I went to see the latest version at the Bridge Theatre last night, which is more of an immersive staging. We were sat as I can't stand for the full duration of a show, but it was a very clever way of staging that I felt I could experience just as well from the gallery. It has to be said that Cedric Neal as Nicely was incredible in Sit Down You're Rocking the Boat. Three encores, each getting better and better. Not seen a live performance quite like it. Because so many of the audience are surrounding the stage in the centre of the space, and it being a comparatively small space to begin with, there was a really sense of involvement from everyone many of whom were dancing along (and encouraged to do so). I was still bopping to it as I got off the train a couple of hours later.
I caught that show a couple of weeks ago, that was really something else. To be fair though, the separately-rising stage panels are very unique so not every place could replicate that.
Saw this TONIGHT in the West End!! One of the best renditions of Sit Down I've ever heard - I was virtually screaming at the end of it! The MD has to get some serious praise for this absolutely sick arrangement!
I can't believe you actually commented something like this. This is absolutely the worst version of Guys and Dolls I have ever seen, including the high school versions. Disgusted.
Saw this about two weeks before Rebel went in. Have to say it's the best production of Guys & Dolls the West End has ever seen, even better than the 2005 production with Ewan McGreggor and Jane Krakowski. It was massivly underrated by audiences, it's one of the best things I've ever seen. So well crafted, musically as well as on stage. Also the best Olivier performance to date along-side The Book of Mormon I think
Just saw this on tour... staged exactly the same, and it's simply FANTASTIC live. They reprised he final few bars twice after the song & once before curtain, it was so popular. Only downside is that I now can't get it out of my head aha.
I watched this 4 days ago (on 20/07/16 - with Rebel whom I adore!! ), but I agree. Nicely Nicely absolutely blew everyone out of their seats! Seeing it live was absolutely exhilarating! The audience were enthralled with his performance. Nicely done Mr Nicely Nicely
I dreamed last night I got on the boat to heaven And by some chance I had brought my dice along And there I stood And I hollered "Someone fade me" But the passengers, they knew right from wrong. For the people all said sit down, sit down, you're rockin' the boat People all said sit down Sit down you're rockin' the boat. And the devil will drag you under By the sharp lapel of your checkered coat, Sit down, sit down, sit down, sit down, Sit down you're rockin' the boat. I sailed away on that little boat to heaven And by some chance found a bottle in my fist And there I stood,Nicely passin' out the whisky But the passengers were bound to resist For the people all said beware You're on a heavenly trip People all said beware Beware, you'll scuttle the ship. And the devil will drag you under By the fancy tie 'round your wicked throat Sit down, sit down, sit down, sit down Sit down, you're rockin' the boat And as I laughed at those passengers to heaven (laughs) (gasps!) A great big wave came and washed me over board! And as I sank And I hollered "someone save me!" That's the moment I woke up Thank the lord And I said to myself, sit down, sit down, You're rockin' the boat! Said to myself sit down, sit down, you're rockin' the boat And the devil will drag you under With a soul so heavy you'd never float, Sit down, sit down, sit down Sit down, sit down, sit down, you're rockin' the boat
Always remember doing this show with Gloucester Operatic and Dramatic Society 11 years ago tonight. Very sadly the person who played Nicely Nicely Johnson had a heart attack and died during the run of the show (not whilst performing) and we also performed this song at his funeral.
It certainly works. I still love the original Stubby Kaye version, while the Walter Bobbie version from 1992 is my favorite, but this is close behind those.
Just brilliant, 🙌🏼😍will be coming to see you on Sunday, my 11 year old son, has just played "Benny Southstreet" for his school production, we both find ourselves singing all the songs around the house, and talking in New Yoik, accents hahaha, bit weird when your still at it in the local sainsburys! so any racket coming from the middle will be us two! Can't wait:)
+Vianne Furey you are the sweetest, thank you so much for your lovely comment! I can't wait to see his reaction:) I ain't gonna lie, I think I'm more excited! Hahaha, Take carexx
+Vianne Furey thank you so much, I certainly will let him know you say hi and he will be so Flipping impressed you played Sarah Brown, I think ( and hope:)) he's got the acting bug too! Wishing you every success in your future career, exciting times ahead! Woo hoo 🙌🏼🙌🏼 all the best:)
Would it be possible to get the film of this show? We also want to perform this musical and I thought I would get such a great template with which I can personally learn. That's why my question. Greetings Simon What a wonderful play!!!! Would be wonderful if you can tell me if there's a film!
I wish he did it sincerely like Stubby Kaye. This actor hams it up too much and it doesn’t carry the same transformative plot point as in the film. When Stubby Kaye did this number, you BELIEVED his character truly had found religion and genuinely wanted to change his life. Which adds to the plot and sort of validates the Mission as a legitimate member of the neighborhood. In this performance, the actor does the opposite- this version of Nicely Nicely seems to mock the Mission and gives the audience the feeling the Mission is an outsider in the community; the butt of an inside joke rather than an accepted part of the community.
There'll never be another Stubby Kaye: he had the art of under-playing and letting the song do the work.. This actor has a lovely voice but the presentation is over-acted and far too ''busy'' ... and rather slow!
Definitely agree. This is so overacted that you miss the point of the number. All the cho reography in the second part simply destroys everything. Stubby Kaye in the film is pure perfection.
It's been a few years since this, but, Wow, what a perfectly good way to ruin a number originally created perfect by its simplicity. The problem with Broadway musicals these days - everything has to be a show stopper. I think it should be referred to as "The Greatest Showman Syndrome." No fault to the actors or Nicely Nicely.
Smarty Marty I see what you are saying, but I disagree. This number was originally created in the stage show to be a showstopper number. This and Luck be a Lady are the two big numbers in the musical. I believe they ruined this number by not making it enough of a showstopper and too slow and dreary.
I dreamed last night I got on the boat to heaven And by some chance I had brought my dice along And there I stood And I hollered "Someone fade me" But the passengers, they knew right from wrong. agreed. I played Nicely years ago and although the music is slick to begin with, the MDs ending was spectacular!
The arrangement is so vanilla, particularly when you compare it to the 1992 NT and Broadway revivals.
I can't believe you actually commented something like this. This is absolutely the worst version of Guys and Dolls I have ever seen, including the high school versions. Disgusted.
I love the unique twist they added at 2:54

Totally agree... amazing performance
The choreography shines here.
This is everything a musical number should be! Fantastic!
OUTSTANDING VERSION EVER! MERCI BEAUCOUP FROM PARIS FRANCE. Emmanuel
Just saw this on tour... staged exactly the same, and it's simply FANTASTIC live. They reprised he final few bars twice after the song & once before curtain, it was so popular. Only downside is that I now can't get it out of my head aha.
I am mesmerized by the entire construct of this number. Incredible performances and a standing ovation for the choreography!

Oh finally I loved the ending. Always feel folks bum it, but these folks kicked it out!
brings back great memories of my childhood, great music!
Hey sit down yer rockin' the boat!! Bravo bravo!!
I LOVE what Cartwright did here!!!!!
Love it, I had the great opportunity to play #BigJule😎🎩💯👊💯💯💯
Bravo for this incredible incomparable rendering version! MERCI BEAUCOUP! Emmanuel from Paris France
He should be an actor for Winston Churchill!
He was!
So this is how the allies won the war
Don’t think Churchill ever appeared in musical comedy.
Wow! Great version of this tune! Kudos!
I saw this last night they also reprised the final few bars it was amazing. Nicely Nicely absolutely killed it!
Was this at the Phoenix Theatre London? Because I went to see it and they did that and it was AMAZING.
+Laura Thomas yes! It was amazing!
+Intronerd I saw this at Phoenix too! This guy was so much funnier than rebel wilson's character 😂
Saw this at the Savoy Theatre it was AMAZING

Saw this production just before they changed the cast to include Rebel Wilson (thank god) and it was absolutely fantastic!
Who could Rebel Wilson play in this? She's too fat for any of the characters...
@@PapagenoMF damn bro not cool
Definitely taking inspiration from this guy. I got auditions in a month
Best performance of this number EVER!
Congratulations Andy! This is fabulous! xXx

Love this!
This is a good take, but Stubby Kaye's rendition is far better, IMO. This singer has a better voice and better range, but Kaye nailed it.
The part of Nicely-Nicely was pretty much written for Stubby.
Yep. th-cam.com/video/nJq7J2uzSlc/w-d-xo.html
Yes no one will ever do it as well.
Stubby Kaye can't be duplicated...so you don't try. This rendition is entirely different. That is the point. Mo need to criticize it.
Movies and live are different, also.
Looks brilliant!
very very good.....the broadway Tony performance is terrific too
Amazing
This was about the best!!!!
Amazing show!!!! :D
Wow..never heard the scat version before. It was...interesting.

How nice.
This guy is playing the King in Hamilton now and is superb.
Thanks I needed that💫
Hi, I’m Mrs Enver Gortash and I weep uncontrollably at musicals
Awesome!
Just noticed Jason Pennycooke (Lafayette/Jefferson in Hamilton)!
That's my buddy from Northwestern, Richard Kind, as Nathan Detroit!
I LOVE Richard Kind. Is he as awesome as he seems?
@@intheatremode You mean Harvey Korman in Scrubs

It is my life long dream to hit notes that high
The high note is the woman
that is literally a middle G
I am a high school baritone and i can still hit that note
Elias Bernstein well not everyone’s you hun.
Wish I could of seen this with Richard Kind
Anyone know where I could find sheet music for this arrangement?
Google
Would it be possible to get the film of this show?

What a wonderful play!!!! Would be wonderful if you can tell me if there's a film!
OH
im am doing this in my school
cool
this song gives me ptsd, my drama teacher made us do a dance to this song

Right analysis. Used to enjoy this song in the film version, this one seems shameful
Completely different from the 90's version. Did Loesser write it this way or did some other hired composer come and and alter it?
Dwight schrute has done quite well for himself :)
Cameron O'Brien indeed :3
Acting like the holy spirit took over them was genius
No offense, but Stubby Kaye was a lot better than this. He was a hard act to follow.
bic papermate I don't know. The guy in the Nathan Lane production was amazing
Yup. Stubby was amazing.
I just got cast as nicely nicely Johnson. I guess im a man now.
lol nice, short on guys, moreso dolls, yeah?
Great voices! Very slow, though.
liked the movie version of this song better
Not bad. Not too bad at all.
bruh i sang this at my school for a talent show and i won >:)
Does anyone else think it's just a tiny bit too slow?
Du hast mich 1000mal belogen
R Hendra
I will agree it was oddly paced. But he was still pretty good
Supoib!
It wasn't until just now that I realized this entire song is just one big lie.
Looool yup...better late than never.
I still prefer Walter Bobbie's version in 1992.
This would be flawless if the orchestra wasn't dragging.
Well, that ending was unnecessary.
They were robbed! Should have won best musical that year!

Stubby Kaye nailed it. This by comparison is weak in energy and pace.
Isn't the idea that this guy is a gangster? He has a nice voice but I've heard much better renditions
