Dancing down the street, with the fire hydrants in the back. 😂😂
that chair was squeaking for dear life 😂😂
It’s not that people are saying “why more black stuff?”, it’s more like, “why remake THIS amazing movie? Why not make a new movie that gets people to think? like The Color Purple did”.
🎯🎯🎯
It’s not a remake. It’s the Broadway version being brought to the big screen. Broadway version been around for like 20 years.
He said black suffering, if I heard him correctly
The musical already existed. I've seen the musical at the Orpheum years ago. They literally just put the musical on film. They didn't remake anything.
This wasn't a remake. It was the film version of the Broadway play (just like *The Producers* ). I saw the musical back in 2019 when they came to the Kennedy Center. It was phenomenal and I hoped they would bring it to the big screen so more people can see it. Even back then, I paid $200 for my seat (and I got a discount because I perform there often). Not everyone can afford these expensive plays, so bringing it to the movies was perfection.
Tony reenacting that musical was the funniest thing I've seen in a minute😂😂😂😂😂
😂😂 Facts!! 😂 😂
That shoulder action took me out!😆
@@sj4life75 😂😂😂😂😂🕺🏿🕺🏿🕺🏿🕺🏿
Where did he reenact the movie on? I can't find the video?!
@@jessicaA62618 we're referring to this video where he's talking about different scenes. He didn't actually reenact the movies.
The wiz was like going to a amusement park without leaving your house.
Teraji was predictably great, I mean does she ever miss on screen, Daniel shined as usual but Fantasia was a revelation. I remember her American Idol audition and wow, what a difference in personality, poise, and charisma. even if you're not sold on musicals, it's worth seeing it for Fantasia's performance alone. You can feel her misery as events unfold and her moment of revelation when she realizes she doesn't have to just take things will give you chills. i'm not a cryer, and I didn't even realize i was crying until my daughter who was with me asked if I was ok. By the time Fantasia sings "I'm here" you're ready to hear her assert herself finally. My God I wasn't ready.
I have seen the new version and 1. I like that we saw Celie mom, their loving relationship and how Celie learned to sew. 2. I liked how Sophia wasn't scared permanently like in the original 3. I like how there was redemption and forgiveness in the end for all including Albert!
All this happend in The original movie also, But Everything was more subtle it's not just not all in your face.
We cannot forget Colman Domingo and Deon Cole their performances were amazing too along with Corey Hawkins, Lewis Gossett Jr. Jon Batiste and David Alan Grier too.
R.I.P. to the Smooth Jazz Review chair 😂
Lol your chair noises scared the heck out of my cat! 😂
"Rocky picture horror" is a great musical that's slept on
Once you understand that the director’s goal with this musical was to give Celie an imagination, the musical aspects make sense.
Coleman said to notice Mister walks around with a banjo but never had his own song. That was powerful. Think of all he carried inside and how it made him a horrible person.
The cinematography, choreography, location etc were all excellent!! Danielle was absolutely phenomenal!
Great review, Tony. I loved the original film, but the broadway musical has a really special place in my heart so I was super excited for this one.
3:00 whole rundown sent meee 😭😂🤌🏼
Little shop of horror was my favorite musical too!! My brother said the only reason why this remake happened was because Oprah wanted to get off house arrest 👀🤣🤣🤣
Omg!!!😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
LMAO😂 bro you the natural incarnation of hilarious I've been a fan since I first heard skibby paps😂
I appreciate that
I agree with Tony's view on musicals 100%. It's definitely not my first genre choice, but I did want to support this movie, so I'm glad I caught this review. The original will forever be hard to beat, so I'm sure this new one won't hold the same place in my heart, but I'll check it out at some point. It made Tony cry then I already know it's going to get me just like the original, no how many times I see it.
Tony ate those dance moves up 😆 and shoutout to the chair for the feature.
I agree! I didn't really watch trailers or anything (because we all saw the first one) so I had no clue it was a musical. I almost cried at the beginning like "how did I let my mom talk me into watching a sad musical on Christmas Day". But it definitely got better and I agree that it was more hopeful. It didn't completely ruin my happy Christmas mood. Loved Albert's pants 😅.
Lets go Tone. Preciate you. Finally feeling normal again with these reviews.
We missed you Tony!!! Great review and the squeaky chair was a bonus 😂😂😂
Yasssss we love little shop of horror ! Definitely on my top 5
I think this is my favorite movie review...between the chair dance moves and the chair squeaking, I'm here for it all!!! 🤣🤣🤣
Tasia was super thicc in that clothing-of-the-time. A+ on that front.
I love that Celie speaking up for herself rejuvenated Sophia.
That chair need to be dipped in Kenté oil 🤣😂🤣😂 I almost cackled loud AF at work with the chair musical. Lol
Great understanding of how to deliver an honest and unbiased review. The color purple is my mom’s favorite movie, she can and will recite the whole script wether you like it or not. I haven’t seen the new one yet however, I’m sure I will be forced to soon enough 🤦♀️ Side note, I’m starting a go fund me for some oil for that chair.
not a go fund me 😆😆
😂😂😂
Oil for the chair😂😂😂
😂😂😂 on the go fund me for the chair!!!
I’m going through it at work. Seeing Tone with the Color purple movie review is a real bright spot for me today 💖💖💖
I thought you were going to say (CATs) were one of your favorite musicals🤣
The 5-6-7-8 had me 😂😅😄😆😆😎
Excellent review! I agree. I definitely understood the storyline better (much more clarity) this go round. I was skeptical at first because I usually hate when they remake classics ...but I'm glad I went to see it. They did a fantastic job!
That chair squeak!😂😂
I Love the original movie and have watched it often. I honestly thought this was going to be too much. Im so glad they turned it into a musical. Thought there was gonna be extreme singin and dancing when there didnt need to be. But it was perfect! That cast was outstanding! I was super ecstatic with the ending because thank GOD I didnt see it on social media and enjoyed the changes and updates that were done.
Why would Color Purple The Musical remove the only "musical" scene from the first movie? I moved my popcorn out the way and was ready to get on my feet for the "God is trying to tell you something" scene and all I got was a lil fizzle.
I was ready to go the second I realized they damn near got rid of my favorite scenes or watered the majority of my favorite scenes down
Tony, try watching “The Greatest Showman”. I feel the same as you do about musicals in general, but I was all in with that movie from the beginning.
Yes!! 🎉
The greatest showman for sure!!!
Definitely!
I liked the movie and understood it would lean more to the play. Danielle Brooks was my fave part. My only holding points...
1. Would have liked a sprinkle more background on Mister
2. Wanted "God is Trying To Tell You Something" to be a full number versus a smaller reprisal. And I had hoped Tamela would be part of it.
P.S. I didn't even clock H.E.R. even though I knew she was in it and I had to double take on Ciara...until she hit that soft run. Then I was sure
I like all three variations of the story Color Purple. I recommend that everyone who love the movies read the book. I agree with Tony the iconic moments from the original movie does not translate the same in the musical movie. I wished the dinner scene, and the church scene had the same impact as the original movie. I did enjoy the Harpo and Sophia songs Hell No and Working.
Tony is cold as hell 😂 So by his logic, he must hate the original Annie......Is so, daaaaamn Tony. That's crazy.
Both movies were good in its own right. I enjoyed both
Remakes are quick cash grabs for the studios. WB was banking on the popularity of the musical and nostalgia of the 1985 movie.
Do NOT touch or change that chair! That’s a signature staple to the reviews!
Tony's thumbnail is wild lols
TONY'S REVIEWS ARE A RIOT! FUNNY-GOOD VIDEO!😁😎
Yo this whole episode had me rolling and repeating multiple moments throughout! Tony is just too funny.
The Greatest Showman?! The Blues Brothers is iconic
First of off, I really appreciate that you stated that you have a prejudice against musical, and I get that. Then you put that aside and then got the TRUE sprit of the movie. Good Review.
I saw "The Color Purple" 💜 on Christmas Day!🎷🎷🎷🎷🎷
That chair!!!!🤣😭💖
Right I don’t like musicals either but I enjoyed this one… it was a lot of songs though. What I enjoyed most were the visuals. The way the film was shot was pretty amazing.
Tony's thumbnails are legendary at this point
I think they took too much out. For example, when Celie spit in Mista's dads water...We didn't feel the same hatred for him as we did in the 1st movie and book. I didn't feel any hatred for him in the musical. He was a non-factor.
That's true. I didn't hate him as much. I enjoyed seeing Lou but it wasn't the same. Shoulda had her spit in Misters water. 😅
I am a huge fan of the Color Purple, and I was so impressed with this new take. I loved all the actors and the songs were fantastic. I was very moved.
I thought I was the only person who felt that way about musicals. Please don’t start singing in the middle of a conversation.
Thank you Tony! I love your reviews but it was the chair using its phase-seto notes for me! So thank you.
Lmao
An all time favorite on the thumbnail 😂 too funny!
Idlewild is my favorite
I love your movie reviews! I could really see you doing commentary on You Tube on pop culture, that would be great.
😂😂😂 the chair. I love it
Cinderella with Brandy is probably one of the best musicals!
What about Polly? Polly was great too!
Carmen Jones (1954), The Wiz and Funny Girl (Barbara Streisand) best musicals hands down!
That is my holy Trinity of musicals too even with the honorable mention
Loved the original. This one was okay to me. I didn't like how it was shot. They tried to keep the play feel which to me closed off the scenes. Like one of the scenes they kept tight on Ceilie cutting off at her legs and it looked weird. I kept thinking they are on a whole soundstage, why are they shooting like they are limited like a play?
I also do not like musicals and originally didnt think the Color Purple needed a remake. However because the new film is more joyful, I enjoyed it more than the original.
Dang Tony put some WD-40 on dat chair. Had me thinking D Bo was coming
That chair needs some W.D.40 Tony...😆😆😆
Your list of top 3 favorite musicals is almost the same as mine. But instead of the Blues Brothers, my third one is the Gene Wilder version of Willy Wonka.
I do not like musicals often but I really enjoyed this version on the strength of the musical performances as well as the dramatic parts. Not a weak link in the cast and Fantasia is excellent as Celie. The drama hit harder in the original but this musical version is more optimistic and enjoyable. The ending is beautiful. On another note, that squeak in the chair was too funny. Where's the WD-40? LOL.
I wasn't looking for this laughter from this review!😂😂😂😂😂Them shoulders!
Yo that chair wild 😂😂😂
What about Grease? John Travolta and Olivia Newton John. ❤️ my favorite!
every time you said 5,6,7,8 something hilarious ensued 😂
Great review, I thought the movie was wonderful, the scenery was vibrant. The actors are really good, loved the musical numbers. Fantasia, Danyelle and Taraji really delivered on their singing. I loved the original but I loved this one more.
Totally agree with your review❤🎉
"Streets of Fire" was a dope musical from 1984 with Stoney Jackson
Omg the chair Tony 😂😂😂😂
I felt the same way bro. Why the hell did Sealy kids look older than she did? 😂😂😂
I have such a damn attachment to the original. I can't even bring myself to watch the new one 😂
I love your movie reviews. Thought provoking, funny and "unbiased"❤
I would give it 4 1/2 saxophones. I agree it was more hopeful and the music numbers are what made me cry because they were well placed and tastefully done. The younger versions of Celie and Nettie did a wonderful job, H.E.R and Ciara were so engrossed in their roles i didn’t recognize them at first. I like musicals in general but I’m with you on that second west side story was a no for me, but Rent was phenomenal televised.
That chair is strugglin 😂
Tony is hilarious 😂😂😂😂
You nailed it with the three musicals that I would watch
Great review. I agree that some of the scenes weren't as hard hitting when the movie started. They rushed to get to some of the iconic lines/scenes in the first 1/3 of the movie. It kind of took away from the weight of the themes that were being laid out.
Fantasia did great with the table scene when she picks up the knife. I always get excited at that part and they had the right energy. I definitely understood it more and you are right about the joy throughout. Definitely a twist on the original that left you feeling heavy even with a happy ending.
10:09 goddamn 😂😂 dying screeches
Love the Wiz! Love Little Shop!
Tony doing the fire hydrant dance 😂😂
My ears bled 🩸 on the chair spin😖😭🤣
Wasn't going to watch it since im not a fan of musicals either. Buuuutttt i trust ya Tony. I'll give it a chance lol
Great review! You are the best, Man🎯
I loved both movies. Your review was great. 😊 I agree that this version was more hopeful. And both of my eyeballs were leaking during the final scene too. 😭😂
Great Review!
Tony you’re the GOAT at what you do 😂😂❤.
You named the only 3 musicals I like and can tolerate. I already seen the Color Purple, tho I like the actresses and actors I'm in no rush to see it.
Tony Baker, whether or not you like musicals, I am putting my foot down and instructing you to watch *The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas* with Dolly Parton and Burt Reynolds. *I PROMISE you will love it!!!!* That is my all time favorite. It is crazy and fun, the music is phenomenal, the dancing is great, the governor of Texas will have you hollering!!! 🤣😅😂😆
Yesss.
Ok Tony! I am so surprised. 😊 i did enjoy it for the most part.
I agree with your 4 saxophone rating 🎷🎷🎷🎷
I loved the original and I loved this one. I agree this one was more hopeful throughout. The performances were great and fit into what was going on instead of just having random songs that don't seem to fit. I agree some scenes didn't hit as hard as the original. But it was an amazing movie.
the chair hit a note 😂
Oh you would probably like Chicago. It's the least musical musical to me. It's not cheesy at all, it's more a cool story with little concerts dispersed throughout it. It's not random breaking into song in the middle of the street lol.
Lovedddd the Wiz. Hey, I like the Sound of Music.
