    I teach the bent leg method with both feet/toes pointing same direction. Yes it’s safer (very important) but also your whole body is aligned to rotate and pull uke in the circular direction of the throw. Tori keeps rotating hips (pivoting on the ball of rear leg) until you can see your left heel (leading leg). This removes the possibility of falling with uke and allows Tori to stay directly above Uke to control or move into additional techniques.

    I have been shown body drop with that bent leg, tori's belt below uke's belt when throwing (to make sure the body has "dropped"), right hand up in uke's left shoulder and not moving across the gi (my weakness), left hand sweeping round and looking at the "watch" on the left wrist and body dropping low, your way is how we have been shown, more or less kisaburo watanabe's way, I must improve! 43 year old white belt, 3 lessons in, loving your videos.

      Correct me if I'm wrong but that mount you had on him at the end it looked very simple and in perfect positioning for an armbar it may be my jiujitsu practitioner talking but they did all come from the same art that is Japanese jujutsu

      @@hvskyline1368 well, BJJ actually comes from Judo, not JJJ. The things is that at the time, Kodokan Judo was referred to as "Jigoro Kano Jujutsu"

    Make more!! Great video. Love Tai Otoshi. I was able to do it some times. But i train with some guys that are a lot heavier than me. So i'm having a hard time with judo. A video about dealing with heavier people would be cool.

      +Davi Stanesco Hi Davi, thank you for your comment. Dealing with heavier people requires you to use movement and speed to catch them. As they are heavier you need to create much more movement to break their balance. Try to do throws whilst they are moving around so you can use their weight against them. Dont try to beat them strength vs strength. Consider using combinations to break up their defense. I will cover your request, keep watching!

    Karateka here, If I may make an observation. The way you do this throw it looks ALOT like a front stance, or Zenkutsu dachi, but with the heal raised and pivoting on the ball of the foot. In Karate, we pivot on the heel of the back leg foot, to avoid the same problems with knees you're talking about.

    It is VERY important, in my opinion as a judoka, to learn Kosoto Gake. This is an easy counter to learn and effective if you can "outspeed" your ukes' Tai Otoshi.

    Professor it seems doing tai otoshi forward as such, makes for a different angle, is that correct? Not exactly forward but not sideways either. Something in between.

    Use your logic Eric Inglis. Mr Sampson here gave a logical explanation and demonstration WHY the move is more safe from he toes and knee slightly bent than flat footed and leg straight.

    Is there any chance you could go over the reverse tai otoshi as it applies without the gi in jiu jitsu? It seems a lot of people drop to a knee when applying it from a rear bodylock, would you advise against this? should it be done standing as demonstrated here even when behind an opponent when looking to mat return them?

    Sensei, what would you recommend for a Karateka for 9 Basic throws?

      I'm no sensei, but I would go for a diverse range of throws for different occasions/positions. Something like o soto gari/gake, o uchi gari, ko uchi gari/gake, tani otoshi, tai otoshi, de ashi barai, sasae tsuri komi ashi, a hip throw (I like harai goshi, but whatever suits you, like o goshi, ippon seoi nage or whatever - uchi mata is also good, if you can make it work) and maybe tomoe nage or something like that. But it depends on what you feel comfortable with and what you can make work. Other people would probably have other recommendations.

      The throws that work best for a person vary a lot based on size and body type. But for a karateka I'd avoid sacrifice techniques (if your base art is striking then you don't want to end up on the ground), and focus less on one-legged throws (like harai goshi and uchimata) requiring greater expertise and balance. But definitely learn the four basic reaps (O/ko uchi/soto gari), as well as O-goshi, tai otoshi, and ippon seonagi. Stick with a small number of basic throws that you can practice a lot, and which give a variety of different entries/purposes.

    How odd, nothing mentioned about having the leg bent then straightening it for the throw, giving the throw an extra pop. That is how I was taught the throw.

    i was told the straight leg tai otoshi when done with a less wide stance is safer than bent leg.... not sure who to trust

      +Eric Inglis Hi Eric, thank you for your comment. In my video I explain the differences between them. I feel the shin to shin traditional tai o toshi is much safer as there is less risk of trapping somebody's knee, and throughout the years I have seen this happen many times. Have a go at both and see which one you feel comfortable with. Both work, I just have my preference for the reasons stated in my video. Thanks for watching!

      +Eric Inglis , I agree with what Sampson is saying in this video. I weigh around 140 kg, from my practice and observation over 3 years in Judo. His demonstrated way, would help you in avoiding knee injuries when it comes to Tai Otoshhi. Personally, I have faced immense pain and mobility issues with straight leg technique, when sparing with a powerful opponent or amateurs who are big in size .
