@jamesford3549 I have a GTS T with a strange problem.. the engine runs ok at idle there are very light rpm changes sometimes, the problem is that when the car reach 5k/6k rpms starts to continually bang from the exhaust and the engine behive like if it has the launch control 😬 idk if it has a strange map, if maybe are the sparks or if the gasoline can be the problem
Great advice, One very important point, no matter if you choose a 32-33 or 34 do not spend all your money on the car! I would recommend having $5000 on the side for unseen issues. This may mean you buy a lower trim level or a higher KM car but will keep you on the road instead of trying to save money and have the car in a garage. Mine started life as a R32 GTS4, converted to a R33 GTR vspec with a R34 front suspension. Fun finding what model parts I need to order as not all will work across the 3 cars. Missfire issues can be fixed by starting out simple and cheap! MAF cleaner and new air filter New fuel filter and fuel lines, boy was my filter clogged. Spark plugs Coil packs remove, clean, add dielectric grease on boots and spark plugs to prevent spark jump, reinstall. New coil pack wire harness, upgraded ones for $100 will stand heat better, stock $70. If that hasn’t fixed the missfire new coil packs $300-500 for 6, I haven’t needed to do this yet. Expect to do all fluids, coolant, oil, brake, differentials, transmission, you can do it all yourself if somewhat handy about $300 Axel CV rubber boots, one failed on my car, after looking for a replacement and looking at all axels decided to do all 8, removes axels myself, found a shop to rebuild as new for $500 less than ordering OEM parts. Also windshield wiper blades and 2 new washer reservoir pumps, pain to get to but only $30 for pumps and $40 for blades. Clean underside of car very well, address light surface rust by removing and priming then a good rubber undercoat and in my case a black coat of paint, did wheel wells as well. Replace all your fuses and relays, got my auxiliary cooling fan working that way, $100 Upgrades were a titanium exhaust $1000 and adjustable coil overs $1250. I paid $18800 for my 80km 50k mile car with no rust, no accident, everything works well for a 28 yr old car and 24 yr old paint. Pretty stock motor, ceramic turbos and a tune allows 0-60 in 4sec A plus found out the 18” veilside 3piece rims are worth $8k alone! Have about $3500 in repair, replace and upgrade items over 18 months of ownership.
I think the main problem with these cars is people forget how old they are and when they are paying the price they demand now, want a perfect car for the price. Unfortunately they are old and bring such age related issues to the table, having said that I have spent a fortune on mine not because its parts failed but I simply caught the Gtr tuning and upgrading bug.... The most expensive of all gtr problems lol.
Great info, thanks for it. I'm importing one in 2020 to the Northeast US and I'm hoping to keep my Saab running for the winter when it snows and the GTR for 80% of the year. The r34 GTR cost is skyhigh and I'd be happy with a GTT so I can get the iconic body, but I don't want to wait so long and personally find the r33 beautiful. I grew up driving my dad's Merc e320 for the past 3 years and I appreciate a nice straight 6 engine and a long wheelbase. My main concern was always rust under the wheel well and the ceramic turbos. Looks like seals are important to get inspected before I buy as well as the strength of the gearbox as well as keep some spare coil packs handy. I'll keep your points in mind and I'll watch this vid again in a few years :)
2456sunny Glad it was of help to you. Yes seal wise only issue I have seen on mine was last year I had a slight leak from the seal between transfer case and gear box, not enough to drip on the floor just enough to make the case appear damp. I love the R34 but could never pay so much more for not that much more car than the R33 plus the money they are going for you could get a R35 and although the R34 is better looking and more iconic I think the sheer performance of the R35 would win me over. I wish you the best of luck when you do get one and I hope you enjoy as much as I have.
Recently got up enough money for a MotoRex R33 here in the States. Has the bond release and everything. I've already noticed the misfiring and such. She's definitely got problems, but thanks for this video. I'm probably going to use proper fixes once I get the cash for it, but she runs well.
Dumptruck Gaming That's awesome congratulations on getting one, yeah the misfire is a common issue and luckily a simple fix as long as funds allow. Good luck with it mate.
All GTRs 32s, 33s & 34s get strut tower rust, it's usually from high stress from the 4x4 system. The 33 is over 20 years old check the car over well! Grant Davis awesome comment with great advice, much appreciated. I only mentioned R33 strut tops as its a R33 focused video , plus I have no experience of R32 or R34 so didn't wanna speak out of turn.
Grant Davis Finished strut top number two on mine yesterday which was better than the first one, but mine rusted through to a hole last winter and then this summer we did them. Today we are doing my dad's as it's started bulging but found as we started digging it's been rotten for a while and someone filled it to hide it and now as we have cut it all back the damage is four times worse than mine. It's going to be another long day. I will do a video on the comparison
Grant Davis yeah in the video when I said we welded the underneath it's because from factory there is a gap between the layers in the wheel arch so water sprays up there and can't get out, so hoping that welding that gap up will help it last a little longer.
Living in Canada I don't drive mine in the winter because of the road salt and anti-ice spray would destroy it fast. It's been almost 4 months without driving it and I really miss driving it, my 2006 civic with 380,000km is so SLOW..
Getting one 2017 or 2018. Living in the western part of Norway where it's usually raining rather than snowing during winters. I think this is the ideal location to be a performance car owner over here.
KoopaXross cool if you have a channel please do a video when you buy one, I always love to see other peoples rides especially when they put their own stamp on them.
Gary Dixon GTR Currently looking at a not so expensive R33 GTR V-spec II. I've confirmed from model number on the blue chassis plate it is a V-spec. Looking to buy during the summer vacation.
I brought an r33 with 50k clicks on it full original used once a couple weeks to get groceries by an old couple OLD like 80 year old the guy kept it so mint interior is mint only flaw is small bit of rust about 1cm by 2cm in the boot she’s mint👌🏻👌🏻
That's awesome news, I have had to plate my strut tops , rear inner arches and rear sills so keep her clean and keep an eye on those places for the future also as I found out this year the side skirts hide alot of nastiness if left unchecked . Unfortunately I have owned mine 11 years but only been able to garage her for the last two and those winters outside did her no good and now I am paying the price .
Gary Dixon GTR yeah man thanks heaps, I got it in the garage now but I’m getting it painted silver original colour but it’s faded in some places so I’ll paint her and keep it mint 👍🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Fellow scouser. Recognized the town in the background before the accent tbh. My R34 has zero body rust underneath although some of the bolts and fastners have surface rust on them. Looking at it though I can see, how they can rust easy. The paint is no better than a Micra of the same era. i.e. shite.
Yeah totally agree they can rust easy if left untreated and daily driven, plus no garage for it to keep warm in out of those cold nights lol. you have a good eye it is infact Liverpool , no accent though as from north wales.
Gary, in my experience synchros wear as a result of downshifting without rev matching. Do you rev match your gtr on downshifts? I've got 50k+ miles on my current manual with no synchro issues. Also, dogging the car before the transmission fluid is up to temperature will do them in as well.
ngbanks yes a good point I forgot to mention about rev matching, I do indeed rev match on down shifts (well as good as I can because it sounds cool lol ) I totally agree about people not letting oils ect get up to temp, I cringe when I see those people that turn the key and drive instantly. I don't know if it's necessary but I also tend to change my gearbox oil everytime I do the engine and diffs every other.
Really informative video, I hope to get one in the future, but I like to know what I would be getting into. How long have you had yours? Did these problems that you did have kinda happen all at once or over a period of time?
Sorely considering getting one later this year or early next year. Seeing a LOT going for around the £20k mark (half that for the GTS'), kinda surprising given the prices of some R32s and 34s! Good info though, will be sure to look out for these quirks.
ReaperKallina yeah 32 have the old school tax, 34 have fast and furious fan boy tax but at least it means 33 is cheaper lol. I still think it's crazy 6 years ago I sold my gtst for 2000 as that was the going price then, should of hold on to it.
Been looking on AutoTrader and didn't realize R33's had fallen to around the 15 Grand mark, so i am extremely tempted. The one thing i'd be worried about is, being that almost all of them would be Grey Imports, checking if one has been clocked, there would be no guarantee if the mileage is genuine, especially with checking a Japanese service history.
Picking one up in Japan soon, looking for common faults. But not going to lie, I dont understand half of what you're saying. Can you drop a slang list for european to western? I.e. Boot well, turrets, etc. Are the turrets the front struts? I know they rust real bad. Boot well..trunk?
Kyle Johnson awesome I bet you're going to love it. Yes you're correct boot is trunk and the suspension strut tops are what I call turrets. I have a video on how to fix the leaking trunk and a service video which shows coil packs and plugs, my air filter video shows airflow meter removal and next month I am filming a suspension strut top repair.
Michael Yeah good shout ditching ceramic turbos is a good mod if you intend to remove the restrictor from the boost line or install a boost controller. not sure how you would check during the buying process thou weather the turbos are ceramic or been upgraded. Did you use your engine rebuild as an excuse to create a power monster? ;)
I did indeed 😇. If you can see the marking plates on the turboes, they can be identified. Allso very little lag. Fast spool. Mine broke right as I found out restrictor was removed.
NELKEL GTR VLOGS thanks man it's been crazy busy lately, I well liked the last footage of your fd though totally worth turning on the laptop to watch, can't wait till you get it!
Sorry bro that sucks, things are winding down here for Xmas so have more time to create content :) Thanks bro, I went full on into the edit for that video. Pity the soundtrack is blocked on some mobile devices...
Points? Didn't know they had a dizzy. Mine certainly doesn't.! Missing is an easy fix once you have had a few 'Liners. Coil packs (replace with splitfires), have the right heat range plugs (copper 7's) and gap them if running big boost. Problem solved.
Mates Rates Real Estate Australia sorry thought I said change coil packs and plugs as that was the first thing I did on both my skylines and my dad's aswell . Also did I say points as in dizzy? Must of been a brain fart if I did. I covered the boost issues by saying when the car cuts out at certain points under acceleration which could be coil packs, plugs or MAF. Sorry if I wasn't clear in the video, I tend to ramble on lol.
Jack Rides I loved my Gtst it was a great car, I had to change the coil packs but other than that it never missed a beat and I drove it 60 miles daily for two years. Can't believe the prices of them now though I picked mine up for 2k back in the day.
jojo banks In terms of getting a car imported ask for as many pictures or preferably videos of the car as possible especially footage of known trouble areas and maybe so of the engine running, cold starts etc but basically your putting alot of faith in your importer.
So what's your take on Japan imports they have a bunch of great cars at amazing prices but I don't know much about them besides what they state In their website
jojo banks I didn't import mine but I would suggest using a well known company, looking on forums etc will point you in the right direction. Don't forget there are a few fee's and hidden costs to importing too if the company doesn't include it all. NelKel JDM volgs has imported three cars and done walk through videos about it on his channel definitely worth a watch.
Thanks for the video. I am looking at buying one towards end of this year when I have enough funds. I am looking purchasing from an importer(s). I am not very technical with cars If I wanted to make small changes or minor fixes is this something I can pick up as I go researching or is it best to take it to a garage?
Rory S The gtr owners forum is great for technical advice from small beginner jobs to engine rebuilds, there are some very useful and in depth threads on there. Glad you found the video useful and good luck with your search for one
I brought a R33 vspec that had only done 50k. And the first thing that happened was the coils and the missfire under boost. I was quite lucky that it had trust turbos, blitz intercooler, full komatsu exhaust and link ecu among alot of other things. great fast car but I didn't enjoy it. you can see it launched in one of my videos
Gary Dixon GTR it had track suspension so rock hard ride. all my cars have had hard suspension but it was over the top. cavalier clutch so it was on or off, pretty annoying in traffic and I guess at the end of the day it is a 1995 Nissan skyline. Nothing really fancy inside,no creature comforts so to speak. just a old fast as hell skyline lol. I swiched to a v8 actually but ive have owned most fast imports except a supra tt. I may get a r35 one day as ive driven a few of them and really enjoyed it. that or a evo x. either way something with a dual clutch gearbox.
J Wrecka totally get you on the suspension that's why I stayed with the s-tune adjustable suspension which was a factory upgrade as firm but not rock hard like other skylines I been in. I moved to the city recently and the clutch is becoming a bug bear for me too and as for the interior I think it was designed in a lunch break lol
Thunderbug I found if it splutters at first touch of the throttle or hovering the throttle to maintain speed it's the afm but if its doing it under full open throttle and under boost is plugs or coil pack (normally coil pack) I suffered the coil pack issue with mine. Replaced with split fire and perfect for last 7 years.
Nice one mate thanks, its been driving me mad, mine is misfiring with wide open throttle once it reaches close to full boost. I was looking for Yellow jackets but cant seem to find any in uk. Where did u get the split fires ill pick some up based on this. Thanks again.
Thunderbug Conceptuea tuning offer a wide range of coil packs and other gtr goodies, plus they actually know about gtrs from experience so give them a call. I use them for alot of stuff and can't fault them.
Stuee6899 insurance is 80 more than my vec so outside city cost 350 lowest postcode band inside city 650 highest postcode band. I travel 30 miles a day round trip to work so I get a week on 3/4 of a tank roughly 45 pound to top up. only other real costs are usual wear out items, tyres and brakes etc but as alot of newer cars are coming with 18inch wheels now days tyre cost same as a normal car. as far as service wise I do it myself so can't quote labour but parts are slightly more than the vec but that's because I put higher spec oil, filter, plugs etc where as vec gets standard replacement. daily wise I miss little things from the vec like heated seats, faster window demister and maybe a softer ride at 5am on a cold winter morning lol
Pleasantly surprising to be honest. Always wanted a skyline, to own one would be incredible for me. Thank you for your answers and keep the excellent and informative videos coming :-)
Whats an R33 'feel like' these days mate? I mean I get into 10 year old cars and its obvious how far tech has moved on (not always a good thing). Do they feel 20 years old yet? Cheers
Michael Goodwin in terms of interior and toys yes it feels old (90s JDM interior was designed on a lunch break) but as far as driver feedback and experience when you find a great piece of road it feels great. Obviously it's not a patch on the new one but unlike some modern cars you feel when you get round a tricky corner you had something to do with it. The only thing that ruins a stock one for me on a good road is the stock discs and pads are scary not upto the task. I would love a new one but they cost so much to keep that's the problem more than the purchase price.
Donovan Wallace maybe if you got in early before any rust got in it could work but for its well to late. I am welding the inner rear arch this afternoon on mine :(
Maybe your clutch slave cylinder is giving out, I had BAD shifting problems on/off with mine until I swapped it out, shifts like a dream now, no issues.
Tom Kaos (Official) yeah that's a good shout as during a service last year I drained the fluid in the slave and replaced it and it is loads better but very occasionally still there. The old fluid was dirty too so maybe a sign of seals giving or corroding.
brandon hall That's what I am saying, these are some of the parts you may need to replace because they are common problems. So if you spot any of these issues you can factor it in to your price.
Mista _Wo I think with the things I covered plus what people covered in the comments section you will have enough of an idea to avoid a lemon. But if you view one and have any questions just comment.
tanthony2007 it was meant as I believe the awd system on a scooby or evo would be better suited as the Gtr only sends power to the front once the rear slips which in those conditions doesn't work that good it's simple really but most people use them as dry weather cars now anyway.
GTRMITCH That's so rubbish, we're they smoking or any sign before hand or just went? Were they ceramic and if so what boost was it running because ceramic won't last running over factory boost for long. Hopefully you didn't suffer any internal damage that way although it seems bad now you can fit modern replacement turbos and run slightly more power with amazing reliability or go down the power route as so many people do. Normally if you see a high bhp skyline the story starts with well after my factory turbos died..... And the got the power bug.
Gary Dixon GTR it was the boost that made it shit itself, but never the less, its on the mend, turbos orderedbas keeping the twin turbo set up and run it on around 15 to 20 psi, as first uk owner just gotta fix it as it comes, cars all undersealed and no rust what so ever.
Gary Dixon GTR i want some high power in the future but i got twins that can run 800 but thats like a fully forged engine and everything, wanna make big power with the twin turbo instead of being like everyone else.
GTRMITCH awesome about the underseal and no rust, mine has been in the UK a long time plus I use it all year round for 8 years so it's definitely not rust free but I just love driving it. I personally would also love the twin approach to big power, most people are put off because of the expense compared to single but twin would be more of a rarity I think. Not sure how much boost you can run because if they are 800bhp capable you might have to be delicate with them while you build up everything else if that makes sense they might be to much turbo for the engine but I am sure a map will keep everything safe and your turbos will be well within there work limit at stockish power, they won't break a sweat.
corinful Yeah I guess it all depends on how well stored it's been during its life, but as mine is not garaged and driven in all weathers the strut tops went from mint to needing welding in 4 years. so if you manage to get one with as least rust as possible garaging / dry weather use would help. but I like driving it you much to wrap it in cotton wool lol
ZTD 240 I did exactly the same for like a year before buying mine, every overtime shift I would watch some random skyline video thinking one day I will get one lol.
Gary Dixon GTR I like the accent but some words are funny to me at times but I love the car culture in the UK and movie's also the word cunt such a passive blunt word lol
Samuel I personally don't get why people hate on cars because they like another cars and as far as supra, R32 and R34 if I had my way I would love to own them all plus mine lol.
Some good information here for guys in the market for a 33GTR. I’d also suggest checking oil pressure and compression too.
Is the GTS-T Having the same problem?
@@MrTruth11943 yes

I don't know if it's necessary but I also tend to change my gearbox oil everytime I do the engine and diffs every other.
Thanks for the information! Based on your reaction at the light with the other person not paying attention, I like you. 😂
I have a video on how to fix the leaking trunk and a service video which shows coil packs and plugs, my air filter video shows airflow meter removal and next month I am filming a suspension strut top repair.
ceramic turbo is the biggest killer.. recked my engine before I knew. at 1 bar. peaked 1.05 after cat straight pipe install and boom.
Very informative bro! Good to have you back and uploading again :)
Same reaction I have when people are on their phones. hahahha.
Great info though! Thanks!
I want a clean white gtst for dramatic drift effect :P solid advice ty
Jack Rides I loved my Gtst it was a great car, I had to change the coil packs but other than that it never missed a beat and I drove it 60 miles daily for two years. Can't believe the prices of them now though I picked mine up for 2k back in the day.
But what if your getting the car imported from a company like Japan imports. How would you know if your getting a lemon or not?
jojo banks In terms of getting a car imported ask for as many pictures or preferably videos of the car as possible especially footage of known trouble areas and maybe so of the engine running, cold starts etc but basically your putting alot of faith in your importer.
NelKel JDM volgs has imported three cars and done walk through videos about it on his channel definitely worth a watch.
wow, great video Bro.
cool digs is a car t shirts shop Thanks, I am glad you liked it.
Very helpful video thanks mate, looking at getting this next year so checking these kinds of videos to help me.
Donald Mokgale awesome glad you are getting one they are a great fun project car. Keep me posted if you get one.
Gary Dixon GTR i absolutely will. Let me subscribe
Donald Mokgale I look forward to seeing it, I love seeing other peoples cars and how they turn out because everyone has a different style.
Glad you found the video useful and good luck with your search for one
thanks dude. I'll have join up on there and have a read.
J Wrecka I will check that out, how come you didn't enjoy it if you don't mind me asking? Sounded like a beast with the specs.
Yo man, u mention the misfire under boost. Is that the afm? Mine misfires when getting into high boost, regardless of temp.
Cheers, you been a massive help. Cant wait to get it sorted.
thanks for the info looking to build one didnt know about the brakes duly noted!
Micheal Kirwan Glad it was useful, if you video your build, send me a link I always enjoy build threads
Alright Gary,
You still got the car, haven’t seen you online for a while.
Nice helpful video. What's it like as a daily, running cost wise?
Nice one, thanks for the reply. Doesn't sound too bad, similar mpg to my old blobeye sti. Sounds very reasonable on parts too!
Stuee6899 Yeah I would say if you ran a subie for a daily you definitely can a gtr.
Pleasantly surprising to be honest. Always wanted a skyline, to own one would be incredible for me. Thank you for your answers and keep the excellent and informative videos coming :-)
Stuee6899 Your welcome, glad I could help.
Brilliant video. Thanks for sharing.
I would love a new one but they cost so much to keep that's the problem more than the purchase price.
nice vid man 👌
Dane M Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated.
Gary Dixon GTR my gtr is the same but i need that nismo rear blade 👌
Why don't ppl foam seal fenders to prevent rust
Donovan Wallace maybe if you got in early before any rust got in it could work but for its well to late. I am welding the inner rear arch this afternoon on mine :(
The shop by me has an r33 and it's really clunky during city driving
clunky as in suspension wise or drive train wise?
Maybe your clutch slave cylinder is giving out, I had BAD shifting problems on/off with mine until I swapped it out, shifts like a dream now, no issues.
Tom Kaos (Official) yeah that's a good shout as during a service last year I drained the fluid in the slave and replaced it and it is loads better but very occasionally still there. The old fluid was dirty too so maybe a sign of seals giving or corroding.
why not just replace these problem areas and parts ??
brandon hall That's what I am saying, these are some of the parts you may need to replace because they are common problems. So if you spot any of these issues you can factor it in to your price.
should i paint my center console like you
Huss 123 I wrapped it rather than paint incase I didn't like it, glad I did as I will be taking it off and trying carbon wrap instead.
Gary Dixon GTR when will you do carbon wrap
Huss 123 within the next few videos I think and I will do a comparison to the white, I just think carbon might look for subtle.
You should test cars for a living very helpful
can you be my personal r33 inspector?
Mista _Wo I think with the things I covered plus what people covered in the comments section you will have enough of an idea to avoid a lemon. But if you view one and have any questions just comment.
why can't you drive a gtr on the snow ?
You can and I have had to this year actually but why would you want to subject them to extra salt and rotting goodness ?
how easy is it to avoid drifting with it at high speed ?
That "driving in the snow" statement doesn't make any sense to me lol.
Main-land Japan gets a good bit of snow.
tanthony2007 it was meant as I believe the awd system on a scooby or evo would be better suited as the Gtr only sends power to the front once the rear slips which in those conditions doesn't work that good it's simple really but most people use them as dry weather cars now anyway.
thanks for sharing, enjoyed it.
dailydrivenjzx Thanks I appreciate it. Just checked out your channel and seen your little sleeper style R33, good work.
Just bought one, 6 weeks later twin turbos blew up
GTRMITCH That's so rubbish, we're they smoking or any sign before hand or just went?
Gary Dixon GTR they are rated to 3 bar but wanna run between 1.2 and 0.8, think thats a safe bet? Standard fitting is 1.5 bar
buying 1 soon
SAN TAN awesome you will love it! I have enjoyed mine so much, if you have a channel get a vid up when you buy one.
Gtr's are rusty in Japan too there is no exception to the rule. I looked at loads in Japan including R34 with rust on the strut tops.
corinful Yeah I guess it all depends on how well stored it's been during its life, but as mine is not garaged and driven in all weathers the strut tops went from mint to needing welding in 4 years. so if you manage to get one with as least rust as possible garaging / dry weather use would help. but I like driving it you much to wrap it in cotton wool lol
Gary Dixon GTR Its the only downside with the Gtr....Rust. Shame as its an amazing iconic car
i watch this like i can afford one of these... taking notes and so forth
ZTD 240 I did exactly the same for like a year before buying mine, every overtime shift I would watch some random skyline video thinking one day I will get one lol.
Yeah, i do have a 240 with a rb25det swapped into it. Thats good enough for now
ZTD 240 sweet that sounds awesome I love the shape of those, I noticed you have videos of it. I'm gonna check it out.
I like your rpm gauge lol
My dad's has the usual fault and always says 9000rpm lol
Gary Dixon GTR i really liked your vid, I’m from the states and I’m planning on getting a R32/33/34. U have any more tips worth sharin? Haha
I Want to buy a r33 gts and just swap to a v8, of corse turbo it, just to piss off "jdm" guys
116liljoker There was a cool gtst at Tunerfest north this year with a V8 from an M5 which was turbo it was epic sounding.
You don't deserve a R33
wtf boot? you mean trunk British dialogue is so weird on Americans will understand and Britt's will get offended
Adrian Stubbs haha yeah no one here says trunk, hood or fender it's boot, bonnet and wing lol
Gary Dixon GTR I like the accent but some words are funny to me at times but I love the car culture in the UK and movie's also the word cunt such a passive blunt word lol
Wtf is a Turret? lol
Tom Kaos (Official) The strut tops, front suspension top mounts or turrets lol you never heard them called that?
In the US, a turret generally involves some sort of mounted gun lol I was wondering the same thing.
in the US i think we call these "shock towers"
I think you mean "Top Hats"
The haters, got a lot of them when I had them, the haters are Supra fanboys or R32 and R34 fanboys.
Samuel I personally don't get why people hate on cars because they like another cars and as far as supra, R32 and R34 if I had my way I would love to own them all plus mine lol.
