  • Scott Joplin’s “Gladiolus Rag” (1907)
    I found this rag to be one of Joplin’s more difficult ones. It’s played in the keys of Ab/Db, and contains some tricky chords, jumps, and fingerings that were a bit tough to work through.
    I also found that Gladiolus contains quite a few similarities with Joplin’s famous “Maple Leaf Rag”, containing very similar chord progressions and melodic phrasings. Listen to the first section in both songs and drop a comment if you can point out any similarities!
    Most importantly, I hope you all enjoy! I’d greatly appreciate all the likes, comments and subscriptions!

    For my taste, it was the perfect tempo. Any slower and it drags a bit. Well done.!

      Sounds more honky tonk out of tune

      @@robertfrost3388 Honky tonk is NOT ragtime.

      @@PiotrBarcz just to be clear....tonky tonk or tack pianos WERE used primarily in ragtime in saloons during the ragtime era. When I said sounds more honky tonk I was referring to the tuning of the piano not the generation 😉

      @@robertfrost3388 That's a Hollywood myth, ragtime wasn't played on dilapidated old pianos because there were none at the time.
      Also yes I know you were referring to the tuning of the piano, but in this case this isn't really honky tonk tuning since the piano is out of tune with itself. Honky tonk tuning would be when the unisons of each note are out of tune but the piano in general sounds fine.

    I listen to many rags and can play a few. You did a good job my only thought is it was a bit fast . It loses nuance but I still liked your approach. I subscribed.

    Terrible. Way too fast

    • @MooPotPie
      @MooPotPie 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No, it's NOT too fast. Just because you can't play it up to speed means that those who can should not. It's dance music for two-stepping and notated in 2/4. This is just about a perfect "slow march time". (March time being 120-140 BPM.) There's a recording of this piece on TH-cam which was made in 1914 - during Joplin's lifetime. I suggest you listen to iot to hear how this music was understood in its day - before Eurocentric "classical" musicians started playing it as if it were Brahms. .
