Princess Diana in Angola - Rare and Unseen Footage of Campaign Against Landmines (1997)

  • On 13 January 1997, Diana, Princess of Wales arrived in Angola to assist the Red Cross in their international campaign to ban anti-personnel landmines. Ravaged by decades of war, Angola at the time suffered the highest rate of casualties caused by landmines left in the earth - an often-lethal legacy of conflicts passed. This archival footage covers the Princess of Wales' first three days in Angola, and includes the now-iconic footage of Diana being shown around a minefield in the Angolan city of Huambo. While Diana devoted her time to many charitable causes, the campaign against landmines is one of the humanitarian causes with which she is most closely associated. Her work in the field has most recently been dramatised as part of series six of The Crown. Focused largely around the final months of Princess Diana's life as well as her death, the series stars Elizabeth Debicki in the role of Diana and Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II.

Two most important causes Princess Diana highlighted with her heart and soul were AIDS and land mines. 7 months after this visit she passed away. What a very sad and great loss! ❤️

I love this woman with all my heart, and still deeply mourn her loss- she was an amazing humanitarian, and a courageous and diplomatic individual ❤ i have always wondered what other campaigns She would have spear-headed, how many other lives she would have changed for the better, had she not been killed off..
May you always rest in peace, Princess Diana, the Queen of hearts for the whole world ❤
Your legacy and spirit will live on forever..

Prncess Diana did things according her heart. She was desperate to help the aids people. She was even prepared to give them a handshake and talk to each of them. Then hwr visit to Angola to stop the land mines. That cost guts to went into Angola. But she did it. On the way she saw a woman crying. She asked the driver to stop. Go to the woman that lost her son in a landmine accident. Then princess Ddiana hugged her so much and talk to her. There again she showed her heart of gold to others. Theres so much more. But one thing is sure nobody else will do that. She was a real angel in the world. We will forever keep the princess in our hearts as she was the queen of peoples hearts!!!! ❤❤🌹🌹🤴🌹🌹❤❤❤❤

Diana and Charles officially separated in 1992. After 1992, the boys were in boarding school all week and spent alternating weekends with Diana and Charles. In other words, Diana was seeing the boys approximately two weekends a month. She took them to public places like theme parks and McDonald's, where they were photographed by the paparazzi and created an image of Diana as a good mother.

Diana was providing public relations and publicity for the Red Cross and HALO projects to ban landmines. After the divorce and reduction in providing publicity to charities, Diana was recreating her public image as a humanitarian. She was there to use her celebrity status for publicity and photo opportunities. Diana's walk through the minefield in Angola was a publicity stunt. She was never at risk of injury.

By 1984, Diana understood the value and power of the public media and she used it to her advantage. Diana made connections with the paparazzi to ensure maximum publicity for her royal duties. She was exceptionally good at gaining publicity for her assigned charities and for herself. Diana visited the charities to gain public support for charities. She was also there for the photo opportunities to draw attention to herself and create a very positive public image of herself.
The big difference between Diana and the royals is Diana got a lot more publicity. She overshadowed the royal family and hogged the limelight.
Diana was assigned patronage for 30 to 100 charities as part of her royal duties. She was most active in 1992. After the divorce she was reduced to 6 charities.
By comparison, Princess Anne is patron or president of over 300 charities. Charles established several charities and supports 400 to 800 charities. Queen Elizabeth supported over 600 charities and annually raised $1.4 billion for charities. Diana's charitable activities are pale by comparison.

      Jenny,
My point is that the only reason Diana became a worldwide popular celebrity was because she married Charles. The public media would not have been interested in her if she had not been part of the royal family.
The Red Cross and HALO projects would not have been interested in Diana providing publicity if she wasn't already a public figure.
The royal family enabled Diana to become a celebrity. Instead of being a supportive member of the monarchy, Diana was competitive for public attention and overshadowed the royal family.
And, she was exceptionally good at gaining publicity for charities, humanitarian causes, and herself. Her walk through the minefield was a publicity stunt. She was there for the publicity.
