the perfect theme for a top list coming from two of the hobbies most informative people. so many of these are in my overall top games list, thank you for the deep dive!
🙏 Thank you so much!
I was wondering if Trickerion was going to make your list. It's a perfect pick for #1! The rules explanation takes a while, but it is necessary to understand the ruleset before you start the game. I was thoroughly engaged in the game the entire time.
Hahaha so heavy! Yes to engagement, the expansion adds more complexity for sure
This was great! I have several of these on the list - mostly the Lacerda games. Thanks for this vid, it was nice to see you two chatting about the heavier end of things!
Awesome! Yes we are looking forward to hurt our brain sometimes lolol
great informed video. didnt saw any heavy board games rated video, so that is great. like everything you do. keep that. have a great day.
Thank you for visitng friend :)
Love the list and the conversation. The first complex game we played also felt super complex 🤣
Haha that is true!
Good list. More recent Lacerda Weather Machine is up there too. Probably between Kanban and Lisboa. Along with the normal Lacerda action economy, there's a more opaque theme making it harder to digest.
Yes we still need to play that! Oh right, sounds like it should be on the list!
great list. not sure through the ages is really that much to it. Was surprised how back you had TI4 but I think that it is probably the heaviest on your list and that sometimes leads to it not getting to the table a lot. But its easily my number one. I have GAIA higher as well. Was surprised that eclipse did not make an appearance (or maybe I missed it?). But always enjoy your lists!
Thanks so much. We rate it by the heaviest. And we haven't played Eclipse :D
Perseverance Episode 2 is heavier than 1, but for me it still left me wanting more as I really love my Mindclash trilogy of Trickerion-Anachrony-Cerebria and Perseverance 1-2 just did not measure up to that crunchy level of gameplay I expected.
Aha yes we figured it's heavier. You must be excited for Episode 3 coming out hehe.
Love this list. I recently played Frostpunk. I think it's placement on this list is well deserved. There's a lot to hold in your head at once. The rules teach is a heavy load. Once you know the game, it flows. But yeah, a steep learning curve. I played 3-player and we won...right down to the wire and 8 hours of game play (including the teach).
Stella, your comment (around 32:10) is part of the reason why the BGG ratings are not a perfect science. I think we all have experienced the feeling that a game is light vs heavy or somewhere in between as being utterly subjective, based on our gaming experience. A perfect scale would rate a game more objectively, not as easy to do. I try to approach it from the perspective of an average person, not a seasoned gamer, average intelligence, assuming some ability to solve puzzles and do basic math without assistance.
(Love your videos and video editing. I always enjoy the banter, the graphics, and the tangents. Stella, I caught a glimpse of you at Gen Con through CGE's lens while Ray was live streaming. Hope you enjoyed all of it!)
Front and heavy load Frostpunk lol. Well done to your victory :)
Thank you for mentioning that. It's very subjective in terms of lightness, some are more familiar with certain mechanism, and that's okay.
Hahaha I video bomb that, I just happened to be there at the right time and saw behind whats happening with Tony's hair dye hahahaha.
Thank you for the visit as always Stacie, and sharing that with us and the rest of the community
If you haven't played them, yet...High Frontier 4 All, Tindaya, and most 18xx games made me hurt in some way or another.
Sounds about right there :)
Pax series!
Lignum, second edition, is one of the heaviest games I've played and I've playes a good amount of the ones on this list. The timing combined with planning future actions that have to be done perfectly is very difficult, and the game is just tight over all. If you enjoy heavy euro's, give it a look.
Ah yes Lignum. We played it in one of the early game days. True, it's so brain burning!
i am always surprised that most of the board game channels put Gaia Project over Terra Mystica. Why is that? I am terribly upset about it :D In Gaia Project there is no area control, which makes the experience more opaque imo. I miss something there. Terry Mystica is my favourite game of all time, i just can not understand why it does not have more love from the gurus..... it blows my mind really 😆
Because Gaia is a much better game overall.
@@jacobpilazzo3311 I actually think both should be on this list. love them both for the two above reasons. Terra great catan like area control mechanism and GAIA just has a lot to offer
Lol. Gaia is more complex because of the movement bit is more precise. I dont remember it being that overly complex. Terra Mystica we like, as well as Terra nova. Can't wait to try Age of Innovations!
Terra Nova is very good easier to table as well!@@MeepleUniversity
Most euro gamers prefer GP over TM due to TM's tighter economy and cutthroat mapa fight.
Gamers are becoming soft. They can't stand any negative Interaction.
Spirit Island has a 4.06 weight rating on BGG. That would be near the top of my list. Bitoku's weight is surprisingly below 4, but I consider that a heavy game and it would be near the top of my list, as well.
Yes Spirit Island almost made it! We still yet to play Bitoku! Different games definitely has different complexity level for each person!
I've been struggling to get Lacerda games to the table so The Gallerist and Escape Plan are on the chopping block. I still have Kanban EV, On Mars and reluctantly Lisboa (my husband likes that one) but they don't get as nearly as much play as other games. I enjoy Panamax ;)
It depends on the gaming group too. Those heavy games are needing a lot of time to learn and a bit of brain burning. It's like doing brain marathon lol. Panamax isn't that heavy I think heheh, glad you enjoy that too.
Also new info, Great Western Trail NewZealand we have ;P and it's heavier than the other two...I think :)
I agree with most of these picks, but I would have rated Coffee Traders, Gaia Project and Kanban higher. Once you play it, Weather Machine might make your list!
Great banter, as always, you two!
Ah yes, especially Kanban hahaha. Weather Machine, hope we'll play one day. THanks so much for visting and saying hello!
Stella
Great video and discussion. Perseverance Episode 2 is a significant step up from Episode 1. Imho a much better game as a result. If you liked the idea of Episode 1 but were a bit underwhelmed because there wasn't enough going on, then it's worthwhile to try Episode 2.
Thank you, that's as we thought about Perseverance Ep. 2. I heard Ep. 3 is going to be slightly easier.
Iam looking for a heavy game with lots of interaction mostly for 2 players. What about pax renaissance 2nd edition?
Hmm I dont believe we played Pax Renaissance sorry. We found Anachrony is still good and with lots of interaction with Anachrony
@@MeepleUniversityFractions of Time adds another layer of Interaction? Because the base game is multiplayer solitarie!
@@joaoantunes6858 Lots of puzzle in the first game, but I guess it's the nature of worker placement
I completely agree about Pipeline.
Haha thank you. Such a mind bending game lolol.
Stella
voidfall.
Great video! What about all card games? Every card can have their own rules. A lot burnier on your brain if you ask me.
Ooh which one? One that we talked about is Arkwright the card game - that one is pretty heavy.
Coffee Traders... we were going to try it on TTS. I liked the general idea. I read the manual. I recoiled back in horror. I asked the others, they all said the same, so we ended up not trying it.
I will try it on a table if somebody can explain it to me, but I can help but think this was harder than it should just because. There are too many convoluted steps and abstract hops to jump through that have no relationship with the theme.
It's not impossible except the Arabica track isn't very thematic. It is a somewhat unique game though with the phases and mechanisms. At the core it's area control + contract fulfillment.
The Coffee Traders Rulebook is notoriously opaque. But, it is my all time favorite game! Watching some play through videos may help… lots of fiddley rules, but they are all there for a good reason to balance the game at different player counts.
Ah yes, lots of rules on that one, lol to the recoiled experience. If it's any help we have the how to play video that explains it in complete but concise th-cam.com/video/rSRfE0hS9mc/w-d-xo.html
@@MeepleUniversity I'll give it a view. Now the problem is going to be getting the scattered players back :P Me and the guy that proposed it may give it a go, we didnt like the manual but still are curious. The less "heavy friendly" players we had, those are gone, and probably best for them, they will not like it even if the actual play is better than what is in the manual.
@@jesuscoutofandino6280 bwahahaha true that. Hope you can enjoy better next time. Maybe play with with drinking coffee? :)
Strawberry ice cream, yes!!!
Haha, thank you!
Imperial Struggle was...a struggle for us :) Founders of Gloomhaven can get really heavy both in rules and gameplay, but it isn't a popular game so wouldn't be a candidate for this list.
Lol hahaha, we haven't played it yet ,not sure if it's the game for us, will see. Ah yes that's right Founders of Gloomhaven I found it pretty heavy!
Stella
I’m still yet to delve into Splotter. I’m put off by the high price, bad art, and how easy it can be to ruin your own game. I just don’t think I’ll be able toconvince my group to give them a serious go, so I can’t justify buying them, sadly.
And that's okay, not all games are for everyone, I can see why. At the same time there are people that just go out and buy all splotter games heheh. There are plentiful of games for everyone. Thank you for the visit
TtA isn't only (rules)heavy, but also too fiddly to my taste. I don't mind complexity at all, on the contrary, but when you add fiddliness to the mix, it's just too much.
Ah I see, its such a long game, it needs a lot of learning and playing investment
Clash of Cultures didn't make this list? Where would you think that fell?
In our humble opinion: There are lots of rules at front, as with many games where you have a lot of things to choose from, its heaviness comes from the number of choices you can choose from. Yes could probably included in this list potentially. Great question.
Episode 2 of Perseverence is harder than 1, but I do not think 1 is that heavy.
Aha! Thank you for confirming! Thought it would be! I heard tho from Gen Con.... they are making the next episode easier. At least lighter front load
Another vote for this. Ep2 is quite a bit more involved and is the better game among my group. Once we played Ep2, we’ve never returned to Ep1. Ep1 is a solid game, but only on the heavy side of midweight.
@@ericthomas5694 Thank you for sharing that. Wow you and your gaming group sound awesome bunch of people hehe. Hope you're looking forward for the next episodes?
I dont think Mage Knight is that heavy...
True that haha, probably in the list coz of the amount of rules?
20 games that are not for me 😀 Anachrony is the most realistic one for me to try
Haha no problems, Anachrony the base game is nice ;)
Complexity created by tons of rules... not my kind of games.
That's ok
