    This looks good. I pulled the chain and the bloody thing came right out of the housing unit. Initially looked like the chain just separated, but upon further inspection, the little chain 'catch' in the unit broke. Tiny little plastic piece. So got to replace the whole switch. Fun times.

    My ceiling fan was missing the chain on the speed select pull chain switch. I didn't necessarily needed to replace the whole pull switch. I without help, just opened up the pull chain switch itself and added a new chain. This was a tricky operation but got the pull chain switch working again!

    Thank you so much for this. Someone took apart a fan to replace the light paddle switch but never finished it. I was not sure how to wire the new switch in place because nothing was labeled and the wires in the fan are different colors than the wires in the ceiling. This was perfect in showing me how to replace the paddle switch. Thank you so very much!

    Very good information, however there is one thing that I never saw after watching several of these types of videos. I bought a 3 speed double capacitor fan switch at home depot. It went in real easy, and then when I turned on the fan it worked. However, the fan would not turn off, so I figured that it was faulty. Well when I got back to the store and was about to select the same switch, I notice that there was another switch of the same size but I noticed that it said single capacitor. I asked the guy who was in that department and he said more than likely, this would be the switch for your fan. Well he was right, and now it works like new. So be sure to know which capacitor your fan is set up for.

    I just wanted to say THANK you so much! We have been without a light in our bedroom for .. many months! the fan worked, and we resorted to closet lights and bathroom lights when it was necessary to add light to the room. We didn't want to pay someone to fix it, and knew we could, but, well I was intimidated. I watched a video way back then, when it broke, a different one, and it was thorough, but it kind of scared me. Yours was short, concise, to the point and exactly what I needed to feel more comfortable so I could try it. First thing I did was turn off the breaker, then unscrew everything so that I could see the switch (so I knew I would buy the right one). My fan had a blue wire and a black wire which threw me. I went to the hardware store, and the guy said that the blue and black meant they were both hot wires (they only had 2 black wire switches) he said it should work, so, I brought it home, positioned the switch the same as the old one tried to line up the wires just in case) turned on the power to test, and VOILA! to be honest, changing the switch for a newbie, it only took me about 5 minutes to get that done - it took longer to put the darn thing back together than it did to change the switch. for me - about 15 minutes or less total. This is long a long post, but I am just thrilled and had to say THANKS! I turned everything off and am waiting till my husband gets home so I can surprise him with the fix :) hurray!!

    My problem was slightly different. I have the 4 light fan and it has a separate area above the fan that has a night light in it. The unit is attached to a wall switch. If the switch is on, you could operate the fan and lights by pull strings (one for the fan, one for the lights.)
    By pulling the string you could turn the main lights on or off as well as the night light. Separately. So for years now, if the wall switch was on so were the main lights. The pull string did nothing. The night light quit working altogether. So I still figured it was a pull chain switch issue but having just done the change, it didn't affect it at all. I didn't have to run the wire up to the top- just use the wire nut to where both ends were attached in the main area below. At least they still work with the wall switch.

    I did it. There turned out to be a type of switch that has one of the black wires with a pull and push in plug. I didn't get that type and I acutally had cut that plug off on the ceiling fan to use the switch. Had I known, I could just have boughten the switch that had that type of plug. Oh well. It still worked and I did it.

    love the video, but still confused since the hardware store has a three way pull chain switch and a pull chain switch. I bought the single pull chain switch, but not sure if it is correct. My fan works fine on all three speeds, but my 2 lights are blinking like Christmas tree lights. both are operated from a single wall switch. Thanks, if you're still monitoring this.

    • @funbro1
      @funbro1  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      lulu Yep I'm still monitoring this :-) The hardware store will have several different types of switches available for fans, some are for the fan itself and some are for the light, your best bet is to take your old one in with you and match it up with a new one. Look for the number of wires coming out of the new one to match the old one, IF you can find someone in the store that knows anything about electric they should be able to assist you with a new switch. Hope this helps. Keep us posted.

    I accidentally pulled the chain out which turned the fan light from the "on position" to the "off position." Now my wall switch won't turn the light on. Is fixing this process still the same if I have no desire to replace the pull chain? I just want to be able to turn the light on/off using the wall switch again, I'd rather leave the pull chain absent to avoid it happening again. Thank you for your help.

    Thank you so much for this, just got it done but now Im getting a burning smell coming from the cables although everything seems fine. What could be the cause of such smell? Any help please?

    • @funbro1
      @funbro1  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure what you are smelling, it is possible that it is dust that was shaken loose when the new switch was wired in. Run it for a bit then turn off the electric and take it back apart, feel around for anything that might be warm/hot. Hope this helps, Thanks for watching.

    Good video. If you had cut the wires to the switch, close to the switch, you could have used wire nuts there without having to remove the upper housing. You way works, but removing two housings gets fiddly. I'm not criticizing your effort, just thinking out loud.

    If I turn off my light switch, will it kill the power from the ceiling fan or do I have to trip a breaker? Not trying to get electrocuted.

    • @funbro1
      @funbro1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would always recommend turning it off at the breaker. That being said many people do not but always be safe and check before doing any electrical work.

    My switch has gone bad a couple times, the hard part for me is finding a replacement switch because my threaded part of the switch needs to be about 3/4 of an inch long instead of a 1/2 inch those are hard to find even online. It can be done but it hasn't been easy lol.

      @@funbro1 Thanks for the video! its been a while since I've had to do this and I couldn't remember what I had done to it last time, you see my switch broke and I ordered one online a couple months ago. Since I had to wait for shipping I simply wired it so the light would be on whenever the wall switch was on . Which meant I couldn't turn off the light in the day if the fan was on. Wifey finally got after me today and I have it working properly again!

    I have replaced ceiling switches on my ceiling fan before, and I looked at the wiring, but this time the light fixture fell on the bed, and of course all that is left hanging from the fan is a blue, white and a black wire. I hooked up the blue wire to the black on the new switch, and the white to the white coming from the fan, what do I do with the black wire coming from the fan? The lights work, but not the fan? Help

    • @funbro1
      @funbro1  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It sounds like it needs to go to the motor the way you describe it?

    • @hestheMaster
      @hestheMaster 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      White to white . Then the blue ( fan)and black(light) get connected together
      and go to one side of the switch. The black from the fan goes to the other side of the switch(hot always). The switch will turn both on or off then.

    How do you change it if you broke the pull chain that controls the fan speed

    • @funbro1
      @funbro1  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You would follow the same process in this video but with the fan speed switch. That being said when you go to purchase the fan speed switch make sure you don’t get a light switch, they are different because most fan speed switches have more than one position. Hope this helps, Thanks for watching

    the switch I purchased had 2 Black wires. I took one of the wires and twisted it with the black wires and the other wire and twisted it with the white wires and it didnt work . I was wondering why the switch had 2 black wires instead of black and white.what am I doing wrong. The fan worked and the lighs were on but cant cut light off with chain

    • @funbro1
      @funbro1  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is possible that you might have purchased the wrong type of replacement switch. There are different types depending on the application. Check the switch that you took out and compare it to the new one...they should have the same amount/colors of wires.
