  • This study, dated between 1483 and 1485, is in silverpoint on prepared paper. Theis a drawing of a young girl used as a model for the face of Angel Uriel in the painting Madonna of the rocks. The simplicity yet unity and variety this drawing conveys is unparalleled.
We learn in this video how line can be used for multiple purposes :
    1-Outlining
    2-Defining edges
    3-Shading

I am an artist living and working in France. I paint mainly imaginative realism. I’m mostly self-taught, I learned the techniques of the Academy of the Nineteenth century by myself and now I try to share some of my knowledge with the rest of the world, because I think that beauty still has an important role to play in artistic creation. On TH-cam, I do mostly drawing and oil painting techniques videos in the Atelier tradition, I share thoughts and explanations that can be useful to anyone, from beginners to more advanced artists interested in picking up realism and classical figuration.

Being an artist, this is without doubt absolutely my favorite by da Vinci. The distinct rendering of the eyes, the beautiful suggestion of the hair on the left side of face bring absolute life beyond precedent. All those who draw and paint be aware. The human heart cannot helped be moved by the elegance displayed in this most brilliant of drawings. In my humble opinion.

This drawing is absolutely heavenly. The master Leonardo da Vinci can express more feeling, more subtlety, and more life with fewer lines.
This should be a lesson to all of us that we shouldn't over render. If you can't put life into a drawing with fewer lines, more lines aren't the answer.

"lines following the direction of the light source" this always occured to me somehow but never could think of a way how to tell it. Now observing Da Vinci's study with your insights have enlightened me. Thanks for this and please keep it up!!!

Thank you Florent, for me and my opinion a good drawing says an awful lot about the artist and the subject matter. Drawing and the study of subject matter for me is the essence of a good painting. Drawing is everything.

I have a great admiration for the drawing, It's the fundamental back bone to great art. Drawings can be better than a painting, I'm not a fan of Watteau's paintings but find his drawings more compelling. There seems to be an immediacy element to drawing and the control and mastery of the line, the flow and relation of the line to the subject. Simply great beyond talent just total involvement in a quest for perfection.

Drawing is essential. You need a good skill of drawing to produce a good painting...at least for figurative painting.

Thanks for this excellent video. However, I have seen the Madonna of the Rocks in the National Gallery in London, and it is, to me, one of the greatest painting in the world. (I have seen the one in the Louvre as well.) This drawing is a magnificent drawing, but I would disagree that it is more successful than the full painting.

    Bonjour Florent,
