beautiful!
How wonderful.

I was privileged to see Elton three times in the 1980s. He is absolutely the greatest live performer I have ever seen.
This is my all-time favorite Elton song, even more than Daniel or Your Song. Such a beautiful, melancholy song!
The man is a musical genius
THIS is how I like to remember Elton. Not now.
The song is belongs to him, only to him. 🙌
Sung 43 days before I was born. Perfect. Will be song 2 at my funeral.
He was great. I saw him in 1973 in Manchester, a great performer. He had a pure voice.
Ele ainda é ótimo, sua voz continua linda, ele ainda vive.....
I know he is but his voice isn’t the same as it was when he sang this song.
What a performance. Absolutely perfect, every note. Such warmth and feeling in the voice. One of the best singers of all time. Without a doubt.

Elton John, simplesmente uma emoção, a trajetória dele me faz ver que a vida vale a pena, ele é único nesse estilo!
Turn me loose from your hands
Let me fly to distant lands
Over green fields, trees and mountains
Flowers and forest fountains
Home along the lanes of the skyway
For this dark and lonely room
Projects a shadow cast in gloom
And my eyes are mirrors
Of the world outside
Thinking of the ways
That the wind can turn the tide
And these shadows turn
From purple into grey
For just a skyline pigeon
Dreaming of the open
Waiting for the day
He can spread his wings
And fly away again
Fly away, skyline pigeon, fly
Towards the dreams
You've left so very far behind
Fly away, skyline pigeon, fly
Towards the dreams
You've left so very far behind
Let me wake up in the morning
To the smell of new-mown hay
To laugh and cry, to live and die
In the brightness of my day
I wannna hear the pealing bells
Of distant churches sing
But most of all, please free me
From this aching metal ring
And open out this cage towards the Sun
For just a skyline pigeon
Dreaming of the open
Waiting for the day
He can spread his wings
And fly away again
Fly away, skyline pigeon, fly
Towards the dreams
You've left so very far behind
Fly away, skyline pigeon, fly
Towards the dreams
You've left so very, so very far behind
