    Harry Kreisler asks great questions. He is a excellent interviewer and allows his guests to the space and time to cover a broad range of interrelated issues. A lot was covered in 60

    Pakistan is described as a “negotiated state,” where the balance of power and the negotiation between different societal groups are key to maintaining stability.

    Super important to read Professor Wael Hallaq’s book, “Sharia: Theory, Practice, Transformations” (Cambridge University Press, 2009)
    Institutions born of one regime of sense/Tradition cannot easily be transplanted and imposed on a place and populace of an entirely different regime of sense/Tradition - except where blind colonial attempts to brute-force it take place unsuccessfully and unsustainably over long periods of time.

    One of the few Western thinkers, who has an incisive and in depth understanding of Pakistan. I really admire the way he appreciates and understands the societal fabric of Pakistan which almost all the world is oblivious of.
    He praised the presence of a very well organized and efficient department, the Army and is aware of the importance of Army and its involvement in the state matters.
    People need to remember, we have a mandatory Military presence in Pakistan, because we were born to survive. State of Pakistan has been at war, ever since its birth.
    Pakistani nationalism doesn't fall under the same category as nationalism usually does fall in. Religion is an innate trait instilled in the hearts and souls of general public and is above national identity.
    I would recommend his book and research to anyone who wants to understand Pakistan and misconceptions about it. That shall clear a lot of the things up.

    • @theallseeingeye9388
      @theallseeingeye9388 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting mind set.
      Born to survive.
      Hence we needed a mandatory military presence?
      Where would have the military gone had it not been asked or allowed to be present?
      Would it have gone back to protecting the countries borders and help with humanitarian needs in and around Pakistan?
      Who would build a ship and fit a gun that is big enough to sink it as soon as it sails?
      Not even navys that know the ship is going to be engaged from day 1 and they are going to need all the firepower they can fit on it.

    Somewhat dated but nevertheless excellent & still relevant analysis of some of the most pressing problems & political situation in Pakistan. Including relationships with some of its neighbours and wider outside world particularly USA. Don’t expect to see such clarity and honesty from the the Pakistani establishment or its journalists. They’re more likely say what their paymasters tell them to say who may be the military or political classes. Furthermore their educational system, with the exception of the few establishments, is not geared for a questioning or analytical approach to society or its norms. I say this as child of immigrants from Pakistan educated in the UK. Therefore able to see the country in a detached non emotional way.

    Yes the country is hard even harsh in many aspects, but its this harshness which makes the people stronger than its adversaries. The only thing holding back the Pakistani people is the absence of significant land reform. If you think of the concept of a rotten borough where the landowner owns the voters and the elected official, then Pakistan is a rotten country. Its hope in the future is not in western style democracy, nor in tribal allegiances but rather to fulfil its destiny as a muslim state

    • @coreycox2345

      @@coreycox2345feudal hereditary landlords own literally every usable inch while the population living on it are still playing the role of serfs under the same terms, bondage debt slavery is still widely practiced.
      The feudal landlords are inter related and connected with the military and political elites..
      These feudal landlords were the original sponsors and funders of the infamous Afghani Mujahideen. Not to chase the russians out because of any sense of nationalism but because of the upcoming land retorms and redistribution.
      The Brits gave Pakistanis independence to the same ckub of Anglophiles and British educated local elites who were already part of the local members employed by or for the colonial administration office.

    The disproportionate pharaonic chunk of budget in addition with commercial adventures the military officials are awarded with a massive portion of land, thus stopping them from corruption, but the Police has to raise money by perversion to secure their retirement.

  • @umbertodferrari

    Since when did the Taliban become Wahabi? I thought they were a radical faction of the Deobandis.

    • @bilal59446
      @bilal59446 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Its almost the same concept.
      Think of Deobands/Wahabis as Iconoclasts/Orthodox Christians and Barelvis as Catholics.
      And please, none of them are radical. Its the small minority of people and their heinous actions that are radical.
      Deoband Madrassas(Schools) were and still are funded by Saudi Arabia who practice the Salafi/Wahabi faction of Islam.
      Once again, its very complicated yet very simple. For you, it will be tough to understand. Pakhtoons, Afghans and Islam, the western profound concepts of Nationalism do not apply to them the same way.
      Only Pakistanis can understand and run Pakistan. The crux of the discussion.
      PS. We do NOT want to bomb India, we want you to be our peaceful neighbor, and as peaceful neighbor, we must resolve the Kashmir Issue according to the will of the Kashmiri people. If they side with India, so be it, its their right, but first let us get there. Otherwise, insurgency from both sides is gonna keep on continuing.
