In the Netherlands we had of course also suffered from this, someone had put the jammer in one of the antennas in a transmission tower, the batteries (actually a capacitor) were charged by the antenna radiation. Pretty genius

Imagine the chaos caused nowadays if some random person came across a black box with an antenna attached to it left in place somewhere.
Let alone if it was even broadcasting anything.

This was also done in the early repeater days in the US. It stopped when some hams were found bloodied behind the local pub or had their coax cut to bits.
To be historic, till repeaters were activated, 75 Meter phone was most often the local (groundwave) chat band. 2 meters AM being rather limited fixed or mobile. This caused great divisions in local ham groups often splitting into two different clubs. Then there were the CBers who upgrading or not, who thought disruption was jolly good fun.

Similar devices found in the U.S., both in the Amateur Radio & Citizen Band Spectrum. Some of the little buggers were pretty creative. It's interesting that this sort of thing wasn't isolated to just one area. Human Creativity....

Plenty of jammers round these parts still, mostly over in Daventy on GB3XX, when I say jammers read that as mostly local hams pontificating all day long in a tight group that could use simplex, its odd its either repeaters dont get used at all or the get used by a small selection of hams who almost certainly also have something to do with the repeater and dont want anyone else to use it. Great video though mate, I used to hear the LPWS on all the time when I first got licenced, he used to get on the Leamington repeater, to be honest I found it funny but I was just a kid back then.

    • @gb5uq
      @gb5uq 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

They used to play some good music on Charlie Fox. Good repeater when it was clear. I used to be able to open it from a hand held Beofeng running half a Watt 40 miles away. 3XX has to be one of the worst, most of the time it seems down. Two metres has been dead in Daventry for years. Now they are messing with 23cms so now Daventry has three bands to listen to static from.

It would be most interesting to consider some additional contextual information concerning the motivations (purported, presumed, speculated, etc.) of the jamming group in addition to the technical information and history of the incident presented here. I’m sure most of us have some familiarity with strange, often acrimonious, but sometimes apparently just silly jamming activities that seem well out of proportion to any potential benefit to those responsible. Providing some insight as to how this satisfies (or fails to, as the case may be) the people involved would be appreciated.

Hello Lewis great video as ever. I heard the laughing policeman only today on GB3CR probably between 2-3pm.
I want to try fox hunting at some point. I find it interesting on how to find these type of things.

If you think these guys got away with it, you are completly wrong.
Karma is a bitch and when someone goes a long way to harm other people, really bad things come back to them.
I wouldn't envy these guys, they will get what they asked for.....big way.
We just won't know it but THEY WILL !!!!!!

@@RingwayManchester thank you so much for your answer 🙏.
      What I meant is this:
The general public thinks that someone doing something and apparently not being caught means he got away with it, but in fact that is not the case.
Once you do something wrong to someone that bad beahviour sticks to you and one way or the other you are going to pay , no matter if you believe it or not.
It is a Universal undodgeable Law.
The ignorance of this is what leads criminals and bad people to do all those horrible things you see on daily news.
In fact, they don't even dream that they are harming themselves 10 times fold to what they did to fellow citizens.
Is like getting a machine gun and start shooting themselves !!!!
Only when they see the blood getting out of their body they realize it was a mistake.
      What I mean is:
Although jamming radio relays is not a capital crime, it reveals that the envolved are willing to go a long way to harm other human beeings. And that tells a thing or two about those people. It is such a bad sign that someone as the focus on harming others !!!
Justice never fails. The problem is that people thinks that Justice is related to courts but that is not true. Courts should not be used when one's talk about Justice.
Justice is a automatic process that NO ONE can dogde. Courts are ligitimate, but only as a general Society self-defense and chaos avoidance system. Not as a "justice" provider.
So, althought jamming is a lesser crime in Society, they WILL GET what they asked for !!! Only you probably won't know about it, but THEY WILL !!!!
(sorry for sounding so dramatic, but I think I couldn't let fellow hams think those poor shadows of a human being would get away with this unpunished....)

Why would someone spend so much time, effort, and money just to jam a repeater? What do they gain from doing something like this? Whomever was the culprits must have had no life.

It is a group and yes back in the 90's (93 i think) some did appear before the courts and be charged. A couple before the courts that i remember (and also documented on the internet by other sources) were David Giles-Probert and Robert George Hitchcock G1MTT. Hitchcock lived in Redditch. In addition to MH abuse to repeaters in Worcestershire can also be found documented on the net up until 2018. It has still been on-going though with abuse to repeaters in Warwickshire. Strangely on the occasions hunters have gone out the signal is coming from, guess where, Redditch! Same squeaky voice moronically rambling on as on the end of the video and on occasions accompanied by old time music along the lines of George Formby.

It's unfortunate that intelligent, technically-minded individuals find pleasure in ruining others' enjoyment of their hobby. I'm also a bit sad that these jammers weren't swiftly identified and shut down. We have a healthy number of active fox-hunting individuals in my area, and such disruptions would neither be accepted nor allowed to continue unchecked. I've personally found and helped fix several APRS transmitters accidentally squawking on the local repeaters in my area, and that's with a half-second transmission every five minutes. Others around here have similar skills / experience / gear to perform the same feats. Maybe having hams in the area that are willing and able to take on jamming signals is all that's required to discourage such antisocial behavior.
