Then Jimi became the master of the Fender Stratocaster. History was being made and I was growing up listening to real music and at 66 years I'm still listening to Jimi,Duane, and Eric to this day.
In the third grade, in 66, I started taking guitar lessons. In 68 my Dad, a Doc Watson fan, bought me a Stratocastor. In 69, heard Jimi and 'Understood' right away what the purpose in the Universe was for the creation of the Stratocaster, and my musical world took off in a rock band through my high school years. I vividly remember the awe on the audiences' faces and my Dad's eyes lighting up when I unleashed Hendrix, peeling off his hard rock blues on my guitar, I even amazed myself at times. Thank you Jimi for showing me 'The Way' and those wonderful memories of a lifetime and You Tube for preserving his 'Art'.

Jimi is the equivalent to Jesus Christ on electric guitar playing. You have EVH who is like the 2nd coming of Christ, and then all the other impressive wankers are just his disciples...

The bending techniques in this version are absolutely amazing. So much feeling, it goes beyond playing ability, its like he transcends and becomes one with the guitar, generating pure emotion through the Amp. When Jimi was on, mannn was he ON!
72 here. Been listening to Jimi since I was 15yrs old. I swear he sounds better and better -if thats even possible. When I get to the next life or space...I wanna see, feel, hear, touch and experience Jimi Hendrix in that Universe ❤

@@MrCretemaniam I kind of understand it, he didnt seem to have a singers voice. It was just him singing his songs as he would but it worked. It was him, and it was personal, thats what I like about him. Not to mention I think he was right when he said he could better express himself with the guitar than his voice.

@@curbozer5006 not all the old bluesman. One of jimis heros who he copied some of his style, buddy guy, eventually learned of jimi and liked him so much that he started copying jimis style in return. Crazy it was almost like buddy was chillin one day and realised some kid took his classic style and just evolved it to a whole new level and then when jimi died buddy would sortve tribute his style. Remember folks buddy wanted to do all the distortion and loud noise and rarely got his way, cause they thought people didnt wanna hear all that. Same thing the american producers were telling jimi, they dont wanna hear all that, but then the british loved it and once it blew up then those same american producers realised their mistake and started giving more distortion and fuzz a chance. So buddy was always down with the madness aspect of it but he plays a bit different than normal when he tributes jimi but not too much cause jimis style is just an evolution of his with others along the way

Just hearing this version for the first time. I'm 54 years old and got absolutely hooked on Hendrix when I was 13. This confirms the addiction. If you don't understand Jimi then you just missed the whole boat. I'm a guitar player myself, and the bends small and large, are incredible, simply incredible, pure Hendrix. Cannot get enough of his music it's impossible

Saw Jimi in June, 1968 at the OU Fieldhouse. Gobsmacking fabulous! Was not an OU student, came down from OSU to see him. Phenomenal musician, no other guitar player like him.
This is amazing having this rare recording of Jimi Hendrix playing Red House at the Filmore East. I have always loved listening to Hendrix, never get tired of him 😉
May 10, 1968...Sly and the Family Stone actually opened for Hendrix...and they really rocked the joint!..So Jimi just decided to take it to another level.....This version is a little bit more "raw" than his version from the San Diego Sports Arena, in 1969....IMO, this Fillmore East 68 version is the 2nd best one he ever did...but he did so many versions, and never played that tune quite the same way!...A real genius--so rare in the field of Rock...I was blessed, to see him twice...I saw many other so-called Rock Gods in the 1970s--no one compared to Jimi Hendrix...he was just so far ahead of his peers that it was not fair to them!

Whenever someone tells me guitarist "xyz" is the best, I direct them to Jimi playing 1 of a 100 versions of Red House, and how each is unique, flawless and filled with emotion. If they don't change their opinion after listening, they're beyond help and will never get it! Jimi played with such emotion; if he only played the triangle, he'd be the best there ever was.
you can read all methods of guitar, travel several times around the earth if you want, but you will not find these ideas of this genius of Jimi .. I never got addicted to anything except to .. abuse solos Jimi ..

Hi Debora, love your story about Jimi. I remember when I first saw Jimi on TV. It was December 1966, I was 7 yrs old, I'm from the UK. There was a music programme call " Ready Steady Go" the programme use to come Friday nights. I saw all the usual bands & singers perform, then Jimi came on, looking so cool & hip, he dressed different from everyone else. He sang " Hey Joe". What I'll never forget was when Jimi played his solo, he played part of the solo with his teeth, imagine me, a 7 year old boy, never seen nothing like that. I ran to the kitchen to call my mum, I told her that there is a Black man on TV playing the guitar with his teeth. That was my first sighting of Jimi, and I'll never forget, I've been a big Jimi fan since then. Jimi was just different from everyone else, that's what I liked about Jimi.
Why does everyone say this same thing. There were great recordings made off the board then for official live LPs. The rest were lower quality because they were fans or bootleggers recording from the audience. If anything IT WAS THE PA SYSTEMS and the equipment like the mics and amps that could not handle turning it up to 11 like Jimi did.
There will never be a Jimi Hendrix again and I swear by God 🙏 when he made Jimi,. He went out of his way, and that's why you will never see a great guitarist as Jimi was.
Jimi was the night sky that youd come too after a long ass day from work. He was the noise and whisper of the universe. The rolling stone that rolled and for some odd reason made you roll ten times over and over till you felt dazed and confused but the best moments were when he would give you a new moment over and over. Passing out on Hendrix and dying of blues is the best feeling for some but not for all

The best performance of Red House ive ever heard from Jimi. I think it was revolutionary, cuz those rifs made the path for uncoming songs and bands that tracends the ages of rock. My ovations.

Red House version from In The West is still the gold standard for myself. This is rare because it is very laid back and mostly relaxed throughout until the final chorus.

My Dad never had a Hendrix Tune in the house? I found him on greatest hits album my cousin had at the cottage/Camp.I have been in love ever since. My Mother bought Electric Ladyland for me in 1980. My Dad loved all music.
So true; jimi did'nt even know how to read music and did'nt bother or need to learn! His music was true, pure and authentically produced and expressed from within and he did'nt need the confines of learning how to play cords by learning to read notes, which makes jimi's work that more special. They say, that jimi, could never play one of his tracks the same each time over; that is he played and improvised in the moment, depending on how he felt, his mood and of coarse his altered state of consciousness. That's why if you listen to the difference between jimi's recorded studio performances and live performances, you can, although the track is and sounds recognisable and identifiable to his original artistic creation of say one of his main recognised and most popular tracks, you can hear the suttle differences and transformations within each performance. This being, that jimi, was the majority of time whilst performing live, he did so under the influence of phecadelics, which gave him not only the ability to transcend within himself through his music, it gave his viewers and audience a unique opportunity to experience this with him, through their own interpretation of his music; which tuned them in to a transdenial reality that exists outside our grasp of understanding, but does'nt stop us from entering this realm through not only natural mind altering compounds used by shamanistic cultures since and before the dawn and evolution of man, but also through the experience of heightened states of love and only through the human orgasmic physicality of a loved one's partnership that one is able to reach this transdenial experience among other means. What i mean by this is; Sometimes when you watch jimi live in concert, it's like your watching something private, a glimpse into the inmate relationship between himself and his guitar and his guitar is an extension of his whole being, sexual expression, artistic artistry and an expression of his relationship with the universe itself. He was born to play the guitar and influence music for generations to come. I've only ever felt this to be the case with jimi, and i dont know wether anyone else has felt or interpreted this way, but jimi was indeed an enigma yet to be topped! The only artist i personally feel was able to come close to express himself this way and elaborate and add on to some of jimi's most popular tracks, especially little wing, was stevie ray Vaughan.
@@johnbyrne8358 That was nice, but, Jimi actually played duet with his amp, with the drummer trying to keep the beat, and the base providing a foundation. You had to hear one of his 4 track private audition tapes to really know how really bad he played without his band.

Jimi, didnt want to keep his tracks tight , he really liked to jam mainly in the recording studio and let off, but his management recognised that it was not commercially viable, He was to ahead of his time, the man even predicted his own death;he knew more than we gave him credit So anyway therefore, jimi's talents and the band's were stifled Moreover, jimi got fleeced by his management and as long as they kept him supplyed with weed and acid, he carried on playing because that was his true addiction. Although i like such a wide range of olde sckool music, for my age, jimi is up there with some of my other favourite musicians, if not my favourite! Jimi, influenced so many musicians and still does to this day but the beautiful thing about jimi, was he was such a genuine down to earth person; very introverted and humble in his fame. There has never been anyone like him and never will be obliviously!However, if you like jimi's music, check out Stevie Ray Vaughan's version of 'little wing' and voodoo child, they referred to him once as the 'white' Jimi Hendrix, which is ridiculous! Not out of key. The Great Master that he was actually tuned to 432hz standard which is Natural tuning and todays standard concert pitch is 440hz. The Beatles also used 432hz tuning as well.
this is some Jimi's best ever blues playing . but the one on Hendrix in the West is no.1 for me. it's fire and brimstone!! this is at times kind of laid back and Jimi is content at times here to play rhythm (sort of around the drum solo),which is rare for him when jamming, but it all sounds great. thanx to solutionneverpuzzle for this gem.
Just when you think which notes Jimi is gonna hit next in his guitar solos, he plays those exact notes what we anticipate, but only in the best possible way every time .
Jimi reconfigures cliche's--updates the language in doing so...melds the major and minor pentatonics like nobody else...but what really sperates him though is the durational scope to his lines...they have an elastic lyrical fluidity...Jimi really, ironically is kind of underrated as a guitarist in my opinion....

"in other words delaying the completion of the beat" That implies the way he is feeling the pocket, not the duration. Did you mean the completion of the bar, or cycle maybe? what I am talking about is phrasing over a four to 8 bar duration instead of a two bar call and response which is typical in the blues idiom. It is to feel the line horizontally as opposed to vertically in terms of written music---Indian classical musicians can extend that to 32 bars and beyond, and then they can drop in on the "1" of a new time cycle and always know where they are at.
***** yah--well Mike Bloomfield said it best one time, that Jimi was the foremost master of the rhythm and blues guitar---Jimi's playing was perfect, magical, transcendent, innovative, searching, innocent, explorative---all the beautiful qualities you can have in a creative artist... This version is a gem. can't believe I never heard it. His phrasing is unreal, he always finds a new way to turn the phrase around, its interesting that this aspect of his playing has not really been addressed.
Actually...this tune, and his entire concert that evening, has been circulating as a bootleg, for many years...That evening, he wore a special vest, made from peacock feathers...he only wore it once, for whatever reason...so whenever you see him wearing it, the photo will be from this gig.
I feel like he could have made some great funk/prog influenced music throughout the 70s. probably collaborating with big musicians in a supergroup at some point. A transition from the wild psychedelic rock into someone more organized. The direction he was sort of heading into before he died
One of my first encounters with Jimi was when I was 17 and noticed Electric Ladyland vinyl on the list of albums in the local public library. Didn't even have a record player home, so I listened EL in the library with huuuge ear goggles (70s, right :). It was a ride, starting with "... And the Gods Made Love". Thought there was something wrong with the rec. player ;-D. Went home totally uplifted ... and baffled. "That's not how you play the guitar" :) That took place 45 years ago. Been a devoted fan ever since!
I like how this song progressed through his short career, in a way that is really difficult to comprehend musically... he hit it out of the park at the Isle of Wight Festival

I do like all the versions I've heard, and that's quiet a few, but the Hendrix in the West version is not only the best version of Red House to me, it's my favorite blues song by anyone, and I like a lot of different blues artists. Just my opinion, not trying to upset or get into it with anyone. Lol.

There is a human "alive" vibe to his playing that just can't be described. And I don't know where it can be heard anywhere else today. Practicing for perfection is not where it's at.
Jimi played Red House on a three-pickup Gibson SG Custom the third time I saw him in Detroit. Guess he liked the Gibson sound for the blues. He said he'd come back "when I'm more better rested up". He never returned and sadly he is still missed today.
I was hoping someone would chime in on the Gibson SG Custom he was playing towards the later part of his career. He really made that guitar sing... I guess he (like many others) realized the SG was a step up in design and comfort compared to the primitive strat and les paul. Who knows what kinds of great music we are missing due to his early death. Unfortunate to say the very least.

I vividly remember the awe on the audiences' faces and my Dad's eyes lighting up when I unleashed Hendrix, peeling off his hard rock blues on my guitar, I even amazed myself at times. Thank you Jimi for showing me 'The Way' and those wonderful memories of a lifetime and You Tube for preserving his 'Art'.

Crazy it was almost like buddy was chillin one day and realised some kid took his classic style and just evolved it to a whole new level and then when jimi died buddy would sortve tribute his style.
Remember folks buddy wanted to do all the distortion and loud noise and rarely got his way, cause they thought people didnt wanna hear all that. Same thing the american producers were telling jimi, they dont wanna hear all that, but then the british loved it and once it blew up then those same american producers realised their mistake and started giving more distortion and fuzz a chance. So buddy was always down with the madness aspect of it but he plays a bit different than normal when he tributes jimi but not too much cause jimis style is just an evolution of his with others along the way

Just hearing this version for the first time. I'm 54 years old and got absolutely hooked on Hendrix when I was 13. This confirms the addiction. If you don't understand Jimi then you just missed the whole boat. I'm a guitar player myself, and the bends small and large, are incredible, simply incredible, pure Hendrix. Cannot get enough of his music it's impossible
Plumber man, I got hooked about the same time as you and I'm to be 66 soon. I always, repeat, always need doses small and large of Jimi from time to time, more times than not often.
His hands were so large, with elongated fingers...that alone had to help him reach those extreme chords and notes!
That was epic... saw Jimi in his return to Seattle ~ 49 years ago. Today he is still the master.

Saw Jimi in June, 1968 at the OU Fieldhouse. Gobsmacking fabulous! Was not an OU student, came down from OSU to see him. Phenomenal musician, no other guitar player like him.

May 10, 1968...Sly and the Family Stone actually opened for Hendrix...and they really rocked the joint!..So Jimi just decided to take it to another level.....This version is a little bit more "raw" than his version from the San Diego Sports Arena, in 1969....IMO, this Fillmore East 68 version is the 2nd best one he ever did...but he did so many versions, and never played that tune quite the same way!...A real genius--so rare in the field of Rock...I was blessed, to see him twice...I saw many other so-called Rock Gods in the 1970s--no one compared to Jimi Hendrix...he was just so far ahead of his peers that it was not fair to them!

Whenever someone tells me guitarist "xyz" is the best, I direct them to Jimi playing 1 of a 100 versions of Red House, and how each is unique, flawless and filled with emotion. If they don't change their opinion after listening, they're beyond help and will never get it! Jimi played with such emotion; if he only played the triangle, he'd be the best there ever was.
you can read all methods of guitar, travel several times around the earth if you want, but you will not find these ideas of this genius of Jimi .. I never got addicted to anything except to .. abuse solos Jimi ..

Hi Debora, love your story about Jimi. I remember when I first saw Jimi on TV. It was December 1966, I was 7 yrs old, I'm from the UK. There was a music programme call " Ready Steady Go" the programme use to come Friday nights. I saw all the usual bands & singers perform, then Jimi came on, looking so cool & hip, he dressed different from everyone else. He sang " Hey Joe". What I'll never forget was when Jimi played his solo, he played part of the solo with his teeth, imagine me, a 7 year old boy, never seen nothing like that. I ran to the kitchen to call my mum, I told her that there is a Black man on TV playing the guitar with his teeth. That was my first sighting of Jimi, and I'll never forget, I've been a big Jimi fan since then. Jimi was just different from everyone else, that's what I liked about Jimi.

Why does everyone say this same thing. There were great recordings made off the board then for official live LPs. The rest were lower quality because they were fans or bootleggers recording from the audience. If anything IT WAS THE PA SYSTEMS and the equipment like the mics and amps that could not handle turning it up to 11 like Jimi did.

Red House version from In The West is still the gold standard for myself. This is rare because it is very laid back and mostly relaxed throughout until the final chorus.

His music was true, pure and authentically produced and expressed from within and he did'nt need the confines of learning how to play cords by learning to read notes, which makes jimi's work that more special.
They say, that jimi, could never play one of his tracks the same each time over; that is he played and improvised in the moment, depending on how he felt, his mood and of coarse his altered state of consciousness.
That's why if you listen to the difference between jimi's recorded studio performances and live performances, you can, although the track is and sounds recognisable and identifiable to his original artistic creation of say one of his main recognised and most popular tracks, you can hear the suttle differences and transformations within each performance.
This being, that jimi, was the majority of time whilst performing live, he did so under the influence of phecadelics, which gave him not only the ability to transcend within himself through his music, it gave his viewers and audience a unique opportunity to experience this with him, through their own interpretation of his music; which tuned them in to a transdenial reality that exists outside our grasp of understanding, but does'nt stop us from entering this realm through not only natural mind altering compounds used by shamanistic cultures since and before the dawn and evolution of man, but also through the experience of heightened states of love and only through the human orgasmic physicality of a loved one's partnership that one is able to reach this transdenial experience among other means.
What i mean by this is; Sometimes when you watch jimi live in concert, it's like your watching something private, a glimpse into the inmate relationship between himself and his guitar and his guitar is an extension of his whole being, sexual expression, artistic artistry and an expression of his relationship with the universe itself.
He was born to play the guitar and influence music for generations to come.
I've only ever felt this to be the case with jimi, and i dont know wether anyone else has felt or interpreted this way, but jimi was indeed an enigma yet to be topped!
The only artist i personally feel was able to come close to express himself this way and elaborate and add on to some of jimi's most popular tracks, especially little wing, was stevie ray Vaughan.

So anyway therefore, jimi's talents and the band's were stifled
Moreover, jimi got fleeced by his management and as long as they kept him supplyed with weed and acid, he carried on playing because that was his true addiction.

There has never been anyone like him and never will be obliviously!However, if you like jimi's music, check out Stevie Ray Vaughan's version of 'little wing' and voodoo child, they referred to him once as the 'white' Jimi Hendrix, which is ridiculous! The instrustry and powers that be still trying to pust and reinforce racial boundaries on us!

Not out of key. The Great Master that he was actually tuned to 432hz standard which is Natural tuning and todays standard concert pitch is 440hz. The Beatles also used 432hz tuning as well.

this is some Jimi's best ever blues playing . but the one on Hendrix in the West is no.1 for me. it's fire and brimstone!! this is at times kind of laid back and Jimi is content at times here to play rhythm (sort of around the drum solo),which is rare for him when jamming, but it all sounds great. thanx to solutionneverpuzzle for this gem.

Jimi reconfigures cliche's--updates the language in doing so...melds the major and minor pentatonics like nobody else...but what really sperates him though is the durational scope to his lines...they have an elastic lyrical fluidity...Jimi really, ironically is kind of underrated as a guitarist in my opinion....

It is to feel the line horizontally as opposed to vertically in terms of written music---Indian classical musicians can extend that to 32 bars and beyond, and then they can drop in on the "1" of a new time cycle and always know where they are at.
***** yah--well Mike Bloomfield said it best one time, that Jimi was the foremost master of the rhythm and blues guitar---Jimi's playing was perfect, magical, transcendent, innovative, searching, innocent, explorative---all the beautiful qualities you can have in a creative artist... This version is a gem. can't believe I never heard it. His phrasing is unreal, he always finds a new way to turn the phrase around, its interesting that this aspect of his playing has not really been addressed.
Actually...this tune, and his entire concert that evening, has been circulating as a bootleg, for many years...That evening, he wore a special vest, made from peacock feathers...he only wore it once, for whatever reason...so whenever you see him wearing it, the photo will be from this gig.
I've listened to dozens of versions - never have I heard him play or sound like this!

I feel like he could have made some great funk/prog influenced music throughout the 70s. probably collaborating with big musicians in a supergroup at some point. A transition from the wild psychedelic rock into someone more organized. The direction he was sort of heading into before he died
One of my first encounters with Jimi was when I was 17 and noticed Electric Ladyland vinyl on the list of albums in the local public library. Didn't even have a record player home, so I listened EL in the library with huuuge ear goggles (70s, right :). It was a ride, starting with "... And the Gods Made Love". Thought there was something wrong with the rec. player ;-D. Went home totally uplifted ... and baffled. "That's not how you play the guitar" :) That took place 45 years ago. Been a devoted fan ever since!
I like how this song progressed through his short career, in a way that is really difficult to comprehend musically... he hit it out of the park at the Isle of Wight Festival

I do like all the versions I've heard, and that's quiet a few, but the Hendrix in the West version is not only the best version of Red House to me, it's my favorite blues song by anyone, and I like a lot of different blues artists. Just my opinion, not trying to upset or get into it with anyone. Lol.

There is a human "alive" vibe to his playing that just can't be described. And I don't know where it can be heard anywhere else today. Practicing for perfection is not where it's at.

Jimi played Red House on a three-pickup Gibson SG Custom the third time I saw him in Detroit. Guess he liked the Gibson sound for the blues. He said he'd come back "when I'm more better rested up". He never returned and sadly he is still missed today.
I was hoping someone would chime in on the Gibson SG Custom he was playing towards the later part of his career. He really made that guitar sing... I guess he (like many others) realized the SG was a step up in design and comfort compared to the primitive strat and les paul.
Who knows what kinds of great music we are missing due to his early death. Unfortunate to say the very least.
