  • Paul Childerley is after squirrels. They are chewing up the water pipes in his pheasant pens, and this is the time of year they greys tuck into songbird nests, eating eggs and chicks. He is out with fellow gamekeeper Scott, to deal with the animals and their dreys in woodland on his shoot. It's the latest in his Modern Gamekeeper series

    Why shoot grey squirrels?
Grey squirrels are invasive pests, not native to the UK. They impact on our native wildlife, raiding nests to prey on eggs and fledglings, and they are responsible for the decline in native red squirrel numbers, likely because they carry but are immune to the parapox virus, which is fatal to red squirrels . The Wildlife Trusts estimate there are only around 140,000 native red squirrels left in the UK, compared to 2.5 million grey squirrels.
Grey squirrels cause damage to trees such as beech, oak, sycamore and chestnut. They strip bark at the base of trees which causes them to weaken and eventually to die. The UK Forestry Commission estimates grey squirrels causes £6-10 million damage to British forestry per year.
Grey squirrels have been known to damage houses and buildings by chewing on woodwork, insulation and electrical wires. They can also contaminate cold water tanks with urine and droppings. It has been illegal to keep grey squirrels (without a licence) since 1937, and it is illegal to release them into the wild.
Grey squirrels’ predators include stoats, goshawks and foxes, leaving gamekeepers, foresters and airgunners to do the main job of eradicating them. A coalition of airgunners across Anglesey successfully removed grey squirrels from the island. Other groups in Cumbria and Cornwall aim to do the same, with support from the government and private enterprise.

I live in Upstate NY and have never shot at a squirrel drey, but also couldn't find anything on the NYSDEC website or anywhere else on the internet, so I emailed the D.E.C. and asked, and believe it or not they didn't know the answer and emailed a wildlife biologist for the answer (for them as well as me) and I was told it is legal to shoot them out of there nests, the babies are born between March & April when hunting season for them is closed, but its an ethical thing! What if an owl or any other protected animal might be in it that isn't in season or protected...its no excuse that you couldn't see what it was in the nest.

Glock 17 that's because it's an indigenous species to you but to us, the Grey Squirrel is invasive. However I see your point an agree. Shooting blind like that may kill a roosting bird, Red Squirrel or even protected Dormice or other protected species. The point is the shooter cannot be sure just what is making use of that drey so must be regarded as bad practice. The only sure way is to target them individually on a feeder with a rifle.

@@Biffo1262 The U.S. has many different laws pertaining to shooting squirrels and/or their nests, it really depends on which state you live in and also the local ordinances.
Where I live, in Virginia, you can kill these bastards all year around IF you live outside of a city or town and IF you are shooting them on your own property.
I live in a rural area and I have had to clip over 2 dozen of these pests because they keep stealing my wife's birdseed. I can't stand these things. My single shot 20 Guage gets the job done most of the time. Cheers mate!

Agreed Drey shooting No Bueno. Just went hunting today with my Hatsan 125 Vortex Camo in .22. That things averaging 28FPE and is very accurate. I can hit a dime at 25yds 9/10 times and even the miss is marginal but it rather loud for an air rifle but using JSB Hades they are dead before they fall (quarter turned) at 11° elevation. That JSB Hades 15.89g round must expand and break the squirrels neck resulting in the cleanest kill I’ve seen ever and more than I’ve seen on most 22 powder burners. Used a JSB 18.13g at same distance and elevation and it took about 5sec after shot for no movement lights out. Went through clean but didn’t have that added expansion damage. Waiting on my Sig ASP20 Whiskey 3 combo .22 in synthetic.

Thought I could allow em in the lower 1/2 acre here to the wash and just cull em from the yard proper. Well, the population exploded on the lower 1/2 and it was time tend that. Got em cleared for a few months. Today the 1st one came in. 1=50 if leave the issue unattended. I use a Crosman Custon Shop CO-2 RK2400. Can't burn powder because the neighbors are simply too close. The migration is starting to go down. Took one off the wood pile 20 yards away. Through the mouth and out the brain stem. I totally anticipate many more as the Autumn migration goes down. Once they get comfortable and start breeding about the yard getting rid of them is real PITA. I've taken them out to 40 yards with 3.5" of holdover on a scope sighted to 20 yards through the head with my most custom CO-2 carbine.

20 guage long barrel shotgun hardly damages the tree. Usually doesn't go all the way through the squirrel especially at 25+yards. Also depending on the air gun you get the air gun will do more damage to the tree if you miss. Just my personal opinion though 😉

I even saw a bunch of crows[SMART birds!]going and picking in holes in the trees, snagging the wormy looking spawn of the rats, gulping them whole.Wish I had video of that...now I'm waiting for the bleeding heart tree hugger remarks.

If you are on a Pheasant or Game Farm, and you are feeding the birds to keep them in the area, why not put up a Peanut feeder and take them out with a nice Daystate. Far more quiet and the the chance you will plug more than two is way way greater.... Ask those guys that use to publish "Air Heads" It was a wonderful show about Air Guns and their Kit.... and remember, They were "Aiming for accuracy, targeting the truth" - Just ask David. if you can't afford a Daystate, you could look up FX air guns or if you like to stay buying from those lovely English lads... Brocock are a nice bit if kit with some Sportsmatch mounts and MTC scope... ( have I plugged everyone? ) Living In Wisconsin, USA our DNR (Department of Natural Recourses), may not have a Rule about shooing the nest, however, our Wardens are not above finding some problem with your hunt, i.e., Signature on your Small Game Licensee not done in the right shade of blue ink, or if done in Black, it is not dark enough or it is too dark, you gun is too new or too old.. they'll find something...

@@osmiumsoul9535 It's not hunting - it's pest control. The grey squirrel is an alien invasive species in the UK and causes untold damage to trees and wildlife. Not dissimilar to the cane toad in Australia. There is no close season, it's illegal to release a live trapped one into the wild - in other words, they (with the government's blessing) are trying to eradicate them, not hunt them for sport.

Non native invasive species. Devastating to the natural ecology. They are killed all year round. It would be unethical to not kill them
