- October, 1953 ten year old Gayla Peevey appeared on The ED SULLIVAN Show to sing her #1 smash hit, "I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas." As a result children across AMERICA saved their pennies and a baby hippopotamus named, "Maltilda" was delivered to Gayla's home on Christmas Eve morning. Maltilda the Hippo was later donated to the Oklahoma City Zoo where she lived for 45 years.
The Somers Dream Orchestra is honored and proud to dedicate this video to Gayla Peevey, Matilda the Hippo and the late great Ed Sullivan.
The Ed Sullivan Show appeared every Sunday evening on CBS Television for 23 years with exactly 10,000 performances. Mr. Sullivan truly changed the course of music history forever!
This is not Ed Sullivan but a actor playing him. This is not Gayle Pervey, but an actress playing her. It is a tribute video. Read the super titles in the video. It is all explained there. Yes, even at 10 Gayle had a better voice.
