The Beatles' Apple Corps. Was a SH*TSHOW!

  • On the founding of Apple, John Lennon commented: "Our accountant came up and said 'We got this amount of money. Do you want to give it to the government or do something with it?' So we decided to play businessmen for a bit because we've got to run our own affairs now."
Even though Apple was declared the most successful new record company of the year for 1968, before long the band members' ignorance of finance and administration combined with their naive, utopian mission of funding struggling, unknown artists left Apple Corps with no solid business plan.
The Beatles' naiveté and inability to keep track of their own accounts was also eagerly exploited by the employees of Apple, who purchased drugs and alcoholic beverages, company lunches at expensive London restaurants, and international calls made regularly on office telephones, all of which would be treated as business expenses. "We had, like, a thousand people that weren't needed," snarled Ringo. "But they all enjoyed it. They were all getting paid for sitting around. We had a guy there just to read the tarot cards, the I Ching. It was craziness."
The first two years of the company's existence also coincided with a marked worsening of the Beatles' relationships with each other, ultimately leading to the break-up of the band in April 1970. Apple quickly slid into financial chaos, which was resolved only after many years of litigation. When the Beatles' partnership was dissolved in 1975, dissolution of Apple Corps was also considered, but it was decided to keep it operating, while effectively retiring or mothballing all its divisions. The company is currently headquartered at 27 Ovington Square, in London's prestigious Knightsbridge district. Ownership and control of the company remains with McCartney, Starr and the estates of Lennon and Harrison.

Apple was by far the Beatles nuttiest idea. If they had used it to create their own private record company, build a studio, and take complete control of their publishing and future catalog, both solo and as the Beatles, it would have been a massive success.

They did create their own private record company, many of the solo albums appeared on Apple. They all had private studios in their houses.
Apple as a company is today worth an absolute fortune.

@@Richard369-h7s TRUE. But it wasn't successful until they eliminated the nutty part. The clothing store. Magic Alex. Giving money to un-serious artsy fartsy types, and that sort of thing. What it became is what it should have started out as. Youth, idealism and hippy culture, gave way to reality. With a few notable exceptions, most of their post Beatle work was recorded in commercial studios.

@@fredfox3851 Agree, and the start up of any company can be chaotic and idealistic.
However, the business was really only started as a tax dodging scheme, and it succeeded in that aim.
It also ensured that the band had full control over their catalogue. Yes the boutique closed, but the core of the business (or corps!) was a financial success. Apple Records made a fortune then and continues to.
Let's face it, they even got A huge payday by suing Apple Computers for infringing their rights.
Apple is always thought of as a failure. Perhaps the Beatles biggest. I just think some context is needed.
If my biggest failure was a billion dollar corporation controlled by good people who spread peace and love through music, I'd be pretty happy living that kind of shambles.

Apple Corporation seems like a classic example of what can happen when certain people try their hand at business without any savvy for it. Without having done proper research, I'm curious how they appeared to get back in motion roughly 16 years after The Beatles split up.

I met Debbie W, the Receptionist, January 1970, before an appointment to meet John (Lennon) at 3 Savile Row. Do/did you know Debbie, Lucy? I often wonder if that Lady is still with us. 💓

@@RHR-221bwow! Debbie Gendler was 1 of 728 American Beatles fans that go to go to The Ed Sullivan show. She was just 15, and was the 1st American Beatles Fan Club Pres. She's a published author and her latest book is titled: "I Saw Them Standing There" ...
I was 11 when I joined an official Beatles Fan Club. We would get a box from Liverpool ea. month filled w/what is called 'memorabilia' today.
Did you meet John Lennon as well as Debbie?

The Beatles should have planned it out more and smarter because they tried to do too many things so if they focused on the music like the publishing and signing artists under their label and maybe fashion because the Apple Boutique was a good concept but the prices weren't consumer friendly so if they could work on that then its not bad of a business

Zeppelin was accused of stealing riffs in the early to mid seventies.
