Fig Leaf Rag - Scott Joplin
มุมมอง 343ปีที่แล้ว
Hey y’all, it’s been a little while since my last video. Summer has been super busy, and I put off uploading due to my dreaded perfectionism and the ever-present option of re-recording myself…so I decided this time that I’m gonna be a little kinder to myself and just upload my first run-through of a song…and I think it turned out pretty good :) Hope y’all enjoy!

Bethena, a Concert Waltz - Scott Joplin
มุมมอง 485ปีที่แล้ว
My performance of Scott Joplin’s “Bethena, a Concert Waltz.” Written in 1905, this was Joplin’s first work after the death of his wife, Freddie. She died of pneumonia only 10 weeks after their wedding. While sources do not know the origin of the name “Bethena,” I am led to believe that this song was written in memoriam of Joplin’s relationship with Freddie. The piece traverses through 5 unique ...

The First Noel - Jazz Piano
มุมมอง 485ปีที่แล้ว
This is my performance of a Jazz Piano Cover of “The First Noel”, arranged by Philip Keveren. This piece is from the Yuletide Jazz “20 Christmas Favorites Arranged by Philip Keveren” piano book. I wanted to celebrate this Christmas season with one of my favorite arrangements in the book - The First Noel. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for Christmas piano arrangements that ...
Solace - A Mexican Serenade by Scott Joplin
มุมมอง 639ปีที่แล้ว
"Solace - A Mexican Serenade", written by Scott Joplin (1909), performed by Steven Eliya. Another Joplin tune! Solace is a slower, Latin-influenced "serenade", or "tango" as some sources label it. This song is not as technically challenging as Joplin's typical ragtime pieces, however, its slower tempo allows for infusing expression and emotion into the performance. Also, a fun little tidbit for...
Scott Joplin - Gladiolus Rag
มุมมอง 2.2Kปีที่แล้ว
Scott Joplin’s “Gladiolus Rag” (1907) I found this rag to be one of Joplin’s more difficult ones. It’s played in the keys of Ab/Db, and contains some tricky chords, jumps, and fingerings that were a bit tough to work through. I also found that Gladiolus contains quite a few similarities with Joplin’s famous “Maple Leaf Rag”, containing very similar chord progressions and melodic phrasings. List...
Pokémart Theme - Piano Cover
มุมมอง 1.2K2 ปีที่แล้ว
This is my 2-part piano arrangement and performance of the Pokémart theme from the Pokémon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum series, originally composed by Junichi Masuda. I hope this tune will bring you back to fond memories of buying dozens of repels before journeying through a cave or forest, or stocking up on ultra balls, hyper potions, and revives before spending hours trying to catch a single legend...
Scott Joplin - The Entertainer
มุมมอง 73K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Scott Joplin’s “The Entertainer” rag, written in 1902. Probably one of, if not the most well-known ragtime piece; The Entertainer is a classic that many people have either learned growing up taking piano lessons, or heard playing from your neighborhood ice cream truck. I used to know a simplified version of this song when I was younger, but the original version is longer and a lot more challeng...

i love this masterpiece it gave me a peaceful mind, also you play it good, some slow bpm that are so good to listen, i mean that from start which has slow note
This is great! 😎
Nice playing fellow Pianist. Best wishes from Chester England.
Such a really pleasant performance. I truly enjoyed your playing. I listen to a lot of ragtime and play a bit and you sir are out in front of the pack. Thanks
@@myboibill Very kind of you. Thank you
Maravillosa musica
Great work! I love your channel's focus on Joplin. Of course everyone knows him for "The Entertainer", but he had so many other great pieces. And yeah, I know this song mainly because of Roller Coaster Tycoon, haha. I always used it on the vintage cars ride.
I’m so happy somebody finally recognized it from the game 😂 thank you, friend!
For my taste, it was the perfect tempo. Any slower and it drags a bit. Well done.!
Agreed 100%
I listen to many rags and can play a few. You did a good job my only thought is it was a bit fast . It loses nuance but I still liked your approach. I subscribed.
LEGEND
So good!!
Thank you very much for Scott Joplin's Elite Syncopations in a very beautiful, rhythmically unique interpretation.
swagger overdose
You’re a genius
Surely a stretch, but thank you 🙂↕️
The king returns 🤩
Great stuff!

Your 450th sub
Very nicely played. And it improved towards the end. I would say that your touch is a bit on the heavy side. Ragtime can be played softly and slowly. This felt a bit rushed at times. On the plus side you were hitting (almost) all the right notes and the tempo was very consistent. Well done!
Most covers are slow. It's nice to hear one that isn't a funeral march
Great job! I really like your style of interpretation. I hesitate between this one, The Entertainer and Magnetic Rag, which one do you prefer playing?
I appreciate that! My favorite recently has been one called Gladiolus rag, which in my opinion is just a better version of Maple Leaf haha. Definitely check it out if you’ve never heard it!
Thank you I have listened to it, and it reminds me of Mapple Leaf! Thank you and keep publishing videos!@@steveneliya2046
This is one of Joplin’s harder pieces in my opinion. The fingering is a bit awkward in the A section. Fig Leaf gives me no trouble but this one has been giving me some trouble getting clean. I say all that to say I love the tempo that you play this at. Not too fast nor too slow. Very nice performance.
Thanks so much!
Its grade 9 on piano syllabus and thats not surprising. Gave me way more issues than MLR and The Entertainer
Been practicing it a bit for the past few months since I made this comment, and I’d say the A and C sections are still the hardest. The left hand can be a bit tricky on the D section, but B is the easiest for sure. That said I’m just about at the tempo of this video. I’ve never paid any attention to the syllabus difficulties, so your comment makes me curious how all of Joplin’s pieces rank.
@@coxandrewj Not sure what the grades mean like if something is advanced does that mean an advanced player could sight read it etc. But my guess is a grade 8 or 9 piece would require at least a few hours practice for advanced level players to play. Searchlight though probably took me at least 15 -20 hours practice and by comparison the first 2 section of entertainer took maybe 3 -4 hours while i was more inexperienced. I've learned probably 10 Joplin works and this one stood out the most as being the hardest lol
Terrible. Way too fast
No, it's NOT too fast. Just because you can't play it up to speed means that those who can should not. It's dance music for two-stepping and notated in 2/4. This is just about a perfect "slow march time". (March time being 120-140 BPM.) There's a recording of this piece on TH-cam which was made in 1914 - during Joplin's lifetime. I suggest you listen to iot to hear how this music was understood in its day - before Eurocentric "classical" musicians started playing it as if it were Brahms. .
Great way to end my day in the office. One of my favorite Joplin pieces played beautifully. Thank you.
That’s very nice to hear, thank you!
The trio and D section remind me of the west for some reason
Great job man!😊👍🏾
Beautiful playing!
Very nice playing!
wow i love this song but seems so hard to play! it sounds so good!
Oh man this was great!
Thanks so much!
This is wonderful! I want to learn how to play this!

Say hello to your 400th subscriber!
And your 401st :)
Going into the third movement you made about 100 mistakes, more like never ending bumnote rag :x
Let's hear you play it!
Very nice, Steven. Thanks.
A real feast for the ears to hear Debussy's arabesque in such a beautiful, solemn concert experience. Thanks very much.
Thank you for the thoughtful words!
Splendid!
More Debussy! Keep up the splendid work, "Steven Eliya".
You play very well. I enjoyed so much :)
Thank you very much for this beautiful, rhythmic habanera and tango alternating melody. A true masterpiece by Joplin and an unique interpretation on your part.
❤❤
Played very nicely at decent pace. I enjoyed this performance.
I lplayed this song many times and love hearing it. it sounds so amazing
Thanks! That means a lot :)
@@steveneliya2046 thanks for the reply i am actually going on a concert very soon to play this song and some other pieces at a school i went to. and as well as going to another concert in North Carolina soon to play as well.
This is fantastic! I was so inspired by Scott Joplin's Maple Leaf rag that I taught myself to play it only knowing how to read treble clef from playing saxophone and learning to read bass clef. Definitely not the most efficient way to pick up playing piano🤣, but it was so worth it. I learned Gladiolus rag, too. It's so much fun to play! I've listened to a bunch of your songs now, and so far this is my favorite from you. Now you're my inspiration to want to keep going.
That’s really awesome to hear. Thanks so much!
a little sloppy on the second part but overall not bad
Nice playing as always! JUST PLEASE TUNE THE PIANO
Sounds more honky tonk out of tune
@@robertfrost3388 Honky tonk is NOT ragtime.
@@PiotrBarcz just to be clear....tonky tonk or tack pianos WERE used primarily in ragtime in saloons during the ragtime era. When I said sounds more honky tonk I was referring to the tuning of the piano not the generation 😉
@@robertfrost3388 That's a Hollywood myth, ragtime wasn't played on dilapidated old pianos because there were none at the time. Also yes I know you were referring to the tuning of the piano, but in this case this isn't really honky tonk tuning since the piano is out of tune with itself. Honky tonk tuning would be when the unisons of each note are out of tune but the piano in general sounds fine.
It's YEARS I was waiting for someone to replicate this specific pokemart theme in real life. Gorgeous work!
Thanks so much!
