- Let's travel over to Japan to look at Fuji Q highland's Do Dodonpa. The world's fastest accelerating roller coaster and recently being known as the roller coaster that will break your spine. Yeah, even though this coaster has been open for 20 years. It just came under scrutiny for causing injuries to park guests. So allow me to try my best to dive into Do Dodonpa's recent closure. And figure out what will become of this powerful launch coaster.

A lot of these coaster accidents come down to COVID-induced staffing difficulties at the parks, which have taken a toll on maintenance. If that's the case at Fuji-Q as well, here it could just be from inadequately trained and overworked ride ops.
Man, you hit that nail on the head! I work roller coaster maintenance at a park. We are very short handed and most everyone, operators, maintenance, doesn’t matter, is fried right now!!
All of which, shutdowns, completely unnecessary.
When they reopened the ride they increased the speed and added a giant loop to a ride that was already one of the fastest. It’s too much. That’s what’s causing the spinal injuries.

I've been on it, and I can say the launch is INSANE. It's almost like getting rear ended by a semi truck that's doing 111 mph. I rode it when it still had the giant top hat, but since the launch has gotten even crazier, I can say that my comments are at least a lower bound on the experience.
I THINK it had lap bars when I rode it, and if you were to lean forward before the launch, it could hurt you pretty badly. My uncle had his head a bit too far forward because the launch tried to trick us out by pulling a fake launch. He leaned his head forward for a split second and they launched it without warning. He hit his head pretty hard and was out of commission for a few days. I had my head back, and even still the launch was one of the scariest things I've experienced on a ride. I can easily see this hurting people if they're leaning forward.
Thats why they say head back. Thats 100% your uncles fault.
@@coastersandcars no it definitely is. He underestimated the launch and didn't know what the trick was on it. Either way that launch is the most ridiculously crazy thing I've ever experienced on a coaster.

Hey man! Good video, 2 things:
1) I have spinal injuries from a 2005 car wreck, and rode Do-DoDonPa (back when it was just DoDonPa) in 2007 multiple times without even flaring up my injuries. So, yes, your theory is on point, and some Japanese news outlets even straight up said a likely cause was riders not fully stapling themselves to the seats (which, when I rode DoDonPa, they absolutely did that and told riders to have their heads back).
2) Just FYI (no big deal), but each 'o' in Do-DoDonPa is a long o, like both o's in DoDo Bird. Do-Do-Don-Pa is basically like Do, Re, Mi, but instead of measuring pitch it measures the beats on a Taiko drum :-).
The launch happens so fast it’s like the scene in Star Wars where they go into hyperspace! It happened so fast it was a small blur and it was over, the launch was smooth too! Too bad it’s gonna be closed for the rest of the season
From the faces that (used to be?) on the front of the trains, I would have thought its speeds was past light speed and into the territory of ludicrous speed like in Space Balls. 🤔
The reason these stories make headlines is because they're so relatively rare. Car accidents almost never get any real news because they happen thousands of times per day. Passenger plane accidents are talked about worldwide.
I've seen multiple cars completely on fire on the highway in my city and seeing no news, but when the inner-plastic panel on a passenger plane (that freight planes don't have) pops out of place, people make videos on how "ThE pLaNe CoUlD hAvE cRaCkEd In HaLf" but could it have? (Spoiler: The panel didn't crack, the panels are actually in multiple pieces, and slotted together inside with insulation between the frame and panels for passenger comfort)

Stapling won’t keep you on the backrest, it’ll only keep your thighs down.
Something I can add from having ridden it around the initial start of injury incidents, one train (I think pink) was running exceptionally rough and jackhammered like hell, and my back felt pretty awful afterward. Rode it again later in the day and got the other train (I think blue), and it ran much better. I'd honestly say the roughness on the turnaround into the loop is a bigger offender than the launch in terms of jacking up backs.
I LOVE being stapled in. I always ask the attendants to really push, I know it will click one more time. I'm sort of between clicks on most restraints and I'd much rather be a little squished than feel like I'm falling out when the ride inverts.
Also, I have a condition where my collagen is defective, something along those lines could easily be behind at least some of these injuries. It's a lot easier for you to be injured like that when your connective tissue isn't connecting your bones together properly.
I was improperly stapled into a ride once. I was so scared I couldn’t even call for help. I just held on as tight as I could prayed I wouldn’t fall tf out
I'm the same way but there's a point where I'm like that's too much and I was on an inversion and the damn restraint clicked in one more time and I'm like oh God 🤣

Just to say that the thoracic spine is just the vertebrae by the rib cage and doesn’t include the lumbar spine, which is by your abdomen.
I hope it re opens this was a massive bucket list coaster for me, I've done Stealth which is considered one of the fastest accelerations at 0-80mph in 1.8 seconds, that was intense as hell I cant even imagine doing 0-over 100mph in even LESS time than that. insane. pleasssssse re open
Rode this about 10 years ago and it’s still the most intense ride I have ever been on. I felt like all the blood went to my spine during the initial take off. Also, the timing is very unpredictable before launch. I swear the train clicked forward at least once to make you really uneasy. Crazy.
The footage of the launch is wild. It looks like something from an anime, or as another commenter mentions, the Millennium Falcon going into hyperspace.
What your saying isn't stupid, particularly on a lauch coaster. Don't get all tightened up, relax and make sure you're back and neck are comfortably against the back of the seat and where your neck sits.

You left out another possible scenario. There could be a "sue happy" attorney that searched until finding several people that had injuries from the ride, in order to bring a class action suit against the ride creators and/or the park.
Are people "sue happy" in Japan? People act like it's a US-only problem.
I am pretty sure it wasn’t not stapling the passengers, but rather people had the head or back to far forward when they launched.
Also, recently Do-Dodonpa increased it's acceleration for the loop renovation. So that would explain why there were none before.
That was done quite a few years back. I rode it in 2018 after the change and the force of the launch was great, but it wasn't painful or anything. I'm not really sure how you could get hurt unless you leaned forward just before the launch.

Fuji-Q has a 65 year old or younger restriction for all there major thrill coasters, well I guess now we know why…
I got to ride this in 2018. Was totally amazing. (Was due to return in early dec 2020 but was stopped by covid). I think you are spot on with your thoughts. Its a great ride however even in 2018 people still wouldnt sit back and keep their heads back as clearly instructed. I just hope it reopens before I visit in 2022. I want to go again. 😁
I really wonder if covid came with such a curse aganist roller coasters, for some reason, after covid, the k'nex roller coasters I have built in my room decided to constantly stall on top of inversions or tall elements.. I mean, come on.. it would haardly happen even if I wanted it to.. like, how on heck a model roller coaster stall on top of an inversion multiple times? I mean, why they don't just walley or hardly make it over as they did in the past?.. I mean, the physics are the same aren't them? Why something that was near impossible happens like daily?

I have a theory in addition to your staple theory... Do Dodonpa is faster now than it was for most of those 20 years. The launch has been jacked up and made even more intense since the addition of the loop, and maybe it just crossed that threshold where it's too much for the human body. It was probably on the edge as it was but just below it.

Top fuel dragsters launch with 6Gs and sustain it longer so the ride’s fine, though the speed increase did up the force a bit.
Assuming linear acceleration
0-172kph 1.8s - 2.71g (pre refurb)
0-180kph 1.56s - 3.26g (post refurb)
About .5g more on launch post refurb

I think you are spot on. Though also the track was altered and the speed was increased.. so maybe all 3 were the cause, not stapled, different design and higher speed and acceleration. maybe the lack of experienced staff during the crisis?
The fastest launch I’ve ever experienced was Maxx force at SFGA! And let me say, that was easily one of the most intense things I’ve experienced. I can’t even imagine how this ride feels

It's a good theory, I personally think that the cervical trauma is linked to people predisposed to it ( osteoporosis) and people that had their necks turned or extremely tense. After the g force and the hipertension of the neck muscles, this creates a tension fracture,. These are small fractures in the body of the vertebrate that don't incapacitate the patient, but are well associated with this type of situation.
The stapling idea is so far the most likely one I've heard. The only other possibility is that because covid meant the ride couldn't operate for a while that some issue has had time to manifest whilst there was a gap in maintenance which wasn't caught when the ride reopened. The problem is it's hard to pinpoint what exactly this could be if it is the case. The main idea I can think of is that maybe the hydraulics in the restraints may not be functioning to their full potential and as a result having a small amount of movement once locked in place that may give some guests too much room to sit forwards. Only issue with that is that the engineering team would almost definitely pick up on an issue with the restraints more so than anything else. All just theories and I hope that the future is bright for this absoloute monster of a ride.

I'm glad to see accident/risk dialog. Yes coasters are very safe, maybe not quite airline level but certainly better than coco taxis. I've wondered just where coasters rank. I'd bet more injuries and deaths happen getting to and from parks than in parks.
I rode this in 2018 and we were SO STRAPPED in…. We couldn’t move an inch. I feel like if people were getting hurt, they may have not followed instructions on sitting back properly and keeping their heads back.
Also…. This ride was the craziest feeling I’ve ever experienced. It’s so unbelievably fast that you feel like you’re being crushed 😹 you can’t scream, much less even breathe!!! I got off the ride in absolute shock and I started crying from the surprise 😂😂 it was a full cry but my eyes just started watering and I had zero control over the tears and stress my body was trying to regulate lmao. Best and worst thing ever. 10/10 would do it again.
I went on Maxx Force at six flags great America and it doesn’t break your spine but the second airtime hill after the drop on American eagle destroys your spine, intact I call it the “Spine Smasher”
I don't avoid coasters because I think they're dangerous, I avoid them because I don't like having the shit scared out of me.
I've never been on this ride, so the most intense launch coaster I've been on is Kingda Ka. The seats on that ride are designed so that you're always sitting all the way back, and there's an announcement just before the launch that says "arms down, heads back, hold on". If the seats on Do Dodonpa are designed so that you can sit forward, then that's a major design flaw and I think would've caused problems before now.
You need to experience an air launch. They're bonkers and there is nothing like them.
I live in Australia and was at Dreamland a few days before four people died from a raft flipping over on a river rapids ride and that was one of the ‘safer’ rides. It’s sad how just one malfunction can cause such carnage. Some of the paramedics needed counselling afterwards because the ‘clean up’ was so horrific.!

Ive been on this whilst the rugby world cup was in japan. If you push your back and head into the seat then youll be fine! The launch was something ive never experienced before! You just cant catch your breath!
So bummed I never got to experience this. I fear this isn't going to be opening again sadly or if it does, it will be with a greatly diminished launch.
I had this same though. It has to be riders not listening to the workers telling to sit back in your see and keep you had back. Who knows but I agree with you. 💯%
Been on TTD and MaxxForce at SFGAm. TTD feels like a smooth acceleration in a sports car - powerful, but not jerky. MaxxForce feels like I got blindsided by a bull. I can't imagine how crazy a launch like this is, doing almost 40 mph more than MF in less time. If I ever go to Japan I'd love to go on it, but I think I'd legitimately be freaked out.

Well the ride has been officially closed for good now I would of loved to experience that launch. But I do still want to go to Japan one day.
This is the only coaster that I'm not sure I would be brave enough to go on. It took me a long time to get over my fear of launch coasters but this one I'm still not sure about lol.

Is it 4.3 acceleration Gs or horizontal Gs because the highest g on the ride is probably the positive force
I Litteraly went last year and rode it 2 times it was SOOOOO FUN!! We are going to fuji q again tmmr and I was looking forward to it but I heard it was closed 🙁
I haven't gotten my spine broken on a rollercoaster (yet) but I have gotten my back/neck injured. I was at kings island back in 2019 and I rode the racer. I don't know who to blame but, 1st of all my restraints weren't tight enough to the point I almost fell (I was really small, I was only 65Ib). Then near the end I got thrown a really weird way and hurt my neck/back.

I rode Maxx Force and it’s so fast, the acceleration, the speed, and of corse the length of the ride
I went on it many years ago in its original configuration. It was a blast! but knowing that you would accelerate so fast, only an idiot wouldn't have their head already flush with the headrest before launch. Also, because you go so fast, once you take off, your body (neck) will stay in that position [because of the force] until you reach airtime in the vertical drop; the "top hat". Then you can at least re-position. Maybe with the new loop, you don't get that brief relief of stress and your neck suffers force through the entirety of the ride.
Also, despite the countdown before launch--which is clearly heard by all, including those waiting in line--I've read that it's sometimes unpredictable and maybe the riders were not quite ready for the launch. In my case, I don't remember that happening. All I can say, is that it was one of the most memorable roller coasters I've ever been in, and I'm disappointed it lost that 90 degree vertical drop. I don't remember if there was one or two of them, but it was a great feeling of air-time that a loop just doesn't provide.

I can confirm that employees at the park do not touch your lap bar as of November of last year. They make you confirm that you're strapped in, also coincidently, this ride was not in operation at the time, I had heard that the park experimented with the speed of the ride and that resulted in the most recent injuries but that could have just been speculation. I DO know that the time I went the park had a much bigger emphasis on proper seating posture to the point I had to listen to a literal ted talk before every ride. Not sure if its related or not tho lol

i’m starting to doubt it’s the launch. i’ve seen people on reddit talk about a pothole where the new loop connects from the old track, it could be false but a possibility to why spines were being broken.
I have a hard time believing that the employees are to blame, mostly because Japanese are far more strict about workplace ethics than America. While it's certainly possible that the park would hire incompetent workers that didn't give a damn about their job, it's not very likely.
honestly i think ur ideas are pretty likely, my best guess is this: a mix of covid regulatipns and employees not being able to touch restraints, and mayeb lazier staff bc of the recent worker shortages caused restraints to not be as tight. the reason that this is so rare then is probably that the peiple riding that got injured had some sort of existing condition, like having slightly weaker bones from aging, disease, or maybe a former back injury that was mostly healed but had minor permanent damage. these conditions were never formerly reported bc of stapling so people with minor back conditions were not cautioned against riding this
Lol thoracic spine fractures/injuries are specifically in the thoracic region of the spine. So basically the ribcage area.
Fractures in the lumbar region of the spine are called lumbar fractures...

People's posture has also been degrading with the amount of time using screens; this would also naturally cause a problem.
Wear and tear on the seat and padding may have a say into this cause not sure on japanese restrictions and safety over time , but over 20 years things could have deteriorated and may have been overlooked... It's just a suggestion and thought to me that this may have occurred too.
Just like a automobile in weather we soon need to replace this car cause of this so just a thought cause rollercoasters are in the weather especially in Japan when rain is seems to be in the forecast there 24/7 in many areas of Japan especially in spring and fall.
That is exactly what happend with expoland raijin 2! but then the government made new laws and i truly hope rides get better maintenance nowadays in Jspan.

I rode do-dodonpa in 2019, I think it was in august? I was 9 at the time, and I was 146 centimeters tall. I put my arms up before the launch, and boy that was a big mistake.
What did it do?
It’s from people who don’t keep their head back and/or lean forward on the launch
I wonder if some of these amusement parks have skimped on service to save money because of the pandemic and that’s what is causing the rides to become more rough?

these restraints are impossible to not be stapled on. I dont think that it was the operators fault.

my brother hurt his back (not seriously) on the grand national at Blackpool... its really old now and the ride is rough, there's a sign outside warning about the rough ride... 20 years ago it was not that rough at all, it was a smooth ride

Sure the bullet train is fun to ride but this thrill is what makes Japan so special, without it, this main attraction is not that fun until you ride this.

2. Some people may have a hereditary diseases like spondilises i.e like a small bone fracture in the spine. These can seriously be dangerous on rides like do - donpa. Or only possible theory is the speed problem that is passing the limit of 111km/hr.
