The musical Kristina from Duvemåla portrays swedish emigrants in the late 1800s. 1/4 of the population left Sweden due to famine, misgrowth, poverty and religious oppression. They travelled to America and settled there. Kristina is homesick, exhausted, lost in the new land and she has just lost a baby through miscarriage. She is deeply god fearing and believing. The doctor says that she can not get pregnant again. If so, she would risk her own life. Due to lack of contraceptives in that day and age, that means God has taken her from her husband. And so, for the first time in her life, she question Gods existence.
