The sound on this 3 months old video is much better and higher than the one year old videos that I've previously watched. Thank you Michael for the improvement !
I studied audio engineering at university and practiced outside, and I want to bring up an important topic about mastering to everyone. It is the final polish of an album, as you only have access to the final mix or the channels of that recording. Mixing, not mastering, is where most of the sound characteristics of the recording come from: sound stage (due to panning), initial compression, EQ etc. Knowing that and that this album was originally recorded mono, tells you there’s not a ton to be done outside of what is already there. From what I’ve heard, Bernie’s signal path tends to be the most revealing or analytical of anyones, which means his mastering “gets out of the way” of the music the most. I believe the Kevin Grey mastering probably rolled off the upper frequencies and that warmed up the final presentation to make it ever so slightly more palatable to everyone, not to say that his isn’t extremely revealing and analytical as well (I love everything he does but I have come to give him a 9 and Bernie a 10). It seems to my ear that Bernie’s mastering revealed what Miles wanted out of his trumpet at this time and this album, and what Van Gelder wanted from the mix. And that was - an in your face delivery of the trumpet. This was not cut hot - it was played, recorded and mixed hot.
There’s a double album put out by Prestige in 1972 called “Miles Davis”. It contains both albums “Relaxin’ with the Miles Davis Quintet” and “Cookin’ with the Miles Davis Quintet”. It is remastered by Rudy Van Gelder. I compared the Craft to this old reissue. The 1972 reissue is more detailed with more air and every instrument has greater richness and body. The muted trumpet is not shrill but in good balance with the other instruments. I prefer this old reissue over the Craft. In fact if I were to sum it up; I’d say it sounds more alive than the Craft without any of the excessive forward nature of the Craft. .
I don't have one "super vinyl" LP! I'm excited about getting my first one! Thanks for the informative videos Michael, we really appreciate your contributions to our community!
Amazing review as usual Michael. I have them both and the Craft one has a little bit of an edge in my opinion. It is hot indeed and it sounds like the band is playing in your living room. Thank you for the video! 🙏
I love my Small Batch recording of Relaxin. The mix is sooooo hot, bright, and has a lot of treble. This is one of the best jazz albums in my collection
I have the Analogue Productions vinyl SACD and the Prestige XRCD of this album. I do like the smooth analog sound of the AP vinyl of this fantastic album. I agree we will see a repress of Relaxin from AP in the future.
I listened to my Relaxin album by Craft and Miles sounds very bright compared to the other instruments, a very staccato sound, but I think his sound is wholesome, definitely warmer. Thank you for your always interesting insight.
Thanks for the review. I wish I had the Analogue Productions version to compare but I love the Craft Small Batch release. This is one of my top three favorite Miles Davis albums. Fortunately, nothing about it struck me as analytical on my more modest system.
My copy was faulty. Had crackling and popping sounds sound through some of it… been in contact with Craft, but they seem to be having a long think about it (6 days so far). I have to say, that is not good enough. I have had lightening quick service from MoFi, Third Man, VMP, and even Acoustic Sounds were quicker than this… (and the problem I had was not with one of ‘their’ records)… the wait goes on while they think about what to do.
It's hard to compare record recovers from looking at the pictures from discogs. Looking at the Discogs pictures of the original issue and comparing the covers to the Craft Small batch and OJC versions, I think that those versions are closer to the original release than the AP version. I feel that the OJC version sounds the best to me. I bought my Small Batch version direct from Craft when it was released. I wasn't very happy with the first copy I received. It was noisy and had lots of ticks and pops. Cleaning on my VPI RCM didn't help. I contacted them about the record quality and they couldn't understand it. I emailed them mp3's of some of the worst areas. They couldn't hear what I was complaining about. So next I took screen shots of a sound graph of those areas when playing the record and it was clear the there was something there that shouldn't be. They admitted that there was a problem. Next, they didn't know what to do about a return or a defective record. They sent me a new album sealed in it's jacket just like the original came in inside the box. The replacement was much better. It seems to me that, although pressed by RTI, this Small Batch Craft LP is not as good as the Mofi 'one-steps', which RTI also presses. For overall sound quality, my DCC-Jazz gold CD sounds the best to me.
Relaxin is my favorite Miles Davis album. I ordered the Analogue Productions back in February when that video went out telling people to order everything even though it was back ordered. Still no sign of it, unfortunately. I will say if any record would benefit from a warmer pressing, it would be Relaxin, its a very shrill recording.
You are correct I saw that video and ordered nearly everything in the series especially as Chad seemed to indicate that this might be the last time they were repressed
@@ergloo6660 yes. I can’t argue with the quality of the AP pressings, but I would say the vagueness and lack of clarity around what is in and out of print or available is misleading. It creates an artificial sense of scarcity.
Hey Michael, thanks for the review! Mine is still with the worst UK courier, hope I get it by 2030. Quick question, which lacquer is yours cut from? The one with the full Bernie Grundmann signature or with the "BG" initials on the A-side? There are 2 Bernie cuts of this release discovered so far. Looks like Bernie did a cut, and another cut later on (potentially when Craft decided to increase the numbers). People have been discussing if there's any sound difference between them as there may be some time difference between the two cuts.

Wouldn't it be great to have a box set of the 4 last Miles Prestige recordings. Another informative video!!! Thanks--J

My copy came in some weeks ago and I waited to unbox it until last Friday. Unfortunately it has had a lot of surface noise and now I’m waiting for Craft to start the replacement process. It's great how many audiophile releases there are now every month. But I ask myself one question. If there is already a good audiophile LP of Miles Davis Relaxin', why now another one ? Why are masterpieces not yet released in audiophile sound quality? It feels like every year there is a Miles Davis Out of the Blue. And if one already makes a Miles Davis Relaxin, why only 1000 pieces for 100 dollars? Have the companies still not noticed that the audiophile market has grown enormously? This can be seen for example in the fact that you could buy MFSL records in Germany in the past, which is almost impossible today. It pisses me off that you bring a high-quality music product on the market, only for people with fat wallet. Status symbols for music freaks. Blue Note shows that it can be done differently.
